Camping near Casey, Illinois
Casey sits in east-central Illinois just off Interstate 70, roughly halfway between Indianapolis and St. Louis. The town is best known for its collection of oversized roadside attractions, including several Guinness World Records for the largest wind chime, mailbox, rocking chair, and more, all concentrated within a few blocks of downtown. For RV travelers, this makes Casey an easy overnight stop or a weekend basecamp with plenty of quirky things to photograph.
Most camping options fall within a 30-minute drive. Casey KOA sits just off I-70 exit 129 and works well for travelers who want full hookups and quick highway access. State parks to the north and south, including Fox Ridge State Park near Charleston and Lincoln Trail State Park south of Marshall, offer wooded sites with electric hookups on lakes and rivers.
Clark County's Mill Creek Park adds a large county-run option northwest of Marshall with lake access and a big campground loop, and Hickory Holler Campground rounds out the private choices in the area. Together they cover most trip styles, from quick pass-throughs to longer stays focused on fishing, hiking, and small-town sightseeing.
Things to do around Casey
Downtown Casey is the main draw. The oversized attractions are within a three-to-five-block area, so most families can see them on foot in an hour or two, then browse local shops, bakeries, and diners. Richards Farm Restaurant, set in a restored barn, is a popular sit-down stop and home to the World's Largest Pitchfork.
Outdoor activity clusters at the nearby state and county parks. Fox Ridge State Park has about eight miles of connecting hiking trails through wooded ridges and ravines above the Embarras River, with wooden bridges and the Eagles Nest Overlook. Lincoln Trail State Park centers on a 146-acre lake with boat rentals, fishing for bass, bluegill, and catfish, and a park restaurant. Mill Creek Park offers lake fishing, designated ATV trails outside the campground, and shoreline docks. Lincoln Log Cabin State Historic Site, a working living-history farm, is a short drive northwest.

Casey has four distinct seasons. Winters are cold with regular freezes and occasional snow, and most public campgrounds either close or run without water. Illinois state park shower buildings at Fox Ridge and Lincoln Trail typically close by November 1 and reopen around May 1, weather depending. Mill Creek Park's camping season runs April 1 through October 31 and can shift slightly with the weather. Casey KOA generally operates from March 1 through October 31.
Spring brings wildflowers and green-up along the wooded ridges but also the wettest stretch of the year, with April recording the most rain days. Expect soft ground and occasional standing water at low-lying sites. Summer is warm and humid, with July highs averaging in the low 80s and the highest campground demand around holiday weekends and the Casey Popcorn Festival on Labor Day weekend.
Fall is the most comfortable window for RV travel, with cooler nights, drier air, and strong color in the hardwoods through October.
How to book campgrounds near Casey
Illinois state parks use a single reservation system, ExploreMoreIL, for camping at Fox Ridge State Park and the Lakeside loop at Lincoln Trail State Park. All campers must obtain a permit before entering the campground. Fox Ridge keeps a mix of reservable and first-come, first-served sites, with sites 20-32 typically walk-up, so mid-week arrivals often find availability outside of peak weekends.
Mill Creek Park is booked directly through the Clark County Park District, either online, by phone with the park office or gatehouse, or in person on arrival. Advance deposits, a credit card on file, and a signed lease at check-in are standard. Casey KOA and Hickory Holler Campground handle their own reservations directly.
For summer weekends, holidays, and the Popcorn Festival on Labor Day weekend, book several weeks ahead. Larger rigs should confirm site length before booking, especially in the Lakeside loop at Lincoln Trail, where turns can be tight.
What to expect on the ground
Casey KOA is a KOA Journey park with 78 sites, pull-thrus up to 70 feet, full and electric-water hookups on 30/50 amp, a seasonal pool from Memorial Day through Labor Day, a small fishing lake, and a game room. It sits a quarter mile north of I-70, so some highway noise is normal.
Fox Ridge State Park has 43 mostly back-in sites with electric on gravel pads, shared water spigots throughout the loops, a shower building, and a dump station. Lincoln Trail's Lakeside loop has electric Class A sites plus a Class C tent area, with pit toilets in the loop and the main bathhouse in the neighboring Plainview loop. Mill Creek Park has 139 electric sites with crushed-stone pads, shared water stations, showers, and a playground, plus ten primitive walk-in sites nearby.
Cell signal is spotty inside the state parks. Groceries and fuel are easiest in Casey or Marshall.
