Campgrounds and RV parks near Fairfield, IL

Water recreation anchors most trips. The lake at Stephen A. Forbes State Recreation Area sits within 1,150 acres of oak-hickory forest and has 18 miles of shoreline, with boat access and fishing for largemouth bass and other warmwater species. Families staying at Oak Ridge Campground - Stephen A Forbes State Recreation Area can reach the lake directly, and a 120-foot floating walkway connects the campground with the marina area. Hikers should target Beall Woods State Park, known for its old-growth hardwood stands along the Wabash River, and Harmonie State Park Campground, which offers walking, biking, mountain biking, and nature hikes plus a seasonal nature center. On-site entertainment at Grayville / I-64 KOA Holiday includes a Western-themed layout with a playground, miniature golf course, mechanical shooting gallery, ice cream parlor, and restaurant, which helps on travel days when kids need to burn off energy without leaving camp.

Peak RV season in southern Illinois runs from late April through mid-October. Summer days average in the upper 80s Fahrenheit with high humidity and frequent afternoon thunderstorms, so shaded state-park loops fill first. Weekends around Memorial Day, the Fourth of July, and Labor Day book out well in advance at Stephen A. Forbes and Harmonie. Spring and fall are the most comfortable windows for touring. Fall brings reliable color through the oak-hickory forests that surround Stephen A. Forbes and Beall Woods, and bug pressure drops off sharply after the first cool nights. Spring can be wet, and Wabash-adjacent low ground occasionally floods. Winter camping is limited. Grayville / I-64 KOA Holiday operates year round, but Illinois state-park campgrounds typically shift to reduced services once freezing weather sets in, so verify status with the park office before booking a cold-month trip.

Expect a mix of interstate-convenient private parks and quieter, wooded state-park loops. Grayville / I-64 KOA Holiday offers level sites nearly 100 ft long and 50/30/20 amp, with water and sewer full hook up, which suits larger rentals and slide-out coaches. State parks lean simpler. Oak Ridge Campground - Stephen A Forbes State Recreation Area offers electric and water hookups with a shower building and dump station, but no sewer at the site. Harmonie State Park Campground is similar, with a 200-site family campground with electrical hookups and modern restrooms rather than full hookups. Cell coverage is generally usable near I-64 and thinner inside the state parks. Bring drinking water, insect repellent for warm months, and firewood purchased locally, since Illinois and Indiana both restrict moving firewood to limit pest spread.
