Camping near Waimalu, Hawaii
Waimalu sits in the Pearl City area of central Oahu, a short drive from Honolulu and within reach of camping options across the island. The town itself has no campground, but Oahu's public and private sites are clustered along the coast and in the forested ridges above Pearl Harbor. State park camping on Oahu is offered at Ahupuaa o Kahana State Park, Malaekahana State Recreation Area, Keaiwa Heiau State Recreation Area, and Sand Island State Recreation Area when available. The nearest state-park option to Waimalu is Keaiwa Heiau State Recreation Area, set in eucalyptus forest above the town with views over Pearl Harbor.
The closest private campground is Camp Mokule‘ia on the North Shore. Camp Mokule‘ia is a privately run retreat and campground operated by the Episcopal Diocese of Hawaii, sitting on 40 acres along the Mokule‘ia coast about 50 minutes from Honolulu. Most Oahu campgrounds are tent-oriented, and full-hookup RV sites are scarce, so campervan renters should plan for boondocking-style stays or private campgrounds that accept vehicles.
Things to do near Waimalu
Waimalu's location puts Pearl Harbor, Honolulu, and the windward and North Shore coasts all within an hour's drive. The Pearl Harbor National Memorial sits minutes south of town, with the USS Arizona, USS Missouri, and the Pacific Aviation Museum on Ford Island. Hikers can head straight uphill from Waimalu to Keaiwa Heiau State Recreation Area, known for the Aiea Loop Trail and a preserved Hawaiian healing temple. Snorkeling at Hanauma Bay and surf-watching on the North Shore are both day-trip distances. In winter, the stretch from Waimea Bay through Sunset Beach and the Banzai Pipeline draws elite surfers and large crowds. Families with younger kids tend to stick to the calmer south and leeward beaches.

Oahu has two practical seasons: a drier, hotter summer from roughly May through September, and a wetter, cooler winter from October through April. Trade winds blow most of the year and keep daytime temperatures steady. Rain on the leeward south side near Waimalu is generally light, while the windward and upland areas see more frequent showers, especially in winter.
Surf conditions drive a lot of trip planning. Winter brings very large surf to north and west shore beaches, with powerful shore break and strong undertow that pull swimmers off the sand and force frequent lifeguard rescues. Inexperienced surfers should avoid the North Shore in peak wave season, when even seasoned watermen can get into trouble. Summer flips the pattern: north shores calm down and south-facing breaks pick up modest swells, which is also when most family campers book. Hurricane risk runs roughly June through November, though direct strikes on Oahu are rare.
Booking and permits
Camping on Oahu is permit-based and reservations are essential. Camping is only allowed in designated campgrounds and campsites on state, county, or private land, and a permit is required in every public site. State park permits are reserved through the state portal at camping.ehawaii.gov, while City and County of Honolulu permits are reserved through the Honolulu camping system. State camping permits on Oahu may be reserved up to 30 days in advance, and city permits open at 5 pm HST on Fridays for periods two weeks ahead. All permits must be paid in full at the time of reservation. Camp Mokule‘ia uses its own process: submit a reservation request form on the camp website, and staff follow up within two to three business days to finalize the booking.
What to expect
Most Oahu public campgrounds are coastal beach parks with basic facilities: restrooms, cold-water showers, and picnic areas, but limited or no electric and water hookups for RVs. Campervan travelers have even fewer choices, since several public campgrounds only allow tents. Renters in a campervan should target private campgrounds. At Camp Mokule‘ia, expect a gated, monitored property with a locked-gate system, an arrival code issued at booking, and a quiet, ironwood-shaded beachfront. There are no lifeguards on site, and the shore break can be powerful, especially in winter, so check conditions before going in. Bring reef-safe sunscreen, water shoes, and bug repellent.
