Campgrounds and RV parks near Dahlgren, IL

Rend Lake is the main draw. The park provides excellent bank fishing for crappie, largemouth bass, channel catfish, and bluegill, and boat ramps, a marina, and swim beaches sit within a short drive of most campgrounds. On land, a 4-mile multi-use trail connects day-use areas through the campgrounds to Rend Lake Resort, and wildlife viewing opportunities include bald eagles, herons, hawks, and deer throughout the property. The 27-hole Rend Lake Golf Complex sits nearby. For day trips, the Shawnee National Forest lies roughly an hour south, with Garden of the Gods offering short cliff-top hikes. Wineries along the Shawnee Hills Wine Trail and antique shops in Benton round out rainy-day options.

Spring is the region's signature season. Crappie fishing peaks in April and May, and the state park loops fill quickly on weekends. Expect wet ground and occasional severe thunderstorms; April is typically the month with the most rainfall in the Mount Vernon area, with rain on nearly 15 days, and tornado watches are common across southern Illinois in spring. Summer runs hot and humid, with daytime highs averaging in the low to mid 80s from June through August and heat indices higher. Lake use, pool time, and shaded RV sites become priorities. Weekends around Memorial Day, Independence Day, and Labor Day are the tightest for reservations at Wayne Fitzgerrell State Recreation Area, and reservations for those holiday weekends require a two-night minimum. Fall brings cooler nights, lower humidity, and reliable weather for hiking and boating through mid-October. Controlled pheasant hunts run into winter at the state recreation area. Winter camping is possible but limited: Whittington Woods keeps full hookups with sewer, water, and electric available year round, while some state park loops and primitive areas reduce services.

Sites in this area lean rural and wooded. At Wayne Fitzgerrell, camping options include Class A sites with electric hookups for RVs and a primitive tent camping area, though the primitive area may close seasonally due to staffing. Sites are electric only with 20/30/50 amp service and nicely spaced, and three shower buildings serve the campground. Cell coverage varies by carrier. Whittington Woods leans toward the traveler market, with tall trees for shade, full hookups, and a refreshing pool, plus a small store selling propane. Benton KOA sits closest to I-57 for quick overnight stops, with cabins available in addition to RV pads. Bring bug spray from late spring through early fall, expect afternoon thunderstorms in summer, and plan for uneven pads at some state park sites. Leveling blocks are useful.
