Campgrounds and RV parks near Evansville, IL

Fishing anchors most trips. Randolph County State Recreation Area holds a 65-acre lake stocked with largemouth bass, bluegill, channel catfish, walleye, saugeye, and rainbow trout, with a boat ramp and a 10 HP motor limit. Hiking trails wind through woods and along the lakeshore, and about 11.6 miles of equestrian trails double as cross-country ski routes in winter. History travelers pair a stay at Fort Kaskaskia SHS with the short walk down the bluff footpath to the Pierre Menard Home. The World Shooting and Recreational Complex offers trap, skeet, sporting clays, and cowboy action shooting on one of the largest ranges in the world, plus fishing on its on-site lakes. Hunting seasons for deer, dove, squirrel, quail, and rabbit are active on state land in fall and winter.

Spring brings the widest swings. March and April can be cold and wet, with river levels running high on the Kaskaskia and Mississippi. By May the trails firm up and reservable state-park sites start to book quickly. Weekends fill fast around Memorial Day. Summer is hot and humid. Highs in the low 30s Celsius with heavy afternoon storms are common through July and August. Shaded loops at Randolph County State Recreation Area are in demand, and reservable sites go first. The World Shooting and Recreational Complex fills for the Grand American Trapshooting Championships in early August, so nearby overflow demand rises then. Mosquitoes and ticks are active in wooded and lakeside sites. Fall is the strongest season for RV travel in the area. Cooler nights, lower humidity, and hardwood color through October drive steady weekend traffic. Hunting seasons overlap with camping on state land, so pack blaze orange for trail use. Winter camping is limited, water is shut off at many state sites, and only hardier travelers use electric pads through December and January.

Roads into the state sites are paved but narrow, with tight turns on the approach to Randolph County State Recreation Area from Palestine Road. A dump station sits about a mile before the main campground entrance, so empty tanks before pulling into the loop. Sites are mostly gravel, most shaded, with spacing that runs tight on busy weekends. Randolph County offers Class BE electric sites, Class C sites with fuller hookups, a horse camp, and primitive sites. At Fort Kaskaskia SHS, the campground mixes primitive tent sites with 32 electrified sites and uses vault toilets, so plan for onboard water and limited showers. Cell coverage is patchy on the bluffs near Fort Kaskaskia. Nearest full-service resupply is in Chester or Sparta, both a short drive away.
