Campgrounds and RV parks near Greenup, IL

Hiking is the anchor activity at Fox Ridge State Park. The park's eight-mile trail system connects ten trails with descriptive markers and includes 18 wooden bridges and rest benches to help with the steep glacial-moraine terrain. Ridge Lake fishing requires a reservation since the lake serves as a research facility, though anglers can also fish the Embarras River for bluegill, catfish, and bass. Water recreation centers on Lake Mattoon and Mill Creek Lake, both offering boating and fishing from shore or dock. Families staying at Casey KOA typically walk into town to see the World's Largest wind chime, rocking chair, golf tee, knitting needles, and other oversized attractions. Lincoln Log Cabin State Historic Site is a few miles south of Charleston, and Lake Charleston has nesting bald eagles plus fishing, hiking, and bike trails. The Arthur and Arcola Amish community to the north is a common day trip.

The Illinois state park camping season centers on the warm months. At Fox Ridge, shower buildings close by November 1 (potentially earlier in bad weather) and reopen in spring, weather permitting. Expect first-come sites to fill on summer weekends and holidays, particularly during Eastern Illinois University events in Charleston and around Casey's July festivities. Private and county parks run a longer but still limited season. Casey KOA is open March 1 through October 31, with limited facilities in March and the pool available from Memorial Day Weekend through Labor Day Weekend. Mill Creek Park's camping season runs April 1 through October 31 and may shift slightly with the weather. Lakeside Timbers takes stays ranging from overnight to full-season, so shoulder-season availability tends to be better there. Spring brings wildflower bloom and higher rainfall, which can leave gravel sites soft. Summer is peak booking season and also the hottest, most humid stretch. Fall delivers reliable color through the Embarras River bluffs and cooler nights for campfires. Winter camping options are minimal, and most state and county shower buildings are closed.

Expect a mix of forested state-park camping and open, hookup-focused private parks. Fox Ridge offers clean restrooms and shower facilities, electric hookups at each site, and shared water access, with sites that are spacious and shaded. Most sites are back-in only, with no pull-throughs, so plan your approach if you are towing. Casey KOA is the easier stop for larger rigs, with pull-through sites, big-rig access off I-70 exit 129, and a maximum pull-through length of 70 feet. Lakeside Timbers is geared to lakefront RV stays, while Mill Creek Park is a larger county campground with electric at each site, one water station shared among three to four sites, and shower houses. Cell service is generally usable across the area but can be spotty in the wooded ravines at Fox Ridge. Bring what you need with you: there are no businesses close to the state park.
