Camping near Maunawili, Hawaii
Maunawili sits in a windward valley on Oahu between the Koolau Range and Kailua, close to the Pali Highway and roughly 40 minutes from Honolulu. The area itself is residential and forested, so most RV travelers base at campgrounds elsewhere on Oahu and drive in for hikes, beaches, and the windward coastline.
Camp Mokule‘ia is a privately run retreat and campground on Oahu's North Shore, operated by the Episcopal Diocese of Hawaii, sitting on 40 acres along a pristine stretch of the Mokule‘ia coast about 50 minutes from Honolulu. It is the nearest full-service tent camping option to Maunawili and a common base for visitors mixing windward hikes with North Shore beach days.
Oahu overall has limited RV infrastructure. Camping happens mostly at state parks, county beach parks, and private retreats like Camp Mokule‘ia. Renters should plan for tent-style pads, cabins, or oceanfront sites rather than full hookups, and confirm vehicle length and access rules with each operator before booking.
Things to do near Maunawili
The valley is best known for hiking. The Maunawili Road trailhead has been closed for several years, so hikers now reach the falls via the Maunawili Demonstration Trail off the Pali Highway. The route is roughly 5 miles round-trip and can take several hours, mostly a shaded ridge that descends into and follows a stream, so it can be muddy in sections.
Kailua and Lanikai beaches are a short drive away for swimming, kayaking, and paddleboarding. Nuuanu Pali Lookout sits just up the Pali Highway with sweeping windward views.
Basing at Camp Mokule‘ia on the North Shore adds ocean access steps from camp, with dolphins and sea turtles sometimes visible offshore, plus safe snorkeling and hiking through a nearby tropical forest preserve.

Oahu has a tropical climate with warm temperatures year-round and two distinct seasons: a dry summer from May to October and a wetter winter from November to April. Windward valleys like Maunawili sit against the Koolau Range and catch significantly more rain than leeward Honolulu, so trails stay muddy well into spring.
Summer is the busiest booking window. Sites at popular campgrounds fill weeks ahead, and North Shore surf drops to calm conditions ideal for snorkeling. Winter brings big north-shore swells, heavier rain, and occasional flash-flood watches in windward streams.
Hurricane season in the Central Pacific runs June through November, with peak activity in July and August, and tropical systems can force short-notice closures at coastal parks. Fall shoulder months offer warm water, thinning crowds, and reasonable trail conditions, though rainfall picks up again by November.
How to book Maunawili-area camping
Oahu state parks use the Hawaii Division of State Parks online reservation system. Permits are required for overnight stays and typically open months in advance, with strict per-site occupancy limits and closed days. County beach parks on Oahu use the Honolulu Department of Parks and Recreation permit system and are closed at least one night per week for maintenance.
To reserve at Camp Mokule‘ia, guests fill out a reservation request form and the camp confirms within two to three business days to finalize the booking. The property also lists bookable sites through Campspot.
Book as early as possible for summer, holidays, and long weekends. Confirm rig length, whether hookups or generators are permitted, and any gate-code or check-in cutoffs before arrival.
What to expect at Maunawili-area campgrounds
Most Oahu campgrounds are tent-oriented with shared restrooms, cold-water rinse showers, and picnic tables. Full RV hookups are rare, and many parks restrict generator hours. Expect gravel or grass pads, tropical vegetation close to sites, and shared beach access rather than paved loops.
Camp Mokule‘ia offers campfire pits, cold water sinks, and a hot water shower house, and its wood and fabric tentalos are built on raised platforms that sleep up to four, sit close to the beach, are well ventilated, and each include a private firepit and picnic table alongside the ocean shore. The camp uses a locked gate system with arrival instructions and a gate code provided at booking, so plan check-in and late-night runs around the gate schedule.
Bring reef-safe sunscreen, insect repellent, and sturdy footwear for muddy trails.
