Camping near Kaaawa
Kaaawa is a small windward-coast community on Oahu, sitting between the Koolau Range and Kahana Bay. The area is rural by Oahu standards, with a two-lane Kamehameha Highway threading past beach parks, taro patches, and the cliffs made famous by film shoots at Kualoa Ranch. Renters basing an RV nearby trade nightlife for quiet bays, reef swimming, and short drives to the North Shore or Kailua.
The closest developed camping option is Camp Mokule‘ia, located across the island on Oahu's North Shore near Waialua. It is an option for travelers willing to drive around the island, though it is oriented toward tents, cabins, and groups rather than large RV rigs.
RV renters should plan carefully. Hawaii state parks do not permit sleeping in vehicles, and most Oahu campgrounds are tent-based with limited hookups. Many visitors use a rental RV for daytime touring and mobility, then book a legal overnight site or private property with vehicle camping through a peer-to-peer platform.
Things to do around Kaaawa
Kualoa Regional Park sits just south of town, with grassy shoreline, showers, restrooms, and views of Mokoli‘i (Chinaman's Hat). The water is rocky rather than sandy, so kayaking and paddling are better than swimming there. Kualoa Ranch, directly across the highway, runs ATV, horseback, zipline, and film-location tours that are the biggest paid attraction in the area.
Ahupua‘a ‘O Kahana State Park, just up the road, protects a full ridge-to-sea valley with hiking trails, a fishpond, and a bodysurfing beach. Snorkeling is best at Kaneohe Bay reefs to the south. The North Shore, Polynesian Cultural Center in Laie, and Nuuanu Pali Lookout are all reachable as day trips.

Kaaawa sits on Oahu's wet windward side. Trade winds push moisture into the Koolau cliffs, producing frequent short showers year-round and heavier rain in the wet season, roughly November through March. Kahana Valley is among the wettest spots on the island, so expect mud on trails after storms and mosquitoes near standing water.
Summer, from about May through September, is drier and steadier, with reliable trade winds and warm ocean temperatures. This is peak season for camping and reservations fill early, especially on weekends and around school breaks. Winter brings large north and west swells that can close beaches to swimming, though the windward side is more sheltered than the North Shore.
Central Pacific hurricane season runs June through November. Direct hits on Oahu are rare, but tropical systems can force park closures and campground evacuations on short notice, so travelers should monitor National Weather Service advisories.
How to book campgrounds near Kaaawa
Oahu state park permits, including Ahupua‘a ‘O Kahana and Malaekahana, are issued through the Hawaii Division of State Parks camping system. Permits can be applied for no more than 30 days in advance, and there is no camping at Oahu state parks on Wednesday or Thursday nights. Sites are tent-only, and vehicles cannot be used as sleeping quarters.
Honolulu County beach parks, including Kualoa and Bellows, use the county's online camping permit portal, which opens at 5 p.m. HST on Fridays for camping dates two weeks out. Privately operated sites such as Camp Mokule‘ia and Hipcamp listings are booked directly through their own systems, often further in advance. Bring printed permits, photo ID, and license-plate details to check-in.
What to expect
Facilities on this coast are basic. Expect cold outdoor showers, pit or flush toilets, picnic tables, and grills or fire rings at most public sites. Potable water is not guaranteed, and there are no RV hookups or dump stations at state or county beach parks. The nearest full-service RV amenities require a drive toward Honolulu or the North Shore.
Cell coverage is generally usable along Kamehameha Highway but drops in valleys. Groceries and fuel are limited in Kaaawa itself, with larger stores in Kaneohe and Laie. Nights are warm and humid, mosquitoes are the main pest, and lock-up of gear is recommended as vehicle break-ins do occur at trailheads and beach lots.
