Campgrounds near Mililani Mauka
Mililani Mauka sits in central Oʻahu, about 10 miles northwest of Honolulu on the mauka (mountain) side of Interstate H-2. The community sits at roughly 880 feet of elevation on the flanks of the Koʻolau Range, which puts most of Oʻahu's campgrounds within a 30 to 60 minute drive. There are no campgrounds inside Mililani Mauka itself, so RV travelers base themselves here and reach the coast in either direction.
The closest developed camping is on the North Shore near Waialua. Camp Mokule‘ia is an Episcopal Camp and Retreat Center located on the North Shore of Oahu, and it is the nearest option for travelers coming from Mililani Mauka. It accepts tent campers, small rigs, and guests staying in its raised fabric tentalos on platforms just back from the beach.
Other Oʻahu options within easy driving range include state parks on the windward coast and county beach parks around the island. Almost all of them are drive-in sites rather than full RV hookups, so trip planning around amenities matters more here than on the mainland.
Things to do near Mililani Mauka
The North Shore is the primary draw for campers based near Mililani Mauka. The Camp Mokule‘ia site sits only steps from the warm Hawaiian waters where dolphins and sea turtles may be spotted, and the camp offers safe snorkeling and hiking through a tropical forest preserve. The reef fronting the beach calms in summer and is good for swimming and snorkeling on light-wind days.
Haleʻiwa town, roughly 15 minutes from the campground, is the supply hub for the North Shore and a good stop for groceries, shave ice, and surf shops. Farther west, the road ends at Kaʻena Point, a coastal reserve with a flat out-and-back trail to an albatross nesting area.
On the windward side, Kualoa Regional Park delivers Koʻolau ridge views and Mokoliʻi (Chinaman's Hat) offshore. Central Oʻahu itself is close to the Dole Plantation and the Wahiawā botanical area.

Oʻahu has two broad seasons rather than four. The dry season runs roughly May through October, when trade winds are steady and rainfall on the leeward and central parts of the island is light. This is the busiest stretch for camping, and North Shore surf is smaller and swimmable at most beaches. Summer weekends fill first at Camp Mokule‘ia, so booking well ahead is standard.
The wet season runs November through April. Kona lows and upper-level disturbances can produce heavy rain and flash flooding, and winter brings the large North Shore surf that draws crowds to Waimea, Sunset, and Pipeline but makes ocean swimming near Mokuleʻia less predictable.
Central Pacific hurricane season runs June 1 through November 30. Direct hits on Oʻahu are rare, but tropical systems can force short-notice campground closures in late summer and early fall, so travelers should track NHC advisories when booking in that window.
How to book
Reservation systems on Oʻahu are split by land manager. Hawaii state parks and City and County of Honolulu beach parks are booked through the state's camping portals, and popular windward locations often fill within minutes of release, so setting a calendar reminder is worthwhile.
Camp Mokule‘ia reservations must be requested through their official website form at campmokuleia.org; phone inquiries are accepted, but bookings are confirmed only after submission and approval. Guests can pitch a tent or book a comfortable fabric tent, and group areas are handled the same way through the camp office rather than a government portal.
Confirm rig-length limits and hookup availability before arrival, since many Oʻahu sites are tent-oriented and not built for larger motorhomes.
What to expect
Most Oʻahu campgrounds are basic. Expect cold-water rinse showers, pit or flush toilets, picnic tables, and shared fire rings rather than full RV hookups. At Camp Mokule‘ia, guests can enjoy cozy evenings around the campfire pit, refresh with cold water sinks, and unwind in the hot water shower house, which is a step above the county standard. Each tentalo also provides a private firepit and picnic table outside alongside the ocean shore.
Gate hours and locked entries are common at private camps and county parks, so arrival windows matter. Cell coverage is generally good on the North Shore but can drop in valleys.
Mosquitoes, centipedes, and feral chickens are part of the experience. Store food in sealed containers, bring reef-safe sunscreen (required by Hawaii law), and plan for warm, humid nights year-round.
