Campgrounds near Energy, Illinois
Energy sits in Williamson County in southern Illinois, minutes from Marion and roughly a 20-minute drive from Carbondale. The village serves as a practical base for RV travelers heading into Crab Orchard National Wildlife Refuge, a 44,000-acre area that provides a migration haven along the Mississippi Flyway, and the broader Shawnee National Forest, which covers roughly 280,000 acres across southern Illinois.
Campground options within a short drive cover most needs. Marion Campground and RV Park and EZ Camp - XXXL Storage serve travelers who want hookups close to town and interstate access. Four Seasons Campground is another nearby option for RV travelers staying in the Marion and Energy area.
For lake-focused stays, Blue Heron Marina and Campground sits on Crab Orchard Lake on the north side of the refuge, and Little Grassy Lake Campground and Marina lies farther south near Makanda. Both are within the refuge boundary and put boat ramps, fishing access, and refuge trails close to the RV site.
Things to do near Energy
Water recreation drives most trips. Crab Orchard Lake covers roughly 7,000 acres and offers two campgrounds, marinas, and several boat launching ramps, with fishing, hunting, picnic areas, and swimming all available. The refuge also holds a 4,050-acre congressionally designated wilderness area on its western side, plus a year-round wildlife drive where visitors commonly see white-tailed deer, turkey, waterfowl, and songbirds.
Hiking and sightseeing fill the rest of a trip. Giant City State Park sits a short drive south of Energy with sandstone bluffs and family-friendly trails. Farther east, the Shawnee National Forest holds Garden of the Gods, Rim Rock, and Bell Smith Springs. Wineries along the Shawnee Hills Wine Trail and the Tunnel Hill State Trail round out day-trip options.

Site conditions can be soft after heavy rain, and low-lying refuge roads occasionally flood.
Summer is hot and humid. Highs regularly reach the upper 80s, and afternoon thunderstorms are common. Lakefront sites at Blue Heron Marina and Campground fill quickly on weekends and holidays, so reserving well in advance is important.
Fall offers the most comfortable weather, cooler nights, and lighter crowds through late October. Winter camping is possible at year-round private parks in the Energy and Marion area, but many federal facilities reduce services or close seasonally. Crab Orchard Campground, on the northern side of the lake within the refuge, opens its season on April 1.

What to expect at Energy campgrounds
Sites near Energy range from full-hookup RV parks close to Interstate 57 to shaded lakeside pads inside the refuge. At Blue Heron Marina and Campground, the facility provides water and electric hookups (including 50-amp on some sites), a full-service shower house, and a dump station across 34 water and electric sites plus primitive tent camping. Campers report tight spacing between sites but clean facilities and a quiet, alcohol-free atmosphere.
At Little Grassy Lake Campground and Marina, sites are set in a forested area with lake views, and hookup configurations vary by loop. Call the operator to confirm current amenities and availability, since the surrounding lake has been affected by a drawdown project.

fws.gov/refuge/crab-orchardCan the RV be delivered to my campsite in Energy, IL?
Yes, and it's one of the smartest moves for a first-time renter. Many RVezy hosts offer RV delivery in Energy, IL and the surrounding Williamson County area, meaning they'll drive the rig to your campground, level it, hook up water and power, and walk you through every system before handing over the keys. Use the Delivery filter when searching, then message the host to confirm distance fees to your specific spot. Common drop-offs include Crab Orchard Campground, Lake Glendale Recreation Area, and Shawnee Forest Campground in Vienna. You show up, unpack the cooler, and start your vacation. No towing stress required.

From here, Garden of the Gods is a scenic 50-mile drive east, Cape Girardeau, Missouri sits about 75 miles southwest, Nashville, Tennessee is roughly 230 miles, and St. Louis is about 110 miles northwest via I-57 and I-64. rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Energy%2C%20ILWhere are the best campgrounds near Energy, IL?
You're spoiled for choice. Some of the best campgrounds near Energy, IL include Shawnee Forest Campground in Vienna (full-hookup sites just off I-24, about 35 miles southeast), Crab Orchard Campground at the National Wildlife Refuge in Marion (lakeside sites with electric hookups, roughly 8 miles east), Little Grassy Campground south of Carbondale (full-hookup RV sites with 50-amp service), Lake Glendale Recreation Area inside Shawnee National Forest (showers, dump station, electric), and Ferne Clyffe State Park near Goreville (waterfalls and rock formations a short walk from your site). Book lakeside sites 2 to 3 months ahead for summer weekends.
recreation.gov/camping/gateways/2725When is the best time of year for an Energy, IL RV trip?
Southern Illinois has a real four-season climate, and the sweet spots are spring and fall. From mid-April through early June, expect 60 to 80 F days, blooming dogwoods, and waterfalls running full at Burden Falls and Bell Smith Springs. Mid-September through early November is even better: 50 to 75 F, lower humidity, and Shawnee National Forest puts on one of the Midwest's most underrated fall color shows. Summers are hot and humid (highs of 85 to 95 F), while winters are mild compared to northern Illinois with daytime highs in the 40s. For RV camping in Energy, IL, October weekends fill fast, so book early.
weather.gov/pah/I've never rented an RV before. Will I actually figure it out?
Yes, and faster than you'd think. First time renting an RV in Energy is genuinely easy because every RVezy host meets you in person for a full walkthrough of water tanks, propane, slide-outs, the awning, the generator, dump valves, and how to hook up at camp. They'll answer questions, share photos of how things should look, and stay reachable by message for the whole trip. You can also message any host before booking to ask anything that's on your mind. Pair that with 24/7 roadside support and a beginner-friendly Class C motorhome rental in Energy, and you'll feel like a pro by night one at the campfire.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/categories/360002386013-For-RentersWhat happens if the RV breaks down during my trip?
You're never on your own. Every RV rental in Energy, IL booked through RVezy includes 24/7 roadside assistance as part of the renter protection plan, so a flat tire on Highway 148, a battery issue at Lake Glendale, or a lockout at Garden of the Gods is a quick phone call to fix. One number gets you a tow, jump-start, tire change, fuel delivery, or lockout service. Your host is also just a message away for quick questions (the AC remote is sneaky on most rigs). Save the roadside number to your phone before pickup and you can hit the road relaxed.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailCan I take my Energy, IL RV rental into Kentucky, Missouri, or other states?
Yes, interstate travel is one of the best parts of an RV road trip from Energy, IL. You're about 30 miles from the Kentucky line, 50 miles from Missouri, and a half-day drive from Tennessee, Indiana, and Arkansas. Confirm your travel route with your host when booking so they know your plan and the protection plan stays in effect. One important note: travel into Mexico is not permitted on RVezy rentals because insurance coverage doesn't extend there. Popular cross-border loops include the drive to Cape Girardeau, MO and the Land Between the Lakes route into western Kentucky and Tennessee.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039340074-Insurance-coverage-validityHow much should I budget for fuel on an Energy, IL RV trip?
Fuel is easier to budget than most people expect. Travel trailers don't burn extra fuel themselves, but towing them drops your truck's mileage to roughly 10 to 12 MPG. Class C motorhomes average 8 to 12 MPG, and Class A coaches around 7 to 10 MPG. Southern Illinois gas prices typically run near or slightly below the national average, with major fuel stops in Marion, Carbondale, and along I-57. For a 300-mile weekend loop through Shawnee National Forest in a Class C, plan on roughly $100 to $140 in gas. Pro tip: fill up in Marion before heading into the forest, stations get sparse east of I-57.
eia.gov/petroleum/gasdiesel/How far ahead should I book a campground near Energy, IL?
For peak summer weekends and October leaf-peeping, book 2 to 4 months in advance, Shawnee National Forest and Illinois State Park sites disappear quickly. Illinois State Park campgrounds (like Ferne Clyffe and Dixon Springs) reserve through the state's Camp Illinois system at ExploreMoreIL.com, while many U.S. Forest Service campgrounds in Shawnee book through Recreation.gov, with some sites first-come, first-served, so arrive Thursday for weekend spots. Midweek trips in May or September often have same-week openings. Pro tip: private parks like Shawnee Forest Campground in Vienna often have last-minute cancellations, call directly.
recreation.gov/camping/gateways/2725What's it like driving an RV around Energy, IL?
Easier than almost anywhere in the Midwest. Energy sits right off I-57 in flat-to-rolling southern Illinois, with wide rural highways like Route 13 and Route 148 that handle Class A motorhomes comfortably. Once you head into Shawnee National Forest, roads get narrower and twistier (Garden of the Gods Road and the route to Bell Smith Springs both have tight curves and limited turnarounds), so consider a travel trailer or Class C if you're a newer driver. Watch for deer at dawn and dusk, especially in fall, and check forecasts for summer thunderstorms. Otherwise, traffic is light and your biggest hazard is wanting to pull over for every roadside fruit stand.
idot.illinois.gov/travel-information/road-conditions.htmlWhat hookups and amenities will I find at campgrounds near Energy, IL?
You'll find a great mix. Full-hookup sites (water, sewer, 30/50-amp electric) are common at private parks like Shawnee Forest Campground in Vienna and Little Grassy near Crab Orchard. Most Illinois State Parks and U.S. Forest Service sites in Shawnee offer electric and water but not sewer at the site, however they have on-site dump stations and potable water fill-ups, and Lake Glendale Recreation Area has hot showers. Cell signal is solid near Marion and Energy, spottier deep in Shawnee. Pro tip: fill your fresh tank in Energy or Marion before heading to Garden of the Gods, then dump on your way back out.
recreation.gov/camping/gateways/2725What's inside a typical RV rental in Energy, IL?
More creature comforts than you'd expect. A typical Class C motorhome or travel trailer rental in Energy, IL sleeps 4 to 8 with real beds (queen master plus convertible dinette and bunks), a full kitchen with fridge, stove, microwave, and sink, a bathroom with shower and toilet, roof AC, propane furnace, and a dinette or sofa with seatbelts for travel. Many rentals include a TV, backup camera, outdoor speakers, or an onboard generator for boondocking. A campervan rental in Energy is a great choice for couples wanting easier handling. Check each listing's amenities tab to confirm WiFi hotspot, generator hours, and bedding before you book.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Energy%2C%20ILWhat add-ons and pickup options should I know about?
Hosts on RVezy in Energy, IL offer some genuinely useful add-ons: linens and towel packages ($30 to $75), kitchen kits, outdoor camp chairs, portable grills, generators, bike racks, and even kayaks for paddling Crab Orchard Lake. Delivery and setup is a popular option (fees vary by distance from the host), and some hosts offer one-way drop-offs to nearby cities, just message them to ask. Pickup and return times are set by each host and listed in the listing details, often pickup in the afternoon and return by late morning. Mileage policies are listed clearly on every listing, commonly 100 to 150 free miles per day with a small per-mile fee after.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Energy%2C%20ILHow does payment and the security deposit work on RVezy?
Payment is simple and secure, no envelopes of cash at pickup. When you book your RV rental in Energy, IL, you pay through the RVezy platform with a credit or debit card. A refundable security deposit is held separately from the booking payment (amount varies by RV and is shown at checkout) and released after the host confirms the RV came back in good shape, typically within a few days of return. To avoid issues, do a thorough walkthrough photo set at pickup, follow the mileage and generator limits in your listing, and dump the tanks before return if required. Easy in, easy out.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360038106214-How-the-security-deposit-worksCan I take a winter RV trip from Energy, IL?
Yes, and southern Illinois winters are surprisingly RV-friendly. Daytime highs in Energy average around 40 to 45 F in December and January, with only occasional snow, much milder than northern Illinois. Many RVezy hosts in the area offer rigs with heated holding tanks, enclosed underbellies, and propane furnaces that handle the chill just fine. Crab Orchard, Lake Glendale, and Ferne Clyffe stay open year-round with reduced services, and you'll often have trails like Garden of the Gods to yourself. Pro tip: ask your host about cold-weather prep (skirting, tank heaters, a space heater backup), and keep your fresh tank topped off in case water spigots are winterized.
