Campgrounds near Freeport, Illinois
Freeport sits in Stephenson County in northwest Illinois, within reach of the rolling farmland, wooded ridges, and small lakes of the state's northern tier. RV travelers use the city as a base for trips into Jo Daviess County, Galena, and the Wisconsin border, with several campgrounds clustered north and west of town along the US 20 corridor.
Options range from full-service private parks to a state-run lakeside campground. Lena KOA Holiday, Emerald Acres Campground II, Lake LaDonna Family Campground, and Hansens Hide Away Ranch and Family Campground offer private-park amenities like hookups, pools, and organized activities. Family - Lake Le-Aqua-Na State Recreation Area provides a more traditional public-park experience on a 40-acre lake near Lena, three miles south of the Illinois-Wisconsin state line.
Most sites accommodate travel trailers and motorhomes with 30- and 50-amp service, and pull-through sites are common at the larger private parks. Freeport itself has grocery, fuel, and RV supply stops, making it practical to provision before heading to a site.
Things to do near Freeport
The 40-acre lake at Family - Lake Le-Aqua-Na State Recreation Area anchors most outdoor plans in the area. Anglers fish for largemouth bass, bluegill, crappie, walleye, northern pike, and channel catfish, and only electric motors are permitted on the lake. A swimming beach and boat launch adjacent to the concession stand round out water access. The park also offers multi-use trails for hiking, mountain biking, and equestrian use.
Families staying at Lena KOA Holiday have access to a heated pool, a jumping pillow, an off-leash Kamp K9 area, and organized weekend activities like ice cream socials, hayrides, pancake breakfasts, and themed events that run from May through the Columbus Day weekend in October.
Off-site, Galena's historic district is about 38 miles west via US 20.

The main camping season in the Freeport area runs from mid-spring through late fall. Lena KOA Holiday typically opens in mid-April and closes in late October, and most private parks follow a similar window. Family - Lake Le-Aqua-Na State Recreation Area keeps its RV campground open year-round, but the shower building with flush toilets and the trailer dump station are only operational from May 1 to November 1. The equestrian campground and trails are available from April 15 to November 15, weather permitting, and may close after wet conditions.
Summer is the busiest stretch, with July drawing the heaviest visitation and holiday weekends filling private parks weeks in advance. Late spring brings the wettest conditions of the year, with May averaging the highest monthly precipitation.
Winter camping is limited. Ice fishing, sledding, and cross-country skiing are the main cold-weather draws at Lake Le-Aqua-Na, but the shower building is closed and campground access is restricted after 10 p.m. except for registered campers.

We had an amazing experience renting a camper from Catherine! From start to finish, she made the process so easy. The camper was spotless, fully stocked with everything we needed (and then some!), and it made our trip comfortable and stress-free. Catherine was incredibly responsive and always quick to answer any questions we had. It was obvious she put a lot of thought into making sure her guests had a great experience. If you’re looking to rent a camper, we highly recommend Catherine. We wouldn’t hesitate to rent from her again. Thank you for helping make our weekend such a wonderful trip!

Josh was fantastic; I appreciate him staying for an hour and showing me around the RV since it was my first time. The RV was exactly as described, and we enjoyed our first family camping trip in it.
Brandon B. - Jul 2026
We had an excellent experience in Josh’s camper. Both Josh and RV easy were a pleasure to deal with and kept in Prompt communication. Both Josh and RV easy were a pleasure to deal with. The camper was delivered as promised and picked up on time. The camper was as advertised with all the creature comforts of home. We will definitely be looking for Josh’s trailer through RVezy for the Labor Day camping trip next year. 10 out of 10!

How to book a site
Reservation systems vary by property. Family - Lake Le-Aqua-Na State Recreation Area accepts reservations through the ExploreMoreIL platform run by the Illinois Department of Natural Resources. Campers must have a camping unit on arrival, establish camp, and obtain a permit at the park, and they cannot buy extra permits in advance to hold sites for friends arriving later.
Lena KOA Holiday books directly through the KOA website or by phone, with Deluxe Patio RV sites and cabins filling first for summer weekends. Emerald Acres Campground II, Lake LaDonna Family Campground, and Hansens Hide Away Ranch and Family Campground take reservations through their own offices and websites.
For holiday weekends and the July peak, book well ahead. For shoulder-season trips in April, May, or October, midweek availability is usually easier to find.
What to expect on-site
Sites in the Freeport area lean toward open, grassy, and lightly wooded rather than deep-forest secluded. At Family - Lake Le-Aqua-Na State Recreation Area, few sites are secluded and most are open and spacious with adequate shade, and a large number of electric sites with water are available throughout the campgrounds. Private parks like Lena KOA Holiday provide level pads, full hookups on many sites, laundry, Wi-Fi, and a camp store.
Alcoholic beverages are prohibited at all times in the state park campgrounds, and pets must be leashed and attended at all times. Private parks generally allow leashed pets and campfires at the site fire ring.
Cell coverage is reliable in and around Freeport and Lena. Roads to the state park include rural county segments, so drivers of larger rigs should plan turns carefully and check conditions after heavy rain.

weather.gov/lot/I've never driven an RV. Will I be okay renting in Freeport?

Your host provides a full walkthrough at pickup: how to operate the awning, water systems, generator, slide-outs, and brakes, plus tips for hooking up at the campground. Freeport's flat-to-gently-rolling roads, light traffic on US-20 and IL-26, and short distances to campgrounds (Lake Le-Aqua-Na is only 15 miles away) make for a confidence-building first drive. Pro tip: ask the host to record a short video of the walkthrough on your phone so you can replay it at the campsite when you're setting up for the first time.

Most motorhomes have seatbelts for travel and many include a TV, Bluetooth stereo, and outdoor awning. Wi-Fi hotspots and generators are common add-ons. Every listing on RVezy spells out exactly what's included with photos. Pro tip: filter by 'Sleeps 6' or more for a family RV trip Freeport adventure, then check for an outdoor kitchen, perfect for s'mores at Lake Le-Aqua-Na.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Freeport,%20IllinoisWhat add-ons and pickup options should I know about?
Hosts in Freeport offer a buffet of helpful add-ons: linen and towel packages ($25 to $75), camping chairs and outdoor rugs, generator usage, bike racks, kitchen kits, propane refills, and pet packages. Mileage policies vary by listing (often 100 to 150 miles per day, with paid options to add more or go unlimited). For pickup, you can meet the host at their location (often near downtown Freeport or off US-20) for a 30-to-45-minute walkthrough, or pay for delivery to your campsite. Late returns typically incur an hourly fee, so plan a relaxed buffer. Pro tip: ask the host to throw in a starter bundle of propane and fresh water, it's the difference between arriving and actually relaxing.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Freeport,%20IllinoisHow do payment and the security deposit work on RVezy?
Payment is simple and fully handled through RVezy, no cash or checks change hands with the host. You'll pay the rental total (nightly rate, fees, taxes, and chosen protection plan) by credit or debit card when you book. A refundable security deposit is pre-authorized on your card before pickup, typically a few hundred to a couple thousand dollars depending on the RV, and released after the trip assuming no damages, excess mileage, or missing items. Avoid hiccups by documenting the RV's condition with photos at pickup and dropoff. Pro tip: empty holding tanks and refill propane before returning the rig, those are two of the most common reasons hosts deduct from deposits in the Freeport area.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360038106214-How-the-security-deposit-worksCan I rent an RV in Freeport during winter for a snow trip?
Yes, winter RV rental in Freeport is doable and a memorable way to see northern Illinois under snow. Some hosts offer four-season rigs with heated holding tanks, enclosed underbellies, and shore-power-ready setups, perfect for cross-country skiing at Krape Park or snowshoeing the Jane Addams Trail. January temperatures average roughly 13 to 30 degrees Fahrenheit with regular snowfall, so confirm the rig is winterized and ask about skirting, electric blankets, and propane refills. Water hookups at Lake Le-Aqua-Na are shut off outside the warm season, so plan to arrive with full fresh water. Pro tip: book a host who offers delivery and setup so you don't deal with frozen hookups your first time out.
