Campgrounds near Breese, Illinois
Breese sits in Clinton County in southwestern Illinois, a short drive from Carlyle Lake, the largest man-made lake in the state. The area gives RV renters access to state-run recreation lands, small private parks, and quiet rural sites within roughly an hour of the St. Louis metro.
Eldon Hazlet State Recreational Area is the closest major campground, positioned on the west shore of Carlyle Lake with hundreds of sites and full lake access. To the south, Washington County State Recreation Area near Nashville, Illinois has separate loops for different camping styles: Shady Rest - Washington County State Recreation Area handles RVs with electric hookups, while Lonely Oaks - Washington County State Recreation Area serves tent campers without hookups. Both parks are managed by the Illinois Department of Natural Resources.
Smaller options round out the mix. American Legion Freedom Farm offers a rural stopover, and Cedarbrook Campground provides a private-park alternative for travelers who want simpler check-in and hookup service without a state-park reservation.
Things to do near Breese
Carlyle Lake is the dominant draw. The reservoir supports boating, sailing, and shoreline fishing for crappie, largemouth bass, channel catfish, white bass, and bluegill. Eldon Hazlet State Recreational Area has more than nine miles of hiking trails, a public swimming pool near the campground store, and boat access on the west shore.
At Washington County State Recreation Area, a roughly seven-mile trail circles the lake and connects the campground areas. The lake allows non-motorized boats and small motors up to 10 horsepower, which makes it a calmer paddling and fishing option than Carlyle.
Off the water, day trips reach Kaskaskia River bottomlands, small-town main streets in Breese and Carlyle, and the Gateway Arch and St. Louis attractions about an hour west.

Peak camping season runs from Memorial Day through Labor Day. Weekends at Eldon Hazlet fill quickly, especially the electric loops closest to the lake, and holiday weekends often book out as soon as the reservation window opens. Summer brings warm, humid days and frequent afternoon thunderstorms, so shaded sites and working air conditioning matter.
Spring and fall are the sweet spots for RV renters who want space. April through mid-May delivers mild days and wildflowers but also one of the region's wettest stretches, with muddy ground possible in tent loops. September and October cool off, crowds thin, and fall color shows along the lake edges and oak-hickory ridges.
Washington County State Recreation Area is listed as open year-round, with reduced services in the cold months and a self-serve payment station off-season. Eldon Hazlet reduces amenities outside the main season, and some loops and shower buildings close. Confirm loop status directly with each park before booking a cold-weather trip.
How to book a site
Illinois state park campgrounds, including Eldon Hazlet State Recreational Area, Shady Rest - Washington County State Recreation Area, and Lonely Oaks - Washington County State Recreation Area, use the ExploreMoreIL reservation system operated by the Illinois Department of Natural Resources. Bookings open up to 180 days ahead of arrival and must be made at least three days before the check-in date. Walk-ins depend on unclaimed first-come sites at each park.
For holiday weekends and summer Fridays and Saturdays, book as early as the 180-day window allows. Private options such as American Legion Freedom Farm and Cedarbrook Campground handle their own bookings directly. Ask about rig length, hookup amperage, and slide-out clearance before confirming.
What to expect on-site
State park loops in this area are wooded and generally level. Shady Rest - Washington County State Recreation Area has electric sites, a shower building, and a dump station and potable water fill at the campground entrance. Lonely Oaks - Washington County State Recreation Area is a tent-oriented loop without hookups. Eldon Hazlet offers 328 Class A sites with 30 and 50 amp hookups, tent areas, a campground store, and a public swimming pool.
Cell service in the rural stretches south and east of Breese can be spotty, and some state parks accept only cash or check for on-site payments outside of online reservations. Expect mosquitoes and ticks from late spring through early fall. Buy firewood locally to avoid moving pests across county lines.

The host levels the RV, hooks up water and electric, walks you through every system, and hands you the keys, with no towing or backing into a tight site required. Use the Delivery filter on RVezy to see hosts offering this service, and message them for a delivery quote (most charge per mile from their location). It is a great choice for first-timers and families.

All four are prime RV camping Breese options, and reservations are highly recommended on summer weekends.
recreation.gov/camping/gateways/2475When is the best time of year to rent an RV in Breese, IL?
Late April through mid-October is prime time for a Breese RV trip. Spring (April to May) brings highs in the 60s to 70s F with wildflowers around Carlyle Lake, summer (June to August) runs warm and humid with highs in the mid-80s to low 90s and is peak boating and swimming season, and fall (September to October) cools beautifully into the 70s with stunning foliage along the Kaskaskia River. Winters dip into the 30s with occasional snow, so most campgrounds close from November through March. Insider tip: early September is the local sweet spot, the lake is still warm, crowds thin out after Labor Day, and rental rates often drop.
weather.gov/lsx/I've never rented an RV before, how does the pickup actually work?
First time renting an RV? You are in great hands. Every RVezy host gives you a hands-on walkthrough at pickup, usually 30 to 60 minutes, covering how to operate the generator, slide-outs, water system, propane, awning, and dump valves. You will get their direct phone number, and many hosts in the Breese area also send a video reference guide. If you would rather skip the driving entirely, book a host who offers delivery and they will set everything up at your campsite. Arrive at pickup with your phone charged and take short videos of the walkthrough, it is the easiest way to remember which switch does what when you are parked lakeside at Carlyle.

Every RV rental in Breese, IL booked through RVezy includes 24/7 roadside assistance as part of the protection plan, covering common issues like flat tires, dead batteries, lockouts, and towing. Your host is also a phone call or message away and usually knows their RV inside out, so a quick text can sort small questions fast. If something bigger happens, RVezy's support team is available around the clock to coordinate next steps. Cell service is strong throughout Clinton County and along I-64, but it can get patchy in the wooded sections of Eldon Hazlet State Park, so screenshot your host's number before you head out.

Popular routes include St. Louis and the Gateway Arch (about 50 miles, roughly 1 hour west on I-64), Shawnee National Forest with Garden of the Gods (about 150 miles, 2.5 hours south), Springfield and Lincoln's historic sites (about 90 miles, 1.5 hours north), Mark Twain National Forest in Missouri (about 130 miles southwest), and Nashville, TN (about 280 miles southeast for a long weekend). Class C motorhomes around Breese average 8 to 10 MPG, Class A coaches get 6 to 8 MPG, campervans (Class B) often hit 16 to 20 MPG, and pickup trucks towing travel trailers land around 10 to 12 MPG. Gas in Clinton County tends to run a few cents cheaper than the Illinois state average, with stations in Breese, Carlyle, and along I-64 at Aviston offering competitive prices. For a weekend at Carlyle Lake (under 100 miles total), budget $40 to $80 in fuel. Pro tip: fill up in Breese before heading to the lake, prices near the campgrounds tick up.
eia.gov/petroleum/gasdiesel/How far in advance should I book a campground near Breese?
For Carlyle Lake campgrounds, sooner is better. US Army Corps of Engineers sites (Dam West, Dam East, Coles Creek, McNair) book through Recreation.gov and open reservations 6 months in advance, with summer holiday weekends filling within hours of release. Illinois state park sites at Eldon Hazlet and South Shore book through Reserve America's Illinois DNR portal, also 6 months out. For a typical summer weekend, aim to book 8 to 12 weeks ahead, and for Memorial Day, Fourth of July, or Labor Day, book the day reservations open. Insider tip: midweek sites are often wide open even in July, perfect if your schedule is flexible.
recreation.gov/camping/gateways/2475What are driving conditions like in and around Breese, IL?
Driving an RV around Breese is genuinely easy, the terrain is flat farmland with wide rural roads and minimal traffic. I-64 runs just 6 miles south of Breese and connects you east to Indiana or west to St. Louis in under an hour, and US Route 50 passes right through town. There are no mountain grades, tunnels, or low clearances to worry about locally. Watch for farm equipment on county roads in spring and fall, and summer thunderstorms can pop up fast, so check the National Weather Service Lincoln/St. Louis forecast before driving. Local tip: avoid the Poplar Street Bridge approach into downtown St. Louis at rush hour if you're in a big rig, take I-255 around the city instead.

Most sites at Eldon Hazlet State Park, Dam West, and Coles Creek offer 30 or 50-amp electric hookups, with many full-hookup sites including water and sewer. You'll find hot showers, flush toilets, laundry facilities at the larger parks, a marina with fuel and supplies at Dam West, and swim beaches at Coles Creek and South Shore. Pro tip: bring a 25-foot drinking-water hose and a 30-to-50 amp adapter, both cover almost every hookup configuration at the lake.

Larger Class A and Class C motorhomes often include a generator, TV, outdoor speakers, and a second sleeping area for kids. Campervans (Class B) trade space for nimbleness and are easier to park around Carlyle Lake's smaller back-in sites. Many hosts also include camp chairs, a starter kit of dishes, and bedding. Check the listing's amenities list, or message the host to confirm extras like a Wi-Fi hotspot or bike rack.

You can customize your trip with helpful extras. Common RVezy add-ons in the Breese area include delivery and setup (often $2 to $4 per mile from the host), generator use (around $3 to $5 per hour for Class A coaches), camping chairs and tables (free to $25 per trip), linens and kitchen kits ($25 to $75), bike racks, and portable grills. Pickup is usually 1 to 3 PM and dropoff by 11 AM, though hosts often flex if asked early. Mileage policies vary by listing, so check the daily allowance before booking. Pro tip: ask your host about a propane top-off and pre-stocked fresh water tank, two small touches that make day one of your trip smoother.
enjoyillinois.com/plan-your-trip/places-to-stay/camping-and-rv-parks-in-illinois/How does payment and the security deposit work on RVezy?
Payment is simple and secure. You pay through the RVezy platform with a credit or debit card, never directly to the host, and your trip total (rental, protection plan, fees, and any add-ons) is shown clearly before you confirm. A refundable security deposit is held separately on your card before pickup and released after dropoff once the host confirms everything is in good shape. To avoid hiccups, take a quick walkaround video at pickup and dropoff, return the RV at the agreed fuel and tank levels, and stay within the mileage allowance, or pay the per-mile rate listed. Easy in, easy out.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360038106214-How-the-security-deposit-worksCan I take my Breese RV rental across state lines or into Canada?
Yes, interstate travel is welcome on RVezy rentals. From Breese you can freely drive into Missouri (50 miles to St. Louis), Indiana, Kentucky, Tennessee, and beyond, with your protection plan staying in effect across all 50 US states. Canada trips may be allowed with host approval and confirmation that insurance extends north of the border, so message the host directly from the listing before booking if that is your plan. Travel into Mexico is not permitted on RVezy rentals because insurance coverage does not extend there. Popular multi-state routes from Breese include the Ozarks loop through Missouri and Arkansas, and the Bourbon Trail through Kentucky, both incredible RV road trips from Breese.
