RV camping near Dalzell, Illinois
Dalzell is a small village in Bureau County in north-central Illinois, positioned within easy reach of the Illinois River valley and the state's most-visited state park. RV travelers use it as a base for Starved Rock country, with the towns of Peru, LaSalle, and Utica just minutes east along Interstate 80.
Campground options in the immediate area lean toward private RV parks and state-park campgrounds. Starved Rock Family Campground and Nature's Way RV Park serve travelers wanting full hookups and easy highway access, while Starved Rock State Park's campground sits just outside the park off Route 71, and the Equestrian - Matthiessen State Park campground offers public sites closer to the canyons and bluffs. Pleasant Creek Campground provides another nearby private option.
The terrain here differs from the flat prairie farther south. Sandstone canyons, seasonal waterfalls, and river overlooks draw families, hikers, and paddlers through most of the year, with heaviest visitation from spring through fall foliage season.
Things to do near Dalzell
Hiking is the headline activity. Starved Rock State Park contains sandstone canyons with waterfalls that run strongest after snowmelt and heavy rain. Matthiessen State Park, just south, adds a compact canyon loop and an equestrian trail system used by riders staying at the Equestrian - Matthiessen State Park campground.
The Illinois River supports fishing, kayaking, and guided boat tours below Starved Rock Lock and Dam, where bald eagles gather in winter. The nearby I&M Canal State Trail offers flat, family-friendly cycling along a historic towpath.
Off-park attractions include the shops and restaurants in Utica, wineries in the surrounding countryside, and Peru's riverfront. Rain-day options include the Starved Rock Visitor Center, open daily 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., and the indoor waterpark resorts clustered along the I-80 corridor.

The camping season in north-central Illinois generally runs from mid-spring through late fall. Most private RV parks open in April and close in October or early November, while the Starved Rock campground is open year-round, though the east loop and youth group area are closed until April 1. Water systems at many sites are shut off once hard freezes arrive.
Spring brings the fullest waterfalls and moderate crowds, though trails can be muddy and river levels high. Summer is the busiest booking window, with warm, humid weather, frequent afternoon thunderstorms, and full campgrounds on weekends. Reserve well ahead for holiday weekends between Memorial Day and Labor Day.
Fall is a favorite for RV travelers. Cooler temperatures, lower humidity, and mid- to late-October foliage make weekend sites competitive. Winter visits are possible for the eagle-watching season, but expect limited services, closed shower buildings, and icy trails inside the canyons.
How to book near Dalzell
Illinois state park campgrounds, including Starved Rock State Park and the Equestrian - Matthiessen State Park campground, are reserved online through the ExploreMoreIL website, and IDNR no longer takes camping reservations through the mail or over the phone. Campsites can be reserved for a maximum of 14 nights within a 30-day period, and reservations must be made three days before the campsite is needed, with a rolling window of roughly six months in advance. Popular weekends often fill soon after opening.
Private campgrounds such as Starved Rock Family Campground, Nature's Way RV Park, and Pleasant Creek Campground take reservations directly through their own websites or by phone. Holiday and fall-color weekends should be booked several months in advance.
When renting an RV, confirm site length, hookup type, and after-hours arrival policies before locking in a reservation.
What to expect on arrival
Roads into the area are straightforward. Interstate 80 crosses the region east to west, with paved state highways connecting Dalzell to Utica, Oglesby, and the park entrances. Most private campgrounds sit on level ground with pull-through options, while state-park sites tend to be back-in and shaded by mature hardwoods.
Hookup availability varies. Expect a mix of full-hookup, electric-only, and non-electric sites across the area. At Starved Rock, water hydrants are located throughout the campground, porta potties and two shower houses with flush toilets are on site, and a dump station and trash containers sit at the campground entrance and exit, along with a playground and shelter. Cell service is generally reliable near the interstate and spottier inside the canyon areas.
Bring insect repellent from May through September, sturdy footwear for uneven canyon trails, and a leash for pets, which are permitted in most campgrounds but restricted on certain interior park trails.
