Campgrounds near Creal Springs, Illinois
Creal Springs sits in southern Illinois within the Shawnee National Forest region, the state's only national forest, which spans roughly 289,000 acres between the Ohio and Mississippi rivers. The village is a practical base for RV travelers headed to Lake of Egypt, Ferne Clyffe State Park, and the rock formations of the Shawnee Hills. Interstate 24 and Interstate 57 both run within a short drive, making arrivals from St. Louis and points north straightforward.
Campground options nearby cover the full range. Cedar Lake Campground and Marion Campground and RV Park serve travelers who want full hookups and easy interstate access. Deer Ridge - Ferne Clyffe State Park offers gravel pads with electricity, showers, and a dump station, while Horse Camp - Ferne Clyffe State Park accommodates equestrian rigs. Shawnee Forest Campground provides RV sites with water, sewer, and electric.
The area draws hikers, climbers, anglers, boaters, and equestrians, and most sites are within a 20 to 40 minute drive of the main trailheads and lakes.
Things to do near Creal Springs
Ferne Clyffe State Park covers 2,430 acres and holds eighteen trails, a 100-foot intermittent waterfall on Big Rocky Hollow, the Hawks' Cave shelter bluff, and up to 150 sport-climbing routes across Cedar Bluff, Rebman Trail, and Boat Rock. Ferne Clyffe Lake is a 16-acre lake open to bank fishing for largemouth bass, bluegill, channel catfish, and redear; boats and swimming are not permitted.
Lake of Egypt sits just west of Creal Springs and offers a long wooded shoreline for boating, fishing, and paddling. The Shawnee Wine Trail, Garden of the Gods, Bell Smith Springs, and the Tunnel Hill State Trail are all within roughly an hour's drive.
Families traveling with kids often build a trip around a mix of short hikes, lake time, and picnic stops at the seven picnic areas inside Ferne Clyffe, several of which have shelters and playground equipment.

Spring and fall are the most popular times to camp near Creal Springs. Spring brings wildflowers, running waterfalls at Ferne Clyffe, and comfortable trail temperatures, though it is the wettest stretch of the year and creek crossings can run high. Fall delivers the region's best color across the oak-hickory forest, along with cooler nights well suited to campfires.
Summer is hot and humid, with July and August average highs in the mid-80s and roughly seven days per month above 90 degrees F at the Marion climate station. Lake of Egypt is at its peak for boating and swimming. Biting insects and afternoon thunderstorms are common.
Winter is cold and quiet. Shawnee National Forest campgrounds are usually open April 1 through December, and Ferne Clyffe State Park switches to first-come, first-served on November 1 with no online reservations accepted during the off-season. Several private RV parks in the area operate year round.
How to book campgrounds near Creal Springs
Illinois state parks use the ExploreMoreIL reservation system. Reservable sites at Deer Ridge in Ferne Clyffe State Park can be booked up to 180 days in advance and no less than three days out. Turkey Ridge and Youth Group sites are first-come, first-served, and the equestrian Horse Camp accepts advance reservations by phone at the park office but does not require them.
Shawnee National Forest campgrounds are first-come, first-served with no reservation system, with self-pay stations at each campground entrance. Plan to arrive earlier on Friday afternoons in peak season. Private options such as Marion Campground and RV Park, Cedar Lake Campground, and Shawnee Forest Campground take reservations directly through their own websites.
Stays are limited to fourteen consecutive nights at any one Illinois state park between May 1 and September 30.
What to expect on arrival
Roads into Ferne Clyffe are paved and RV-accessible from I-57 exit 40 or I-24 exit 7. Deer Ridge sites are gravel pads with electricity, picnic tables, grills, drinking water, showers, flush toilets, and a dump station. Cell coverage is uneven in the more remote hollows of the Shawnee Hills; download maps before losing signal.
Ferne Clyffe does not charge an entrance fee, and pets are allowed on leash. Bank fishing at Ferne Clyffe Lake requires a valid Illinois fishing license. Boating and swimming are prohibited on that lake.
After November 1, payment at Ferne Clyffe is deposited in an honor kiosk near the dump station, and only cash and checks are accepted at Shawnee National Forest self-pay stations. Groceries, fuel, and supplies are easiest to pick up in Marion or Goreville before heading to a site.

You can also message your host beforehand with any question, no matter how small. Pro tip: do a quick loop around the campground after your walkthrough so the steering and braking feel familiar before you hit Highway 24.
fs.usda.gov/recarea/shawnee/recreation/camping-cabinsWhat happens if something breaks down during my trip?
You're covered around the clock. Cell service is reliable in Creal Springs and Marion but can get spotty deep in Shawnee National Forest. help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailCan I take my Creal Springs RV rental on a longer road trip across state lines?

Regional gas prices in Williamson County tend to run a few cents below the Illinois state average, and you'll find convenient fill-ups at the Pilot Travel Center off I-57 Exit 53 in Marion, about 10 miles from Creal Springs. Pro tip: top off in Marion before heading into the Shawnee, where gas stations thin out quickly between Eddyville and Cave-in-Rock.
eia.gov/petroleum/gasdiesel/How far in advance should I book a campground near Creal Springs?
Plan ahead and you'll have your pick of the best sites. Illinois state park campgrounds like Ferne Clyffe and Giant City open reservations six months in advance through the Illinois DNR/Reserve America system, and fall weekends (especially mid-October foliage) and the weeks around eclipse anniversaries fill quickly. The Marion/Shawnee National Forest KOA in Creal Springs takes bookings up to 13 months out, and Shawnee National Forest sites like Pharaoh Campground are first-come, first-served. Pro tip: aim to reserve state park sites by April for an October trip, and use the RVezy Instant Book filter so your RV is locked in the same day you secure the site.
dnr.illinois.gov/parks/camping.htmlWhat are local driving conditions like around Creal Springs?
Driving an RV around Creal Springs is calmer than most metro areas, with very little traffic and wide rural roads. Interstate 57 and Interstate 24 just north and east of town offer smooth, flat travel for any size rig. The fun starts on the scenic byways: Illinois Route 145 toward Garden of the Gods has tight curves and rolling grades through the Shawnee Hills, and Karbers Ridge Road narrows in spots, so take it slow. Watch for deer at dawn and dusk year-round, and for ice on bridges in winter. Pro tip: avoid driving the forest roads after heavy summer thunderstorms, when fallen branches are common.
idot.illinois.gov/travel-information/road-conditions/index.htmlWhat hookups and amenities can I expect at campgrounds near Creal Springs?
You'll find a great mix. Marion/Shawnee National Forest KOA in Creal Springs offers full hookups (water, 50/30-amp electric, sewer), Wi-Fi, hot showers, laundry, and a dump station. Lake Glendale and Pharaoh Campground in Shawnee National Forest lean rustic with vault toilets and no hookups, perfect for boondocking. Potable water fills are easy to find at any state park entrance, and the Marion Pilot Travel Center has a public dump station. Pro tip: ask your host whether the RV has a built-in fresh water tank big enough for two nights off-grid before tackling Pharaoh.

Many include a generator for off-grid power, a TV, and built-in solar or Wi-Fi boosters that work well in Shawnee National Forest's spottier coverage zones. Travel trailers and fifth wheels often sleep 6-8, making them ideal for a family RV trip Creal Springs. fs.usda.gov/recarea/shawnee/recreationWhat add-ons and pickup options should I look for when I rent an RV in Creal Springs?

Popular choices include camp chair and table packages, linen and kitchen kits, portable grills, generators, bike racks, kayak racks (a must for Lake of Egypt), and propane fire pits. Many hosts also offer delivery to nearby campgrounds like Marion/Shawnee KOA or Ferne Clyffe State Park, with fees usually based on distance. Pickup is typically at the host's location in Marion, Carbondale, or Creal Springs itself. Mileage policies vary, with some offering 100-200 miles per day included and overages around $0.35-$0.50 per mile. Pro tip: bundle a generator add-on if you're heading to first-come, first-served sites at Pharaoh Campground.
fs.usda.gov/recarea/shawnee/recarea/?recid=10703How does payment and the security deposit work on RVezy?
Payment on RVezy is simple and secure. You'll pay your rental total through the platform when you book, never directly to the host, which keeps everything protected. A refundable security deposit is held on your card before the trip starts, typically $500 to $1,500 depending on the RV's value, and it's released after the host confirms the rig is returned in good shape. The protection plan you chose at checkout covers most accidental damage, so the deposit is rarely touched. Pro tip: take date-stamped photos and a quick video of the RV's interior and exterior at pickup and dropoff at your Creal Springs meeting point, an easy habit that prevents almost every deposit dispute.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360038106214-How-the-security-deposit-worksCan I use my RV rental in Creal Springs during winter?
Yes, winter RV trips around Creal Springs are absolutely doable and surprisingly peaceful. Southern Illinois winters are mild compared to most of the Midwest, with average highs in the 40s F in December and January and only occasional snow. Ferne Clyffe State Park keeps limited campsites open year-round, and the Marion/Shawnee National Forest KOA stays open with full hookups. Look for RVs listed with heated holding tanks, propane furnaces, and shore-power capability to stay comfortable on chilly nights. Pro tip: a winter visit to Garden of the Gods after a light dusting of snow is one of Southern Illinois' best-kept secrets, and trails stay open all year.
