Campgrounds near McCammon, Idaho
McCammon sits in Bannock County along the Portneuf River in southeast Idaho, roughly 20 miles south of Pocatello on Interstate 15. The town is part of the Pocatello metropolitan area and functions as a quiet base for RV travelers headed to Lava Hot Springs, about 10 miles east on U.S. Highway 30.
Most campgrounds within a short drive of McCammon cluster around Lava Hot Springs and the Portneuf River corridor. Lost Trail - Motel, RV Park, and Campground sits closest to town, while Lava Hot Springs West KOA Holiday, Lava Hot Springs East KOA Holiday, Rivers Edge, and Lava Spa Motel and RV Park line the river through Lava. Options range from full-hookup pull-throughs with 50-amp service to power-only riverside sites.
The surrounding landscape is a mountain valley near 4,800 feet of elevation, framed by the Portneuf Range to the east and the Bannock Range to the west. Nights cool sharply even in July, and Marsh Creek joins the Portneuf near town, feeding an agricultural valley that opens toward Lava.
Things to do near McCammon
The main draw is the Lava Hot Springs complex. The mineral hot pools operate year-round except Thanksgiving and Christmas Day, and the Olympic Swimming Complex with water slides and diving platforms runs from Memorial Day through Labor Day. Floating the Portneuf River on tubes is a staple family activity in summer, with rental outfitters along the highway through Lava.
Fishing licenses are required and can be purchased through Idaho Fish and Game or at local outlets such as the Sunnyside Sinclair on Highway 30. Anglers work the Portneuf for trout directly from riverfront sites at Rivers Edge and both KOA properties.
Beyond the river, visitors ride ATV and mountain-bike trails in the Portneuf Range, tour the Historic Chesterfield townsite, and ski at Pebble Creek Ski Area on Bonneville Peak near Inkom. McCammon also works as a staging point for day trips toward Pocatello, Bear Lake, and Yellowstone.

The developed RV camping season in this corridor generally runs from April 1 through October 31, weather permitting. Both KOA properties in Lava Hot Springs follow that window for RV and tent sites, while their cabin lodging stays open year-round. Peak demand runs from mid-June through Labor Day, with weekends booking out weeks ahead when the river is high enough for tubing.
Spring is the wettest stretch. May averages the most rainfall of any month, and mud can be an issue at grass or dirt sites. Late spring runoff also affects river float conditions. Fall brings cooler nights, thinner crowds, and generally dry days into mid-October, making it a strong shoulder season for RV renters who want quieter sites.
Winter is cold and snowy, with January the snowiest month. Overnight lows drop well below freezing, so travelers arriving November through March should plan around cabin lodging or confirm which sites remain accessible, and expect limited on-site services.
How to book campgrounds near McCammon
Private parks in this area, including Lost Trail - Motel, RV Park, and Campground, Lava Hot Springs West KOA Holiday, Lava Hot Springs East KOA Holiday, Rivers Edge, and Lava Spa Motel and RV Park, take reservations directly through their own websites or by phone. The two KOA properties can also be booked through the KOA reservation platform at koa.com. Riverside sites and pull-throughs long enough for larger fifth wheels sell out first for summer weekends and holidays.
For public options, dispersed camping on nearby BLM land is first-come, first-served with the standard 14-day stay limit. Developed Caribou-Targhee National Forest campgrounds in the region use Recreation.gov. Book named private campgrounds six to eight weeks ahead for July and August; shoulder-season stays can often be secured a week out.
What to expect on-site
Sites along the Portneuf River are narrow in places, and access roads can be tight for rigs over 35 feet. Lava Hot Springs East KOA Holiday and Rivers Edge both offer riverfront pads; travelers with longer trailers should call ahead to confirm site length and turning radius. Full hookups with 20, 30, and 50-amp power are standard at the larger parks, while some smaller campgrounds provide power only, with centralized water and shared restrooms.
Active rail lines run through the valley, and train horns are audible at sites near the tracks in McCammon and along the Portneuf. Cell coverage is generally reliable in and around McCammon and Lava, weaker on outlying BLM parcels.
Most private campgrounds are pet-friendly on leash, though pets are not permitted inside the hot springs facilities. Firewood, propane, and basic groceries are available in Lava; larger supply runs go to Pocatello.
