Campgrounds near Waiahole-Waikane
Waiahole-Waikane sits on Oahu's windward coast along Kamehameha Highway, between Kaneohe and Kualoa. Waikane lies mostly along the coastline of Kaneohe Bay and consists of several lush valleys that extend inland to the steep face of the Koolau pali, with Waiahole the first valley north of Kahaluu, followed by Waikane, Hakipuu, and Kualoa. The area is mostly undeveloped and rural in character, with many small farms.
There are no campgrounds directly in Waiahole or Waikane themselves, so RV travelers base out of nearby windward and North Shore sites. The closest full-service private option is Camp Mokule‘ia, a privately run retreat and campground on Oahu's North Shore, operated by the Episcopal Diocese of Hawaii, sitting on 40 acres along the Mokule‘ia coast, about 50 minutes from Honolulu. Reaching it from Waiahole-Waikane involves a scenic cross-island drive of roughly an hour.
Within a short drive along the windward coast, RV renters can also access state and county campgrounds at Kahana Bay, Kualoa Regional Park, and Malaekahana. All Oahu public campgrounds require advance permits, and site sizes vary, so campervans and smaller Class B or C rigs generally fit best.
Things to do near Waiahole-Waikane
The immediate area is rural and quiet. Waiahole Beach Park is a low-key spot on the windward coast, with a shallow reef unsuitable for swimming but scenic views of Mokoli‘i Island and the Koolau Mountains, popular with local fishermen. Curious visitors can drive past the historic Waiahole Ditch corridor, see the Waikane Pier known as a filming location, and stop at the Waikane Store for local-style plate lunches.
A short drive north opens up Kualoa Regional Park and Kahana Bay for beach time, hiking, and photography. Kahana Bay offers a historic fishpond at low tide, fine sand, ample shade, and gentle surf good for bodyboarding. Byodo-In Temple and the Ho‘omaluhia Botanical Garden are within easy reach for rainy-day plans. Guests staying at Camp Mokule‘ia can also access North Shore surf towns and Ka‘ena Point.

Waiahole-Waikane sits on Oahu's Windward Coast, so rain can occur year-round, though the dry season (roughly May through September) generally offers more consistent sunny weather ideal for hiking and exploring. Windward valleys catch trade-wind showers even when leeward beaches stay dry, so RV travelers should plan for wet trails after storms.
Summer through early fall is peak booking season for Oahu campgrounds, and permits move quickly. For county and state parks, book at camping.ehawaii.gov. Spots open 30 days in advance and go quickly. Late fall through winter brings bigger north- and east-shore surf, higher rainfall totals, and occasional flash-flood advisories in windward valleys.
Hurricane season runs June through November across the central Pacific, though direct strikes on Oahu are uncommon. Trade winds are strongest in summer and can affect exposed tent setups; sheltered valleys and back-of-beach sites offer more comfortable conditions in windy stretches.
How to book campgrounds near Waiahole-Waikane
Public campgrounds on Oahu are permit-only, and there is no first-come drive-up camping at state or county parks. State park permits are booked through camping.ehawaii.gov and open 30 days in advance. County parks in Honolulu, including Kualoa Regional Park, use the City and County of Honolulu camping system, which also opens a limited window in advance.
Most state windward campgrounds close midweek. Camping is tent-only at Kahana Bay, with the site closed on Tuesday and Wednesday nights, and stays capped at five consecutive nights.
For a private option with more flexibility, Camp Mokule‘ia takes campground and tentalo reservations through an online form linked from the camp's website, which also provides a downloadable campground map.
What to expect near Waiahole-Waikane
Expect a rural, residential setting in Waiahole and Waikane itself, with narrow shoulders along Kamehameha Highway and limited services. Waiahole Beach Park is a simple grassy area with shady trees and minimal facilities, so plan to fuel up and provision in Kaneohe or Kahuku.
Windward shorelines share common conditions: reef-lined bays with limited swimming, warm brackish streams after rain, and reddish water in some bays where runoff from valleys carries clay soil into the ocean. This coloring is a natural feature, not a water-quality concern.
At Camp Mokule‘ia on the North Shore, sites are grassy and shaded but rustic, and the camp uses a locked gate system with arrival instructions and a gate code issued at booking. Beachfront tent sites are walk-in, so campervan drivers park in the designated lot and walk gear to the ocean, or opt for a tentalo instead.
