Camping near Wheeler Air Force Base
Wheeler Air Force Base sits on the central Oahu plateau between the Waianae and Koolau ranges, roughly 20 miles northwest of Honolulu and within a 30 to 40 minute drive of the North Shore. The area works as a base camp for trips to Waialua, Haleiwa, and Mokuleia beaches, plus the leeward and windward coasts.
Dedicated tent-style camping close to Wheeler is limited. Camp Mokule‘ia is the diocesan-affiliated camp and retreat center located on the North Shore of O‘ahu, roughly 40 miles northwest of Honolulu, at the foot of the Wai‘anae Mountains, and it sits on about 40 acres of coastline. It offers tent sites and raised platform wood-and-fabric tents known as tentalos.
RV renters should plan carefully. Hawai‘i’s State Park campgrounds are not set up for camping in vehicles, including campers, vans, and trailers, and sleeping in vehicles in campground parking lots is not allowed. Most Oahu camping options are tent-only, so RV travelers typically use a campervan-style vehicle at private grounds, or pair a rental vehicle with hotel or vacation-rental lodging.
Things to do near Wheeler Air Force Base
The central location puts most of Oahu within reach. North Shore beaches, Haleiwa town, and Waimea Bay are a short drive north, while Pearl Harbor historic sites sit south along H-2.
Ka‘ena Point State Park anchors the far western tip of the island, though the Mokule‘ia vehicle access road remains closed due to unsafe road conditions, with the section open to pedestrian and bicycle access. Haleiwa Town, a short drive from Mokule‘ia, has shave ice, shrimp trucks, and the Waialua Sugar Mill, and functions as the social hub of the North Shore.
Keaiwa Heiau State Recreation Area covers 384 acres and has a camping area, picnic tables, and the popular Aiea Loop hiking trail, with covered pavilions and barbecue grills, useful for a day hike close to the central plateau. Kayaking, snorkeling, and surf-watching round out beach days on the North Shore.

Central Oahu is warm year-round with two broad seasons. The climate of Hawai‘i features mild temperatures throughout the year, moderate humidity, persistence of northeasterly trade winds, significant differences in rainfall within short distances, and infrequent severe storms. The warmest months are typically August and September, and the coolest are February and March, reflecting the seasonal lag in ocean temperature.
Ocean conditions drive the North Shore calendar. Summer, roughly May through September, is when North Shore waters stay calm and swimming is generally safe. Winter brings serious North Shore swells, so ocean entry gets dangerous, but the cool months also bring humpback whale sightings offshore.
Rainfall is heaviest in the cool-season months, with brief passing showers common on the plateau even in dry stretches. Trade winds usually keep humidity comfortable. Central Pacific hurricane season runs June through November, with the highest risk typically in late summer.
How to book camping on Oahu
State park camping is handled by the Hawaii Department of Land and Natural Resources. Beginning February 1, 2026, camping reservations transitioned to a new system at explore.ehawaii.gov, and campers need to create an account on the Explore Outdoor Hawai‘i site to book. Permits for O‘ahu camping can be applied for no more than 30 days in advance. There is no camping at State Parks on Oahu on Wednesday and Thursday nights, and Sand Island State Park is only open Friday through Sunday nights.
Permits are required for both state park and City and County of Honolulu campgrounds on Oahu, with City and County of Honolulu campsite permits available online at camping.honolulu.gov or in person at the DPR Permits office in the Fasi Municipal building.
Camp Mokule‘ia is private and books directly. Campground or tentalo reservations are made by submitting a form on the camp’s website, and staff follow up to finalize the booking.
What to expect
Expect basic, tent-oriented facilities and strong ocean influence. Camping is offered at four O‘ahu state parks, and all opportunities are for tent camping with simple developed campsites. Restrooms and cold-water rinse showers are typical; full RV hookups are rare on the island.
At Camp Mokule‘ia, campers use campfire pits, cold water sinks, and a hot water shower house, and tentalos are built on raised platforms, sleep a maximum of four people comfortably, sit close to the beach, and are well ventilated. The gate locks at night, so campers get a code at check-in and plan around it.
Ocean safety matters. There are no lifeguards on duty, so ocean safety falls on the camper, and the shore break at Mokule‘ia can be powerful, especially in winter. Campfires and bonfires are illegal on all public beaches and parks in Hawaii, and above-ground barbecue grills must be at least 12 inches off the ground.
