Campgrounds and RV parks near Central City, IL

Central City sits in Marion County in south-central Illinois, roughly 60 miles east of St. Louis and within driving distance of Carlyle Lake, the largest manmade lake in the state. RV travelers use the town as a base for lake camping, fishing, and quiet rural stays, with a mix of private RV parks and state-run campgrounds nearby. The closest options include UcamP Express RV Park in nearby Salem and Archway RV Park in Mount Vernon, both aimed at travelers who want full hookups off Interstate 57. For lake-oriented camping, Eldon Hazlet State Recreational Area is a 3,000-acre site on the west shore of Carlyle Lake, located 3 miles north of Carlyle and 2 miles east of Illinois Route 127 in Clinton County. South of Central City, Washington County State Recreation Area near Nashville, Illinois offers two campgrounds used by RV renters: Shady Rest for electric-hookup sites and Lonely Oaks for non-electric tent camping. The mix lets travelers choose between developed RV loops and quieter tent-style loops within the same park.

Illinois state park sites are booked through the state's ExploreMoreIL reservation system. Reservations can be made up to 180 days in advance of the arrival date and must be booked at least three days ahead, with a maximum stay of 14 nights within any 30-day period. A non-refundable reservation fee applies to each site. Both Eldon Hazlet and Washington County State Recreation Area (Shady Rest and Lonely Oaks) use this same system, and Memorial Day, Labor Day, and Fourth of July holiday weekends typically require a two-night minimum. Eldon Hazlet also keeps a large first-come, first-served section. Camp hosts patrol the loops to register walk-up campers and collect fees. Private parks like UcamP Express RV Park and Archway RV Park take direct bookings through their own websites or by phone, and generally hold more flexible cancellation terms than the state system.
