Camping near Helemano, Hawaii
Helemano is a small census-designated place on the central plateau of Oahu, north of the center of the island, about 9 miles southeast of Waialua and 25 miles northwest of Honolulu. The community sits near Wahiawa, close to pineapple fields, the Kolekole Pass area, and the roads that drop down to the North Shore. Its position makes it a practical base for RV travelers who want to reach both leeward and windward coasts within a short drive.
Camping directly in Helemano is limited, and most overnight options are found on the coasts a short drive away. The closest developed campground is Camp Mokule‘ia, a privately run retreat and campground on Oahu's North Shore, operated by the Episcopal Diocese of Hawaii, sitting on 40 acres along the Mokule‘ia coast about 50 minutes from Honolulu. Additional state and county campgrounds line the windward side of the island.
Oahu-based RV renters should plan around Hawaii's permit-first camping model, since state park campgrounds are not set up for camping in vehicles, and sleeping in vehicles in campground parking lots is not allowed.
Things to do around Helemano
The North Shore is the main draw. From Camp Mokule‘ia, travelers reach surf breaks, beaches, and the trailhead for Ka‘ena Point State Park, a coastal hike out to Oahu's westernmost point. The camp itself has snorkeling reef access and shoreline suitable for families.
Closer to Helemano, the Dole Plantation and the small town of Wahiawa offer food stops, groceries, and fuel. Haleiwa town, a short drive north, has restaurants, shave ice, and boat tours.
On the windward side, state parks add rainforest hiking and cultural sites. Ahupua‘a ‘O Kahana State Park is a living park where resident families help teach visitors about the ahupua‘a land system, and Malaekahana State Recreation Area is a well-known beach camping stretch.

Central Oahu near Helemano has a mild, tropical climate year-round, so trip timing hinges more on rainfall, surf, and crowds than on temperature. Winter, roughly November through March, is the wetter half of the year in Wahiawa, with heavy rain days common on the plateau. Winter is also North Shore surf season, which brings large swells and heavy traffic through Haleiwa on peak-swell days.
Summer, from June through August, is drier and warmer, with lighter trade-wind showers and calmer North Shore water suited to snorkeling and reef swimming. This is peak family-travel season, so campground demand at Camp Mokule‘ia and windward state parks climbs.
Shoulder months in spring and fall tend to balance moderate weather with easier reservations, though October is one of the wetter months on the plateau. Hurricane season for the Central Pacific runs June through November, and travelers should watch National Hurricane Center advisories, since tropical systems can force park and campground closures with limited notice.
How to book camping near Helemano
Oahu uses several permit systems, and none of them handle RV or trailer overnights on public land. State parks are booked through the Hawaii DLNR camping portal at camping.ehawaii.gov, where users create an account to make reservations. Permits for Oahu state park camping can be applied for no more than 30 days in advance, and the maximum length of stay at any one park is 5 consecutive nights.
City and County of Honolulu beach parks use a separate system. Reservations open at 5 p.m. Friday for camping periods two weeks in advance, and online reservations close at 11:59 p.m. HST the Thursday immediately before the camping period.
Camp Mokule‘ia books directly through its own online registration system for tent sites and tentalos, with staff following up to finalize the booking.
What to expect on the ground near Helemano
RV renters should know that Oahu is not a hookup-heavy island. Public campgrounds are tent-oriented, and vehicle overnighting in park lots is prohibited by state rules. Travelers with a campervan typically use private properties that allow vehicle stays, or park during the day and sleep in booked cabins or tent sites.
Camp Mokule‘ia is rustic and coastal, a church camp in a remote stretch of the North Shore with a large shady field and extensive beach and reef access. Sites include tent spots and raised-platform fabric tentalos, with a hot-water shower house, cold-water sinks, and campfire pits. The location is fairly remote, so travelers should stock up in Wahiawa or Haleiwa before heading out on Farrington Highway.
Expect trade-wind breezes, sun exposure, and mosquitoes in shaded areas. Reef shoes, reef-safe sunscreen, and a shade structure make coastal stays more comfortable.
