Campgrounds near West Point, Georgia
West Point sits at the southern end of West Point Lake on the Chattahoochee River, straddling the Georgia and Alabama state line. The reservoir is on the western shore of West Point Lake, which spans parts of Alabama and Georgia, and has 525 miles of shoreline, with a surface area of roughly 25,900 acres. The lake is maintained by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, with additional Georgia Power sites on the connected Lake Harding reservoir just downstream.
RV travelers have several practical options within a short drive of town. 3 Creeks Campground and Lakeside RV Park serve as smaller bases close to the lake, while Highland Marina Resort on the LaGrange side combines RV sites with a marina. Blanton Creek Park Georgia Power sits south near Hamilton on Lake Harding, and Pine Mountain RV Resort is positioned near Callaway Gardens for travelers using West Point as a launching point for the broader Pine Mountain area. West Point Lake itself offers 17 campgrounds with various amenities and settings, most operated by the Corps of Engineers and reservable through Recreation.gov.
Things to do near West Point
Fishing is the most popular activity on West Point Lake; a dozen creeks and more than 40 square miles of water hold bass, catfish, crappie, and bream. Boat ramps and day-use parks ring the lake, and Highland Marina Resort rents boats and provides lake access for guests. The West Point Lake Visitor Center near the dam is a useful first stop for maps and information on camping, picnicking, hiking, and boating, and osprey and bald eagles are frequently spotted in the area. South of town, Callaway Gardens and F.D. Roosevelt State Park add hiking trails, gardens, and seasonal events. Hamilton serves as a gateway to Callaway Gardens and F.D. Roosevelt State Park, both a short drive away, making Blanton Creek Park a useful base for exploring Meriwether and Harris counties.

The camping season for many facilities on West Point Lake runs from spring through mid-fall, though some Corps loops and nearby state parks remain open year-round. Spring brings mild temperatures, blooming dogwoods and azaleas, and steady bass fishing. Summer is the busiest stretch on the lake, with hot, humid days, frequent afternoon thunderstorms, and heavy weekend boat traffic. Waterfront sites should be reserved well in advance, especially during summer weekends when the lake fills with boaters and swimmers.
Fall typically delivers the most comfortable RV weather: lower humidity, cooler nights, and good foliage in the surrounding hardwoods. Blanton Creek Park Georgia Power operates from March 1 to October 31, so late-season trips after early November should target year-round Corps sites or private parks. Georgia Power periodically conducts lake drawdowns on Lake Harding where Blanton Creek Campground is located, which can affect boat-ramp depth and shoreline use, so check water levels before booking a waterfront site in late fall.

How to book campsites near West Point
West Point Lake is managed by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and offers 17 campgrounds, with reservations handled through Recreation.gov. Corps sites typically open on a six-month rolling window, and waterfront pads at the most popular loops fill quickly for summer weekends and holidays. Booking several weeks ahead is advisable for any Friday or Saturday arrival between Memorial Day and Labor Day.
Blanton Creek Park Georgia Power uses a separate reservation system through the Georgia Power lakes site, not Recreation.gov. A two-week maximum stay applies, alcohol is not permitted in the park, and pets must be on a leash of six feet or shorter. Private parks such as Highland Marina Resort, Pine Mountain RV Resort, 3 Creeks Campground, and Lakeside RV Park are booked directly through each property and generally allow longer stays.
What to expect on the ground
Surrounded by rolling fields and deep forests that display outstanding fall foliage, the area sits along the Chattahoochee River on the Alabama-Georgia state line, with forested shorelines overlooking the lake. Corps campgrounds generally provide water and electric hookups, with many sites positioned near the shoreline. Full sewer hookups are less common at Corps loops; plan on using a dump station on the way out. Blanton Creek accommodates RVs up to 60 feet with full hookups, also offers tent sites and boat-in camping, and features large gravel sites with concrete picnic tables and fire rings, most shaded by mature trees.
Cell coverage is generally reliable near LaGrange and West Point but can fade at the more remote Corps loops. Bring insect repellent in summer, and expect occasional deer and wild turkey sightings around dawn and dusk.

Frequently asked questions about campgrounds near West Point, GA
How much does it cost to rent an RV in West Point, GA?
RV rental in West Point, GA is affordable, especially compared to flying into Atlanta and booking a hotel near West Point Lake. On RVezy you'll typically find travel trailers starting around $90 to $150 per night, Class C motorhomes between $175 and $275 per night, and larger Class A rigs from about $250 to $400 per night. Because hosts set their own pricing, mileage policies, and add-ons, you can filter for cheap RV rental West Point options and message hosts directly about multi-night discounts. Tip: booking Sunday through Thursday at R. Shaefer Heard or Holiday Campground can often reduce your total trip cost compared with a Friday-Saturday lakeside stay.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=West%20Point%2C%20GeorgiaWhat license do I need to rent an RV in West Point, Georgia?
Good news: a regular driver's license is all you need to rent an RV in West Point, Georgia. The Georgia Department of Driver Services does not require a special endorsement or commercial license for personal motorhomes, travel trailers, or fifth wheels under standard weight limits, so your everyday Class C license works perfectly. To book on RVezy you'll need to be 25 or older, and ID verification is done right through the platform during checkout. Visiting from outside the US? Bring your home country license plus an International Driving Permit (usually under $20 from your local auto club) and you're ready to roll toward West Point Lake.
dds.georgia.gov/licenses/getting-license-id-cardIs rental protection included with my West Point RV booking?
Yes. Every RV rental in West Point, GA booked through RVezy includes a renter protection plan plus 24/7 roadside assistance. The protection plan covers eligible damage to the RV and gives you peace of mind whether you're parked lakeside at Whitetail Ridge or driving across the Chattahoochee River into Alabama. During checkout you choose the protection level that fits your trip, so you can increase coverage for a longer family RV trip in West Point or keep it lean for a quick weekend. You can review what's included on the RVezy insurance and protection page before you book.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailWhat if I need to cancel my West Point RV trip?
You can plan your West Point RV trip with confidence. RVezy sets the cancellation policy across the platform (it isn't host-defined), and it includes a grace period right after booking so you aren't locked in the moment you reserve. If severe weather such as a tornado watch or tropical storm remnants affects the Chattahoochee Valley, RVezy's customer support team will work with you on options. The simplest approach: book early and contact RVezy support right away if your plans change so they can help you with the next step.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360037736674-Understanding-the-cancellation-policy-for-guestsCan I bring my dog on a West Point RV rental?
Absolutely, pet-friendly RV rental West Point options are easy to find on RVezy. Just toggle the Pet-Friendly filter on the search page and you'll see motorhomes and travel trailers whose owners welcome dogs (some welcome cats too). Once you arrive, West Point Lake is a dream for dog owners: leashed pups are welcome at R. Shaefer Heard Campground, Whitetail Ridge, and along the 6.4-mile paved Lakeside Trail on the lake's south shore near LaGrange. Pro tip: pack a towel for muddy red-clay paws after a swim, and ask your host about a pet cleaning fee upfront so checkout is smooth and stress-free.
sam.usace.army.mil/Missions/Recreation/West-Point-Lake/Can the RV be delivered to my campsite in West Point?
Yes. RV delivery in West Point is one of the most popular options on RVezy, especially for first-timers. Many local hosts will tow or drive the RV directly to your site at R. Shaefer Heard Campground, Holiday Campground, or Pyne Road Park, level it, hook up water and power, and walk you through every system before handing over the keys. Delivery fees are set by each host and commonly run a few dollars per mile round-trip from the host's location. To arrange it, filter by Delivery on the search page or message the host from the listing to confirm your campground address. It's the easiest way to skip the towing stress entirely.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=West%20Point%2C%20GeorgiaHow far can I drive on a West Point RV rental, and is unlimited mileage available?
Plenty of West Point hosts offer generous mileage packages, and yes, RV rental with unlimited mileage is available on RVezy if you filter for it. Most hosts include 100 to 150 free miles per day, which is more than enough for a typical lake-and-back weekend. To put that in perspective from West Point: Callaway Gardens in Pine Mountain is about 30 miles, Atlanta is 80 miles north on I-85, Auburn, Alabama is 30 miles west, Columbus is 50 miles south, and the Great Smoky Mountains are roughly 220 miles. If you're planning a bigger RV road trip from West Point, message the host before booking to lock in unlimited miles.
dot.ga.gov/Where are the best campgrounds near West Point, GA for an RV?
You're spoiled for choice when it comes to RV camping West Point. The top picks all sit on the 525 miles of West Point Lake shoreline: R. Shaefer Heard Campground (117 waterfront sites with 30/50-amp service, open year-round, just 4 miles from downtown West Point), Whitetail Ridge Campground (58 lakeside sites with water and electric, on the lake's western shore), Holiday Campground (150+ sites on a forested peninsula near LaGrange), Amity Campground in Alabama (90+ sites with paved pads), and Pyne Road Park (37 sites with great fishing access). All five are Corps of Engineers parks with dump stations, hot showers, and boat ramps right on site.
sam.usace.army.mil/Missions/Recreation/West-Point-Lake/Campgrounds/R-Shaefer-Heard/When is the best time of year to take an RV trip from West Point, GA?
West Point's mild climate means you can RV here roughly 10 months a year, with spring and fall being the absolute sweet spot. April through early June brings 70-85°F days, blooming dogwoods, and excellent bass fishing on West Point Lake. September through early November delivers 65-80°F days, lower humidity, and brilliant fall foliage on the forested peninsulas. July and August are hot (90-95°F with high humidity) but perfect for swimming and paddleboarding straight from your campsite. Winter daytime highs hover in the 50s with rare freezes, so even December and February work for a quiet, off-peak lake getaway. Local insider tip: avoid Memorial Day weekend if you want a quiet shoreline site.
weather.gov/ffc/climateI've never rented an RV before. Is West Point a good place to start?
West Point is honestly one of the easiest places in Georgia to be a first time renting an RV. Traffic is light, I-85 is wide and well-marked, and your host will give you a full orientation at pickup, walking you through the generator, slide-outs, water and sewer hookups, and dashboard controls before you ever turn the key. Many West Point hosts also offer delivery, so your very first RV experience can start with the rig already set up at R. Shaefer Heard with the awning out and the fridge cold. You can also message the host any time during your trip, plus RVezy's 24/7 support is one tap away in the app.
gohsep.ga.gov/What happens if I break down during my West Point RV trip?
You're covered. Every RV rental in West Point, GA booked on RVezy includes 24/7 roadside assistance as part of the renter protection plan, so a flat tire on US-29, a dead battery at Whitetail Ridge, or a tow off I-85 is one phone call away. Your host is also a direct resource for quirks specific to that RV, such as where the spare key for a storage bay is or how to reset the inverter, and RVezy's support team can step in whenever needed. Tip: snap a quick photo of the RV's VIN and license plate at pickup so you have the info ready if you ever call in roadside help.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailCan I take my West Point RV rental across state lines or into Alabama?
Yes, and you'll want to, because Alabama is right across the river. West Point sits on the Georgia-Alabama border, so a short drive puts you in Lanett or Valley, AL, and Auburn is about 30 miles west. Cross-state US travel is allowed on most RVezy bookings, including longer trips up to Tennessee or down to the Florida panhandle. Travel into Mexico is not permitted because insurance coverage does not extend there. Heading to Canada? Message the host first to confirm. Popular routes from West Point include the Blue Ridge Parkway and the 30A beaches along the Gulf.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039340074-Insurance-coverage-validityWhat should I budget for fuel on a West Point RV road trip?
Fuel is usually the second biggest line item after the rental itself, but it's predictable. Class B campervans get 18-22 MPG, Class C motorhomes average 8-12 MPG, Class A rigs run 6-9 MPG, and a tow vehicle pulling a travel trailer typically lands around 9-13 MPG. Georgia gas prices generally sit a bit below the national average, and the Pilot, Love's, and RaceTrac stations along I-85 at Exits 2 and 6 in West Point have easy big-rig access and diesel pumps. Pro tip: fill up in Georgia before crossing into Alabama, where prices on this stretch of US-29 tend to run a few cents higher per gallon.
eia.gov/petroleum/gasdiesel/How far in advance should I book a campsite around West Point Lake?
For peak weekends (Memorial Day, July 4th, Labor Day), book your West Point Lake campsite 4 to 6 months ahead, because Corps of Engineers parks like R. Shaefer Heard, Whitetail Ridge, Holiday, and Amity all fill fast. Reservations for these federal campgrounds are made through Recreation.gov, which opens bookings up to 6 months in advance to the day. For mid-week trips or shoulder season (March, April, October), you can often grab a great waterfront site just 2-3 weeks out. Local insider tip: if everything looks full, set up a Recreation.gov campsite alert because last-minute cancellations are surprisingly common in the week before a holiday weekend.
recreation.gov/camping/gateways/2691What are the driving conditions like around West Point, GA?
West Point is one of the friendlier RV driving towns in Georgia. I-85 runs right through it with wide shoulders and easy on/off ramps at Exit 2 (US-29) and Exit 6 (GA-18), and most lake-access roads like Shaefer Heard Park Road and Abbottsford Road are paved and RV-rated. Watch for two things: late-afternoon thunderstorms in summer that can bring quick downpours, and the occasional CSX freight train crossing in downtown West Point near the historic depot, which can briefly back up traffic. Hills are gentle (you're at 600-700 ft elevation), and there are no mountain passes or tight switchbacks like you'd find north of Atlanta. Easy driving, even for a 30-foot Class C.
511ga.org/What hookups and amenities will I find at West Point Lake campgrounds?
Most West Point Lake campgrounds offer water and 30/50-amp electric hookups, but full sewer at the site is rare since they're Corps of Engineers parks. The good news: every major campground has a free, well-maintained dump station and potable water fill near the entrance. R. Shaefer Heard has 117 sites with water/electric, hot-shower bathhouses, a swim beach, and a boat ramp. Whitetail Ridge offers laundry on-site (a nice perk for longer stays), and Holiday Campground has a dump station plus boat launches. Pro tip: top off fresh water and dump tanks before checking out, then grab any final supplies at the Walmart on US-29 just north of downtown West Point.
sam.usace.army.mil/Missions/Recreation/West-Point-Lake/What's actually inside the RVs I can rent in West Point?
You'll get more comfort than you expect. Most RVs available in West Point come fully equipped with a real bed (queen or king in many Class C and travel trailer layouts), a kitchen with stove, microwave, fridge and freezer, an indoor bathroom with shower and toilet, roof air conditioning (essential for July on West Point Lake), forced-air furnace, and dinette seating with seatbelts for travel. Many also include a flat-screen TV, Bluetooth stereo, outdoor awning, and a portable propane grill. Campervan rental West Point options are more compact but still include a bed, fridge, sink, and stove. Filter by Sleeps count on the search page to match the rig to your group size in seconds.
nhtsa.gov/road-safety/recreational-vehicle-safetyWhat add-ons and pickup options should I look for when I rent an RV in West Point?
When you rent an RV in West Point, the most useful add-ons are linen and kitchen packages (so you don't have to pack sheets, towels, pots, and plates), a generator-use package, propane refills, and the convenience kit with camp chairs, a folding table, and an outdoor rug. Many hosts also offer bike racks, kayak racks, and Starlink-equipped WiFi for remote workers. Standard pickup is at the host's home or a nearby meetup spot in West Point or LaGrange, usually between 1-3 PM, with drop-off by 11 AM. Mileage caps typically run 100-150 free miles per day. Pro tip: bundle delivery plus the linen package for the most stress-free first night at the lake.
exploregeorgia.org/How does payment and the security deposit work on an RVezy West Point rental?
Payment is simple and fully online, with no cash exchanged at pickup. When you book your motorhome rental in West Point or travel trailer, you'll pay through RVezy's secure checkout with a credit or debit card, and longer bookings can often be split between an initial payment and a balance due before pickup. A refundable security deposit is held separately from your booking payment (commonly $500 to $1,500 depending on the RV) and released after a clean, damage-free return with tanks dumped. Tip: record a short walkaround video at pickup and drop-off, share it with your host in the RVezy chat, and your deposit return goes smoothly.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360038106214-How-the-security-deposit-worksWhat's a fun local thing to do near West Point that visitors usually miss?
Here's a West Point insider move: book the free Kia Georgia plant tour. It's the only Kia manufacturing plant in the United States, sits on a large campus right in West Point, and the tram tour takes you through stamping, welding, and assembly of popular Kia models. Tours are free but must be reserved in advance, and visitors need long pants and closed-toe shoes. Pair it with a sunset paddle on West Point Lake from R. Shaefer Heard and lunch in downtown West Point, and you've got a memorable West Point RV trip day that most guidebooks miss.
