RV camping near Waynesboro, Georgia
Waynesboro sits in Burke County in east-central Georgia, roughly a 40-minute drive south of Augusta and within reach of the Ogeechee River corridor. The town is known as the Bird Dog Capital of the World and serves as a practical base for RV travelers exploring the region's state parks, fishing areas, and small-town Southern culture.
Camping options near the city range from full-hookup private parks in and around town to a nearby state park with a wooded campground. Made In the Shade Campground and RV Park, Plantation Oaks RV Park, Carolina Hill Mobile Home and RV Park, and Ponderosa RV Park Inc. cover most private-park needs, while Magnolia Springs State Park, located between Perkins and Millen to the south, offers the closest public campground with natural attractions.
Many travelers pair one or two nights near town with day trips to Augusta for dining, sports, and the Savannah River waterfront, or a longer stay at Magnolia Springs for hiking, fishing, and spring-fed swimming.
Things to do near Waynesboro
Magnolia Springs State Park is the standout outdoor draw in the area. The park is built around crystal-clear springs that flow roughly seven million gallons per day, with a boardwalk over the spring run for spotting alligators, turtles, and other wildlife, plus a 28-acre lake for fishing and small-boat use with a 10 hp motor limit.
In Waynesboro itself, visitors can walk the Greenway Trail connecting downtown to nearby parks, tour the Burke County Museum for local history, and stop at the Bird Dog Statue that marks the town's hunting-dog heritage. Anglers head to nearby public fishing areas for bass, catfish, and bream, and Augusta is roughly 40 minutes north for shopping, restaurants, minor-league baseball at SRP Park, and the Augusta Canal.

Spring and fall are the most comfortable windows for RV travel in this part of Georgia. From March through May, daytime highs climb from the mid 60s into the low 80s Fahrenheit with wildflowers, active wildlife around the springs, and manageable humidity. Autumn, roughly late September through November, brings drier air, cooler nights, and the region's most reliable stretch of pleasant camping weather.
Summer is hot and humid, with afternoon thunderstorms common from June through August and heat indices frequently above 95 F. Shaded sites, electric hookups for air conditioning, and swimming access matter more in this window. Peak weekends at Magnolia Springs State Park fill quickly, so book several weeks ahead.
Winter stays are mild by U.S. standards, with daytime highs typically in the upper 50s and freezes rare. Magnolia Springs operates year-round, and most private parks around Waynesboro stay open, making the area a viable off-season destination for snowbirds routing between Florida and the Carolinas.
How to book campgrounds near Waynesboro
Magnolia Springs State Park takes reservations through the Georgia State Parks system on ReserveAmerica, or by phone at 1-800-864-7275. A daily ParkPass is required for all vehicles, and overnight guests pay the ParkPass fee only once per stay. Check-in runs from 4 p.m. to 10 p.m. with checkout at 11 a.m., and the entrance gate locks at 10 p.m., so late arrivals should contact the park office in advance at 478-982-1660.
Private parks such as Made In the Shade Campground and RV Park, Plantation Oaks RV Park, Carolina Hill Mobile Home and RV Park, and Ponderosa RV Park Inc. handle bookings directly by phone or through their own websites. For holiday weekends, Masters week in Augusta each April, and the fall event season, reserve as far ahead as possible.
What to expect on the ground
The landscape around Waynesboro is flat to gently rolling pine forest and farmland, with sandy soils and easy road access to most campgrounds. Sites at Magnolia Springs State Park generally accommodate RVs, though some are curved back-ins rather than straight pull-throughs, so long rigs should ask about site dimensions when booking.
Expect biting insects from late spring through early fall, including mosquitoes near the springs and lake, plus ticks and chiggers in wooded areas. Pack repellent and check for ticks after hikes. Alligators live in the spring run at Magnolia Springs, so keep children and pets on the boardwalk and away from the water's edge.
Cell coverage is generally reliable near Waynesboro and along U.S. 25, but can be spotty inside the state park. Groceries, fuel, and propane are easiest to source in town before heading out to more rural sites.
