Overview of campgrounds near Columbia, Illinois
Columbia sits in Monroe County along the Mississippi River bluffs, roughly 20 minutes south of downtown St. Louis by way of Interstate 255. The location makes it a practical base for RV travelers who want quick access to a major metro area while sleeping outside the city core. The Mississippi River region surrounding Columbia features a mix of urban-adjacent and rural camping options within a 30-minute drive, with state parks and Army Corps of Engineers campgrounds dominating the public camping landscape and RV-focused parks clustering near the metropolitan St. Louis area.
Options closest to Columbia include Cahokia RV Parque, DraftKings at Casino Queen RV Park, Covered Bridge RV Park and Storage, Safari RV Park, and Belleville Mobile Home and RV Estates. These lean toward full-hookup, pull-through style parks rather than primitive tent sites, which suits travelers arriving in a rental motorhome or trailer.
Shade availability differs between established state parks with mature trees and newer RV parks with limited natural cover, so families with kids and pets should check site photos before booking a summer stay.
Things to do near Columbia
The signature regional attraction is Cahokia Mounds State Historic Site, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and National Historic Landmark where tens of thousands of Mississippian people once lived. Visitors can walk the grounds and climb Monks Mound's steps, and the interpretive center museum reopened in 2026 after a multi-year renovation, with limited hours Wednesdays through Sundays.
Across the river, downtown St. Louis puts Gateway Arch National Park, the Saint Louis Zoo in Forest Park, the City Museum, and the Anheuser-Busch brewery within a short drive. Pere Marquette State Park sits about 50 miles from Columbia near Grafton on the Great River Road Scenic Byway and offers hiking trails with scenic views of the Illinois River bluffs.
Closer to town, families can bike the Monroe County bluff roads, visit local wineries, and fish the backwaters along the Mississippi.

The most popular window for camping near Columbia is summer, June through August, though fall brings fewer people and fewer bugs. Summer is hot and humid on the Mississippi floodplain, with afternoon thunderstorms common; expect high dew points and biting insects along river bottoms. Sites with electric hookups are strongly preferred so the RV air conditioner can run overnight.
Spring is the wettest stretch, when Mississippi and Missouri River flooding occasionally affects low-lying access roads and riverside parks. Fall delivers the most reliable weather: cool nights, dry days, and turning hardwoods along the bluff country. It is also a good window for visiting Cahokia Mounds and the Great River Road without heat stress.
Winter is cold and quiet. Some private RV parks in the Columbia and East St. Louis area stay open year-round for full-hookup stays, while nearby state park campgrounds run limited service or close entirely. Cold-season river drives can also produce bald eagle sightings along the Mississippi and Illinois River bottoms.
How to book RV sites near Columbia
Private RV parks around Columbia and the Illinois side of St. Louis typically take reservations directly through their own websites or by phone. Cahokia RV Parque, Covered Bridge RV Park and Storage, Safari RV Park, and Belleville Mobile Home and RV Estates all fit this pattern. DraftKings at Casino Queen RV Park is attached to the casino property in East St. Louis and books through the casino's reservation desk.
Illinois state park campgrounds within day-trip range use the state's ExploreMoreIL portal, with sites released on a rolling window up to six months ahead of arrival. Missouri state parks across the river use their own separate system. Army Corps of Engineers and federal sites use Recreation.gov.
Book early during peak seasons in spring and fall, as campgrounds can fill quickly on weekends tied to Cardinals home games, Blues home games, or major festivals in St. Louis.
What to expect on the ground
Expect flat, gravel or paved pull-through sites at most of the private parks near Columbia, with 30 and 50 amp electric, water, and sewer at the majority of RV spots. Cell coverage is strong across the region thanks to proximity to St. Louis, and grocery, fuel, and propane are easy to reach along Route 3 and Interstate 255.
Road access is straightforward for larger rigs: Interstate 255 loops the metro area, and Illinois Route 3 runs directly through Columbia. Bridge routes into Missouri handle standard motorhomes and trailers without low-clearance concerns on the main crossings.
Urban noise levels decrease at campgrounds farther from the St. Louis metropolitan area, so families sensitive to highway or train noise should compare Columbia-area parks with quieter options farther south in Monroe County. Summer humidity, mosquitoes, and the chance of severe thunderstorms are the main weather considerations to plan around.

Fuel is usually the biggest variable on a Columbia, IL RV trip, so a little planning goes a long way. Expect roughly 8-10 MPG for a Class C motorhome, 6-8 MPG for a Class A, and 12-18 MPG for a truck towing a travel trailer or for a campervan. Illinois gas prices tend to run slightly higher than just across the river in Missouri, so many locals top off in Dupo or Waterloo before heading out, or fill up in Arnold, MO if heading south. For a weekend run to Shawnee National Forest (about 300 miles round trip), budget roughly $120-$180 in fuel for a midsize Class C.

Private parks like Cahokia RV Parque take direct reservations and tend to book 2-4 weeks ahead in summer. Pro tip: lock in your campground first, then book your RV rental in Columbia, IL to match those dates, it's the smoothest way to plan.

Driving an RV around Columbia is refreshingly manageable. Route 3 and Interstate 255 are flat, wide, and RV-friendly, making it easy to reach St. Louis, Waterloo, or the Mississippi River bluffs without stress. The main things to watch: avoid downtown St. Louis surface streets and the low clearances near the Arch (some are under 11 feet), and be ready for sudden Midwest thunderstorms in spring and summer, which can bring strong crosswinds along the river. Snow and ice are possible from December through February, so check forecasts before winter trips. Pro tip: if city driving makes you nervous, book a host who offers RV delivery in Columbia and skip the metro traffic entirely.

rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Columbia%2C%20IllinoisHow does payment and the security deposit work on an RVezy booking?
Payment is simple and all handled through RVezy, never in cash with the host. You will pay your rental total by credit or debit card at booking, and a refundable security deposit is pre-authorized on your card shortly before pickup. The hold is released after your trip ends, assuming the RV comes back in the same condition. To avoid issues, do a thorough walk-around with the host at pickup and return, take photos or a quick video of the interior and exterior, top off fuel and propane as the contract states, and dump the tanks if required. That simple checklist is the difference between a smooth return and an avoidable charge.
