Campgrounds near Equality, Illinois
Equality sits in Gallatin County in southern Illinois, on the northeastern edge of the Shawnee National Forest. The town is a practical base for RV travelers heading to Garden of the Gods, the Ohio River bluffs, and the Saline River bottoms. Most campgrounds in the area are within a 30 to 45 minute drive.
Options range from private RV parks with full hookups to state park campgrounds with electric sites and primitive tent areas. Double M Campground and Bear Branch Campgrounds serve as closer-in bases for exploring the eastern Shawnee, while Riverview RV Park caters to travelers wanting a river-side stay. State park camping is available at Cave-in-rock State Park along the Ohio River and Dixon Springs State Park to the southwest.
The Shawnee National Forest covers roughly 280,000 acres of southern Illinois between the Ohio and Mississippi rivers, with sandstone bluffs, hardwood forest, and dispersed camping across the region. Cell service, fuel, and groceries thin out quickly outside the small towns, so plan resupply stops before heading into the forest.
Things to do near Equality
Garden of the Gods Recreation Area, with its Observation Trail through sandstone hoodoos, is the region's headline hike and sits a short drive south of Equality. Rim Rock, Pounds Hollow, and Tower Rock offer additional trail networks, swimming access, and overlooks within the Shawnee National Forest.
At Cave-in-rock State Park, a two-mile loop trail connects the campground to the lodge, follows the cliff face, and descends into the namesake 55-foot cavern on the Ohio River. Dixon Springs State Park adds a waterfall, a covered spring, and a seasonal swimming pool with a slide, plus the short Ghost Dance Canyon Trail.
Fishing, paddling, and pond swimming are common at both state parks. The Shawnee Hills Wine Trail runs through the forest to the west and pairs well with a slow driving day between campground stays.

Spring and fall are the most comfortable windows for RV travel in the Equality area. April through early June brings wildflowers, running waterfalls, and daytime highs in the 60s to upper 70s Fahrenheit, though April is typically the wettest month and forest roads can become soft. September and October bring hardwood color across the Shawnee Hills, cooler nights, and lighter rainfall.
Summers are long, hot, and humid, with July and August highs regularly near 88 to 89 Fahrenheit and roughly 12 to 13 days above 90 each month. Thunderstorms, ticks, and biting insects are all part of the season. Weekend sites at popular state parks book up well in advance from Memorial Day through Labor Day.
Winters are cold and wet rather than deeply snowy, with January highs near 42 Fahrenheit and around eight inches of annual snowfall. Some Shawnee National Forest campgrounds run on seasonal schedules rather than year round, so confirm dates before arrival.
How to book campgrounds near Equality
Illinois state park campsites, including Dixon Springs State Park and Cave-in-rock State Park, are reserved through the state's ExploreMoreIL system. Booking online is the most reliable path, and campers still need to obtain a permit from park personnel on arrival. Most Illinois state park sites can be reserved from May 1 through October 31, with a two-night minimum on Memorial Day, Independence Day, and Labor Day weekends, and each park also keeps some first-come, first-served sites.
Private parks such as Double M Campground, Bear Branch Campgrounds, and Riverview RV Park are booked directly with the operator by phone or website. Full-hookup sites at private parks tend to fill first on summer weekends.
Shawnee National Forest developed campgrounds are booked through Recreation.gov, while dispersed camping in the forest is free and does not require a reservation.
What to expect on the ground
Roads into the Shawnee are narrow, hilly, and sometimes gravel, with a few shallow creek crossings on the more remote forest routes. Larger Class A rigs are easier to place at private parks and at Cave-in-rock's Class A loop, where electric sites can accommodate units up to 60 feet. At Dixon Springs State Park, sites run along a wooded hillside and leveling can be a challenge for longer trailers.
Hookup levels vary. Expect full hookups at some private parks, electric only at most state park sites, and no services at national forest primitive areas. Firewood and ice are not sold inside Cave-in-rock State Park, so buy those in town before heading in.
Cell coverage is patchy across the forest, wildlife includes deer, raccoons, and ticks, and the closest towns for groceries and fuel are Harrisburg, Golconda, and Elizabethtown.
