Campgrounds and RV parks near Makakilo, HI

The leeward coast just downhill from Makakilo runs from Ko Olina's calm swimming lagoons north through Nanakuli, Maili, and Waianae to Kaena Point, the westernmost tip of the island. Snorkeling, shore fishing, and sunset watching are the main draws on this dry, sunny side. Hiking options include the Palehua and Palikea ridge trails in the Waianae range above town, and the Kaena Point Trail out to the seabird sanctuary. Central Oahu attractions such as Pearl Harbor, the Waikele shops, and Kapolei's water park are all a short drive away. Camp Mokule‘ia sits close to North Shore surf breaks, Dillingham Airfield, and the trailhead network above Mokuleia, making it a practical base for a day of surf watching or coastal hiking.

Oahu has two broad seasons rather than four. The dry summer runs roughly May through October, and the wetter winter runs October through April, with the leeward Makakilo side staying drier than the windward coast in every month. Trade winds are steady most of the year and keep temperatures moderate. Winter brings the largest north-shore surf, occasional Kona low storms, and the heaviest rainfall totals. Storm damage can close access roads: the Mokuleia vehicle access road into Kaena Point State Park has closed in past winters after Kona Low events, and campers should check DLNR State Parks alerts before driving out. Summer and early fall are hot and reliably dry on the leeward side, and this is also the Central Pacific hurricane season, which officially runs June through November. Late summer and early fall are often the warmest time of year on Oahu, with August and September running slightly hotter than June and July because ocean temperatures lag.

Oahu camping is different from mainland RV travel. State park campgrounds are not set up for vehicles, campers, vans, or trailers, and most public sites are tent-oriented beach parks without RV hookups, dump stations, or long paved pull-throughs. Campervans and small Class B rigs are a better fit than large motorhomes, and rig length and hookup needs should be confirmed with each campground before booking. Open fires and beach bonfires are prohibited at public parks and beaches statewide; cooking is limited to above-ground grills raised at least 12 inches off the ground. Pets are restricted at most campgrounds. Expect gates that lock overnight at some parks, permit checks by park staff, and limited cell service at west-side and North Shore campgrounds. Bring reef-safe sunscreen, plenty of water for the dry leeward coast, and a printed copy of the permit.
