Forest Park holds the zoo along with several major museums, and the Missouri Botanical Garden sits nearby. Cahokia Mounds State Historic Site, a UNESCO World Heritage site, is within easy reach for a half-day trip. On the Illinois side, Horseshoe Lake State Park offers hiking, biking, boating, canoeing, kayaking, fishing, picnicking and wildlife viewing. Peak RV season runs from late April through mid-October. Late spring is the wettest stretch, and the Metro East can see thunderstorms, flash flooding along creeks, and occasional tornado warnings from April into June. Thunderstorms normally occur on between 40 and 50 days per year in the St. Louis area, and a few each year are severe, producing large hail and damaging winds. Summer is hot and humid, with high dew points and heavy afternoon storms; sites with shade and 50 amp service for air conditioning fill first. State-run camping has a defined season. The Horseshoe Lake State Park campground is open from May 1 to September 30, campers can stay a maximum of 7 days in a 30-day period, and the park does not take reservations for camping. Access to Chouteau Island is currently closed due to bridge repair, and the campground, the road leading to it, picnic shelter #3 and the hiking trail are closed due to a causeway installation project, so confirm status with IDNR before planning a stay there. Fall brings cooler nights, lower humidity, and generally the most stable camping weather. Private RV parks in the metro area typically stay open year-round, sometimes on reduced winter services.

Expect a split between full-service private parks and rustic public sites. Full-hookup parks near the river offer paved or gravel pads, 30 and 50 amp electric, water, and sewer. Cahokia RV Parque has 121 sites, six tent-only sites, a 55-foot max RV length, accepts big rigs, and offers 24 pull-throughs with 103 full hookups on 20/30/50 amp service, plus a pool, playground, laundry, showers, and the on-site Sawmill BBQ restaurant. The park also runs shuttles into downtown St. Louis and guided tours of major attractions. Urban sites tend to sit close together. State park camping is primitive. Horseshoe Lake State Park accommodates 26 tent or trailer campsites, with a sanitary dump station, pit toilets, and water hydrants, but no showers or hookups. Cell coverage is generally strong across the Metro East. Mosquitoes and ticks are active from late spring through early fall in the river bottoms, so plan for repellent and check pets after hikes.
