Campgrounds near Ewa Gentry
Ewa Gentry sits on the leeward south shore of Oahu, roughly 20 miles west of Honolulu and a short drive from Kapolei and Ko Olina. The community itself is residential, so RV renters typically base out of Ewa Gentry and drive to campgrounds on the North Shore, the windward coast, or the Waianae range. There are no drive-in campgrounds in central Ewa, and Oahu's interior mountains do not offer developed vehicle camping.
The closest named option is Camp Mokule‘ia, a privately run retreat and campground on Oahu's North Shore, operated by the Episcopal Diocese of Hawaii. It sits on the Mokule‘ia coast about 50 minutes from Honolulu and accepts tent campers, campervans, and guests staying in canvas tentalos built on raised platforms just steps from the beach.
Beyond Camp Mokule‘ia, most nearby options are state or county parks that require advance permits. The windward Oahu coast between Waimanalo and La‘ie holds several oceanfront campgrounds, quieter than the North Shore and easier to reach than Ka‘ena Point.
Things to do near Ewa Gentry
The Ewa plain gives quick access to Ko Olina lagoons, Kalaeloa, and the Waianae coast for snorkeling, swimming, and sunset viewing. Families staying in an RV can pair beach days with the Hawaiian Railway, the Kapolei commercial hubs for provisioning, and hikes into the Waianae foothills.
Heading out to Camp Mokule‘ia opens up the North Shore. Ka‘ena Point State Park offers a 2.5-mile coastal hike out to Oahu's westernmost point, with native seabirds, monk seals, and whale sightings in winter. Haleiwa Town is about 15 minutes from Camp Mokule‘ia, with shave ice, food trucks, and the Waialua Sugar Mill, and serves as the social hub of the North Shore. Dillingham Airfield sits across the street from the camp, with skydiving, glider rides, and hang gliding available.

Oahu has two broad seasons rather than four. Summer, roughly May through October, is drier and warmer on the leeward side around Ewa Gentry, with light trade-wind showers and generally calm south-shore surf. Winter, November through April, brings more frequent rain bands, cooler nights, and large north and west swells that make the Mokule‘ia coast, Ka‘ena, and North Shore beaches unsafe for swimming.
Central Pacific hurricane season runs from June through November, and tropical systems occasionally track near the islands, closing state parks and beach parks with little notice. The shore break at Camp Mokule‘ia can be powerful, especially in winter.
Winter is also humpback whale season and the busiest visitor period, so campground permits and RV rentals should be locked in early. Shoulder months in April, May, September, and October tend to offer easier reservation availability with warm, mostly dry weather on the Ewa side.
How to book campgrounds
Oahu camping runs on three separate systems. State parks are handled by the Hawaii Department of Land and Natural Resources, with reservations for state park sites at camping.ehawaii.gov. Reservations on Oahu open no more than 30 days in advance, and the maximum length of stay is 5 consecutive nights.
County beach parks are booked through the City and County of Honolulu at camping.honolulu.gov, with separate rules per park and typical Friday-through-Monday cycles.
To reserve at Camp Mokule‘ia, submit the online campground reservation form on the camp's website; staff follow up to confirm the booking. Popular weekends and holiday periods fill quickly, so book as soon as the window opens.
What to expect
Most Oahu campgrounds are basic: tent pads or grass, rinse showers, picnic tables, and vault or flush restrooms. Full RV hookups are rare on the island, so campervan renters should plan for dry camping, water refills at day-use parks, and dump-station stops on travel days. Generators are generally restricted.
At Camp Mokule‘ia, the property uses a locked gate system, and guests receive arrival instructions and a gate code at booking. There are no lifeguards on duty, so ocean safety is on the camper. Pets are generally not allowed at the camp, with the exception of service animals.
Statewide wildlife rules require keeping distance from monk seals and sea turtles, and these rules are enforced. Pack out trash, respect quiet hours, and confirm road and park status before driving out, since storm damage occasionally closes access roads.
