Camping near Godfrey, Illinois
Godfrey sits in Madison County on the Illinois side of the Mississippi River, just north of Alton and roughly a half-hour drive from downtown St. Louis. That location puts RV travelers within easy reach of both Metro East campgrounds and the bluff country along the Great River Road, giving trip planners a wide mix of full-hookup parks, state park sites, and urban base camps.
Options closest to town lean toward private, full-service RV parks. St. Louis NE/I-270/Granite City KOA Journey serves as a common interstate stop for travelers passing through, while Safari RV Park and Sundermeier RV Park offer settled sites on either side of the river. DraftKings at Casino Queen RV Park in East St. Louis puts campers near the riverfront and a MetroLink station into the city.
For a public-land experience, Horseshoe Lake State Park sits off Highway 111 in Madison County on 2,960 acres just minutes from the surrounding urban area, offering a rustic alternative to the private parks.
Things to do around Godfrey
The Great River Road north of Godfrey follows the Mississippi through Alton and Grafton, with river overlooks, cycling on the Sam Vadalabene Bike Trail, and winery stops. Bald eagle viewing draws visitors to the bluffs in mid-winter, when the birds concentrate along open water below the locks and dams.
Campers at Horseshoe Lake State Park have direct access to fishing, hiking, and wildlife viewing. The park offers a wide variety of recreational opportunities including hiking, biking, boating, canoeing, kayaking, fishing, picnicking and wildlife viewing. The lake holds channel catfish, bass, crappie, bluegill, carp, and buffalo, and boat fishing is allowed except during waterfowl season.
Across the river, St. Louis adds the Gateway Arch, Forest Park, and the City Museum, all within a short drive of the closer RV parks.

Peak camping season runs from late April through October, with the shoulder months of May, September, and October generally offering the most comfortable temperatures for RV travel. Summer brings heat and humidity, with July daytime highs averaging near 31°C, so awnings and tie-downs matter during afternoon thunderstorms.
State park schedules narrow the window for public-land camping. Horseshoe Lake State Park's campground is open from May 1 to September 30, and campers can stay a maximum of 7 days in a 30-day period. Private parks in the corridor typically stay open year-round, though some services scale back in winter.
Winter is the quietest season for camping but a strong draw for eagle watching along the river bluffs. Spring brings higher river levels and occasional flooding on low-lying Mississippi backwaters, which can affect access to riverfront sites and trails.
Booking a campsite near Godfrey
Reservation systems vary sharply between public and private parks in this area. Private RV parks such as St. Louis NE/I-270/Granite City KOA Journey, Safari RV Park, Sundermeier RV Park, and DraftKings at Casino Queen RV Park take reservations directly through their own websites or phone lines, and full-hookup sites near the interstates fill quickly for summer weekends and major St. Louis events.
Illinois state parks use the ExploreMoreIL platform for reservable sites, but not every park participates. Horseshoe Lake State Park does not take reservations for individual camping, though group camping reservations are accepted through the ExploreMoreIL website. For summer holiday weekends, arriving Thursday or early Friday improves the odds of securing a spot at the state park while relying on advance bookings at the private parks.
What to expect on the ground
Site quality varies widely. The private parks in the corridor generally offer paved or gravel pads, 30 and 50 amp electric, water, sewer, and Wi-Fi, and most can accommodate large Class A rigs and travel trailers. Interstate-adjacent parks trade some quiet for convenience and easy pull-through access.
Expectations for the state park should be lower. Horseshoe Lake State Park accommodates 26 tent or trailer campsites, with a sanitary dump station, pit toilets, and water hydrants on site. No showers or electrical hook ups are provided, so self-contained rigs handle it best.
Cell coverage is strong throughout the Metro East. Mosquitoes and humidity are consistent summer companions near the river bottoms, and travelers should watch for severe weather alerts during the spring and summer storm season.
