Campgrounds near Anna, Illinois
Anna sits in Union County in far southern Illinois, on the western edge of the Shawnee National Forest and within easy reach of the Mississippi River. RV travelers use Anna as a base for the Illinois Ozark Hills, sandstone bluff country, and river-bottom parks along the Missouri border. Most surrounding campgrounds are state-run and lean rustic, with a mix of electric and primitive sites.
The closest option is Trail Of Tears State Forest, a state forest of just over 5,000 acres about five miles northwest of Jonesboro. Northeast of town, Horse Camp - Giant City State Park sits inside one of Illinois' most-visited state parks, known for its sandstone Giant City Streets and 1930s CCC lodge. Little Grassy Lake Campground and Marina offers lakefront sites with hookups inside the Crab Orchard National Wildlife Refuge.
Farther afield, Mississippi River - Trail of Tears State Park lies across the river in Missouri, and Horse Camp - Ferne Clyffe State Park serves equestrian travelers near Goreville. Together these sites cover full-hookup RV pads, walk-in tent camping, and horse camps.
Things to do near Anna
Hiking is the anchor activity. Giant City State Park has short, family-friendly loops through sandstone bluffs plus the 12-mile Red Cedar backpacking trail, while Ferne Clyffe features a 100-foot intermittent waterfall on Big Rocky Hollow and the shelter bluff at Hawks' Cave. Trail Of Tears State Forest adds fire trails open year-round for hiking across rugged Ozark Hills terrain and includes the Ozark Hills Nature Preserve.
Water and wildlife round out the trip. Little Grassy Lake Campground and Marina rents canoes, kayaks, stand-up paddleboards, pontoons, and fishing boats, and its beach is family-friendly. Anglers can bank-fish park ponds for bluegill, largemouth bass, and channel catfish with an Illinois license.
Rock climbing and rappelling are permitted at Giant City in two designated areas, Devil's Standtable cliff and the Shelter #1 bluff at the Makanda entrance, and the Shawnee Hills Wine Trail links wineries in the surrounding hills.

Peak camping season runs from late May through Labor Day, with warm, humid days and the highest occupancy at Giant City and Little Grassy. Spring brings wildflowers, waterfalls with reliable flow, and the greenest forest, though April and May are typically wet and storms can be severe in southern Illinois. Fall delivers reliable oak-and-hickory color through October and cooler nights that suit RV travel.
Winter is quieter. Giant City's campground remains open December through March on a first-come basis, but the Class A shower building closes the day after the first shotgun deer season and reopens April 1. Overnight lows commonly fall below freezing, and snow is possible.
Seasonal closures matter for trip planning. At Trail Of Tears State Forest, gravel roads close to vehicles from December 24 through the end of spring wild turkey season, generally the second week of May, and Class C vehicle-access sites are closed during that window. Class D backpack sites remain open year-round. Little Grassy Lake Campground and Marina operates seasonally from April 1 through October 31.
Booking and reservations
Illinois state park campsites, including Class A sites at Giant City and reservable sites at Ferne Clyffe, are booked through the ExploreMoreIL system, generally up to six months in advance. Reservations at Giant City are seasonal, available April 1 through November 30. From December 1 through March 31 the campground stays open but all sites are first-come, first-served. The Class C walk-in area and the Youth Group camp are not reservable.
Equestrian sites at Horse Camp - Giant City State Park are also booked through ExploreMoreIL and require that the party include horses. Trail Of Tears State Forest uses ExploreMoreIL for reservations, with a self-registration option at the white barn on arrival.
Little Grassy Lake Campground and Marina takes reservations directly by phone. For summer weekends and holidays, booking several weeks ahead is recommended, especially for lakefront and full-hookup sites.
What to expect
Most parks in the area lean rustic. Giant City's Class A loop has 85 sites with electricity, access to water, showers, and a dump station, though individual sewer hookups are not provided; campers fill and dump on the way in and out. Sites sit close together with heavy tree cover, and tight interior roads can be challenging for larger rigs.
Trail Of Tears State Forest is primitive: Class C and Class D tent-oriented sites with picnic tables, fire rings, and privies, and no electric or water hookups. Large campers are discouraged due to narrow gravel roads. Little Grassy Lake offers full and partial hookups with a 30-foot maximum RV length, and cell service is limited.
Bring insect repellent, a first-aid kit, and awareness of copperheads and timber rattlesnakes on rocky trails. Poison ivy is common off-trail. Quiet hours at state park campgrounds are 10 p.m. to 7 a.m., and pets must be leashed.

Frequently asked questions about campgrounds near Anna, IL
How much does it cost to rent an RV in Anna, IL?
An RV rental in Anna is one of the most affordable ways to explore southern Illinois and the Shawnee National Forest. On RVezy, travel trailers typically start around $90 to $150 per night, Class C motorhomes run roughly $175 to $275, and larger Class A rigs can climb past $300. Because hosts set their own pricing, you can find a cheap RV rental in Anna by booking midweek, traveling in shoulder months like April or late September, or filtering for well-maintained older trailers. Pro tip: pairing a smaller travel trailer with a host who offers delivery often costs less than renting a big drivable rig, since you skip the fuel of moving a 30-foot motorhome through the Shawnee Hills.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Anna,%20IllinoisDo I need a special license to drive an RV rental in Illinois?
Good news for first-time renters: a regular driver's license is all you need to rent an RV in Anna. Illinois does not require a commercial driver's license (CDL) or any RV-specific endorsement for personal-use motorhomes and travel trailers under 26,000 pounds, which covers essentially every rig on RVezy. RVezy approved drivers are generally 25 or older, and your ID is verified right inside the platform during booking. Visiting from outside the US? Bring your home-country license plus an International Driving Permit (IDP) from your local auto club. That's it, you can be cruising US-51 toward Giant City State Park the same afternoon you pick up.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039008774-Understanding-approved-driver-requirementsWhat protection is included when I rent an RV in Anna?
Every RVezy booking in Anna comes with a renter protection plan and 24/7 roadside assistance built in, so you can hit the Shawnee Hills Wine Trail with peace of mind. During checkout you choose the protection level that fits your trip, and that plan covers most accidental damage to the RV itself. Roadside help (flat tires, lockouts, jump starts, tows) is included around the clock anywhere in the continental US. Pro tip: bumping up to a higher protection tier for a long Garden of the Gods loop usually costs just a few dollars more per night and lets you focus on the trip instead of the what-ifs.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailWhat if my plans change? Can I cancel my Anna RV rental?
Yes, booking is low-risk. RVezy (not the individual host) sets the cancellation policy for every rental in Anna, and it includes a money-back grace period right after you book so you can lock in dates with confidence. After that window, refunds depend on how far out you are from your trip start date. Because the policy applies platform-wide, it is not displayed on individual RV listings. If a host ever cancels on you, RVezy refunds you or provides credits to help rebook. Pro tip: book early to secure the best Shawnee-area rigs, knowing the grace period has your back if your schedule shifts in the first few days.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360037736674-Understanding-the-cancellation-policy-for-guestsCan I bring my dog on an RV rental in Anna, IL?
Absolutely, and southern Illinois is a fantastic place to do it. Many hosts offer pet-friendly RV rental Anna options; just flip the Pet-Friendly filter on RVezy and you'll see rigs that welcome dogs (some allow cats too). Once you arrive, the Shawnee National Forest allows leashed pets in nearly all campgrounds, including Oak Point at Lake Glendale and Camp Cadiz, and Giant City State Park about 25 minutes north has dog-friendly trails through sandstone bluffs. Pro tip: message the host before booking to confirm any pet fee or breed notes, and pack a tie-out, since the wooded sites at Lake Glendale and Pounds Hollow are perfect for letting your dog relax at camp.
fs.usda.gov/r09/shawnee/recreation/camping-cabinsCan the RV be delivered to my campsite near Anna?
Yes, RV delivery in Anna is one of the easiest ways to start your trip, especially if you've never towed before. Many RVezy hosts in Union County and the surrounding Shawnee region will drive the RV to your campground, set up the leveling jacks, hook up power and water, and walk you through every system before they leave. Popular delivery destinations include Lake Glendale's Oak Point, Dixon Springs State Park, and private parks near Vienna. Delivery fees are usually based on mileage from the host's location. Pro tip: use the Delivery filter on RVezy and message a couple of hosts with your campground name, you'll often find someone already familiar with your exact site.
dnr.illinois.gov/parks/park.dixonsprings.htmlHow far can I drive on a typical RV rental from Anna?
Plenty far for an amazing southern Illinois adventure. Most hosts in Anna include a daily mileage allowance (often 100 to 150 free miles per day) with a reasonable per-mile rate after that, and some list RV rental with unlimited mileage for road-trippers. From Anna you're about 35 minutes to Giant City State Park, 1 hour to Garden of the Gods, 2 hours to St. Louis, 2.5 hours to Nashville, and roughly 5.5 hours to Chicago. Pro tip: if you're planning a multi-stop RV road trip from Anna across the Shawnee Hills Wine Trail, message a few hosts and ask for an unlimited-mileage quote, many will customize a package for longer trips.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Anna,%20IllinoisWhat are the best campgrounds near Anna, IL for an RV?
You're spoiled for choice. The best campgrounds near Anna for RV camping include: Lake Glendale's Oak Point Campground (lakeside sites with electric, showers, and a dump station inside Shawnee National Forest, about 1 hour east); Dixon Springs State Park (electric hookups and a pool on site, about 45 minutes southeast); Ferne Clyffe State Park near Goreville (Turkey Ridge loop with electric sites and waterfall hikes); Giant City State Park about 25 minutes north (electric sites and great hiking); and Trail of Tears State Forest right outside Anna for primitive sites. Pro tip: Illinois state-park sites book through the Camp IL system up to six months in advance, while Forest Service sites at Lake Glendale are first-come, first-served, so arrive Thursday for a weekend.
camp.exploremoreil.com/When is the best time to visit Anna, IL in an RV?
The sweet spots are mid-April through May and mid-September through late October. Spring brings dogwood and redbud blooms across the Shawnee Hills with daytime highs in the 60s to mid-70s, and fall delivers some of the Midwest's best foliage at Garden of the Gods with crisp 60 to 75 degree days. Summers in Anna are hot and humid (highs near 88 to 90 in July with heat index often well above 100), and winters are chilly but quiet, with January highs around 44. Late spring is the wettest period, so pack a rain layer. Pro tip: late September weekends line up perfectly with the Shawnee Hills Wine Trail's harvest events and the cooler evenings make campfire nights genuinely cozy.
weather.gov/pah/I'm a first-time renter, is this trip really doable?
Yes, and Anna is one of the friendlier places in the country to learn. Your RVezy host gives you a hands-on orientation at pickup, walking through the propane, water, generator, slide-outs, and dump procedure, so you're never figuring it out from a YouTube video in a campground. The roads around Union County are flat to gently rolling, traffic is light, and US-51 and IL-146 are easy two-lane drives. If towing makes you nervous, choose a Class B campervan or book delivery and skip driving the big rig entirely. Pro tip: do a short shakedown night at a nearby full-hookup park before pushing deeper into the forest, you'll learn your rig on easy, level pads.
idot.illinois.gov/travel-information/road-conditions/indexWhat happens if the RV breaks down during my trip?
You're covered. Every RVezy rental in Anna includes 24/7 roadside assistance as part of the protection plan, so a flat tire on IL-146, a dead battery at Lake Glendale, or a lockout at Garden of the Gods is a single phone call away from help, day or night. RVezy's customer support team is also reachable before, during, and after your trip, and your host is usually a quick text away for questions about quirky switches or appliances. Pro tip: save the roadside number in your phone before you leave the driveway and keep a printed copy in the glove box, cell service can drop in pockets of the Shawnee National Forest east of Vienna.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailCan I take my Anna RV rental into Missouri, Kentucky, or other states?
Yes, interstate travel is welcome on most RVezy rentals from Anna, which is great because you're sitting near the crossroads of four states. Popular routes include crossing into Cape Girardeau, MO (about 35 minutes west), Paducah, KY (about 1 hour southeast), Nashville, TN (about 2.5 hours), and the Mark Twain National Forest (about 2 hours). Confirm with your host when booking that your intended states are covered, most are. Travel into Mexico is not permitted on any RVezy rental. Pro tip: a loop from Anna through Cape Girardeau, down the Great River Road to Cairo, and back via the Ohio River and Garden of the Gods is a stellar 3 to 4 day RV road trip from Anna.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039340074-Insurance-coverage-validityWhat should I budget for fuel on an Anna RV trip?
Fuel is more predictable here than you'd think. Southern Illinois gas prices typically run a bit below the national average, and Anna has multiple stations along US-51. Expect roughly 8 to 10 MPG for a Class C motorhome, 6 to 8 MPG for a Class A, and 10 to 14 MPG when towing a travel trailer with a pickup. A long weekend looping Anna, Garden of the Gods, and Lake Glendale (about 200 miles total) usually runs $80 to $130 in fuel for a midsize motorhome at current prices. Pro tip: fill up in Anna or Marion before heading deep into the Shawnee, prices climb at the small stations near Eddyville and Herod.
eia.gov/petroleum/gasdiesel/How far in advance should I book a campground near Anna?
For the best sites, aim for 3 to 6 months ahead, but last-minute trips are still very doable. Illinois state parks like Ferne Clyffe, Dixon Springs, and Giant City take reservations up to six months in advance through the state's Camp IL system, and prime October weekends fill quickly. Shawnee National Forest's Forest Service campgrounds, including Oak Point at Lake Glendale and Camp Cadiz, are first-come, first-served, so arriving Thursday afternoon is the move. Private parks near Vienna take online bookings year-round. Pro tip: midweek nights almost anywhere in Union County are wide open, even in peak fall, so a Sunday-through-Thursday RV camping Anna trip gives you the pick of the lots.
camp.exploremoreil.com/What are the driving conditions like around Anna and the Shawnee Hills?
Driving here is genuinely pleasant for an RV. Anna sits near the intersection of US-51 (north-south) and IL-146 (east-west), both wide two-lane highways with light traffic. I-57 is about 20 minutes east and gives you four-lane access to St. Louis or Chicago. Inside Shawnee National Forest, paved forest roads to Garden of the Gods and Lake Glendale are RV-friendly, but a few spurs (Jackson Falls, Bell Smith Springs) turn to gravel and aren't ideal for big Class A rigs. Watch for deer at dawn and dusk in Union County, and slow down on IL-146's curves through the river hills. Pro tip: check IDOT's Getting Around Illinois map before storms, spring downpours occasionally close low-lying sections near the Cache River.
gettingaroundillinois.com/Where can I dump tanks and fill fresh water near Anna?
You've got solid options within a short drive. Oak Point Campground at Lake Glendale Recreation Area has a public dump station and potable water fill inside Shawnee National Forest, about 1 hour east of Anna. Dixon Springs State Park also has a dump station for registered campers. Private RV parks near Vienna typically offer full hookups at every site, so you can dump and fill right at your pad. Most Shawnee campgrounds provide drinking water spigots seasonally from April through mid-December. Pro tip: top off fresh water in Anna before heading into the forest, several primitive sites near Garden of the Gods have no potable water on site, only vault toilets.
fs.usda.gov/recarea/shawnee/recarea/?recid=10656What's actually inside an RV rental in Anna?
More than you'd expect. Most RVezy rentals in Anna come fully equipped: queen or king beds, convertible dinettes, a full kitchen with fridge, freezer, stove, microwave, and sink, an indoor bathroom with shower and toilet, air conditioning, furnace, and seatbelts for every passenger. Class C motorhomes typically sleep 4 to 7, Class A's sleep 6 to 8, and travel trailers range from cozy 2-person teardrops to family bunkhouses sleeping 10. Many include a TV, onboard generator, and outdoor speakers, and some hosts add Starlink or campground WiFi boosters. Pro tip: motorhome rental Anna listings often include a starter kit (linens, dishes, camp chairs) for a small fee, saving you from packing the kitchen sink from home.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Anna,%20IllinoisWhat add-ons and options can I get with my Anna RV rental?
Hosts in Anna offer plenty of extras to make your trip easier. Common add-ons include delivery and setup, generator hours, bike racks, kayaks, outdoor grills, fire-pit kits, bedding and towel packages, camp chairs, and pet cleaning fees if you're traveling with a dog. Pickup is usually at the host's home in Anna, Jonesboro, or nearby Union County towns, and most hosts offer a flexible 1 to 3 hour window. Mileage policies vary, expect 100 to 150 free miles per day with a per-mile rate after that, or look for unlimited-mileage listings for longer trips. Pro tip: filter for Instant Book on RVezy if you're booking inside a week, you'll lock in your campervan rental Anna without waiting for host approval.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Anna,%20IllinoisHow do payment and the security deposit work on RVezy?
Payment is simple and secure: you pay through the RVezy platform with a credit or debit card at the time of booking, never cash to the host. A refundable security deposit is held separately from your booking payment (typically a few hundred to around fifteen hundred dollars depending on the RV) and released after your trip once the host confirms the rig came back in good shape. The price you see at checkout is the price you pay, plus any optional add-ons or extra mileage you use. Pro tip: do a quick video walk-around with your host at pickup and drop-off and save it to your phone, it's the easiest way to keep your deposit refund smooth and stress-free.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360038106214-How-the-security-deposit-worksWhat are the best road trips I can take from Anna?
Anna is a launch pad for some of the Midwest's best RV adventures. Top picks: Garden of the Gods and the Shawnee Hills Wine Trail loop (about 1 hour east, weekend-perfect); Cape Girardeau and the Missouri Great River Road (about 35 minutes west, follow the Mississippi for views and riverfront wineries); Land Between the Lakes National Recreation Area in Kentucky (about 2 hours southeast, huge lakes and elk and bison prairie); Mammoth Cave National Park, KY (about 4 hours, world's longest known cave system); and St. Louis via I-57 and I-64 (about 2 hours, easy big-city detour with the Gateway Arch). Pro tip: a 5-day loop of Anna, Garden of the Gods, Land Between the Lakes, and back via Paducah is the quintessential southern Illinois RV trip and easy on a first-timer's nerves.
