Campgrounds and RV parks near Benton, IL

Rend Lake anchors most trip planning. The reservoir provides fishing for crappie, largemouth bass, channel catfish, and bluegill, with crappie action peaking in spring. Boating, swimming beaches, and shoreline bank fishing are all accessible from the park. At Wayne Fitzgerrell State Recreation Area, a 4-mile multi-use trail connects day-use areas through the campgrounds to Rend Lake Resort, and wildlife viewing includes bald eagles, herons, hawks, and deer throughout the property. The recreation area hosts sporting dog field trial events and controlled pheasant hunts in season. Day trips are easy from a Benton base. Shawnee National Forest and the Garden of the Gods recreation area sit south of town, and the Southern Illinois wine and antique trails run through nearby communities. Golfers can play the courses at Rend Lake Golf Course.

Southern Illinois has a humid continental climate with a long, warm shoulder season on either side of a hot, sticky summer. Late April through early June is generally the best window for RV travel: comfortable daytime temperatures, active fishing as crappie spawn on Rend Lake, and greened-up woodlands. September and October bring cooler nights, lower humidity, and reliable weather for hiking in the Shawnee. Summer runs hot and muggy. July is the hottest month, with an average high near 88°F and an average low near 68°F, and humidity peaks in July and August. Afternoon thunderstorms are common and can push through quickly. Winters are cold but not extreme. January averages a high near 40°F and a low near 24°F, and freezing nights are common from December through February. Some private campgrounds run reduced services in winter, and the resort at Wayne Fitzgerrell is closed until further notice, though the campground remains operational.

Most sites near Benton are level and paved or gravel, with picnic tables and fire rings standard. At Wayne Fitzgerrell, all 243 sites carry electric hookups and three shower buildings serve the campground, though some pads run uneven, so checking the site before setting up is worth the extra minute. There are no water hookups at individual sites, but a dump station is on the property. Benton KOA Journey is big-rig friendly with long pull-throughs, full hookups, cable TV, Wi-Fi, and a seasonal pool. T-Mobile data service can be slow in the state-park area. Expect deer, insects, and warm, humid summer nights. Bring bug spray from May through September.
