Campgrounds near Hanover, Illinois
Hanover sits in Jo Daviess County in northwestern Illinois, a few miles inland from the Mississippi River between Galena and Savanna. The surrounding driftless region features limestone bluffs, hardwood ridges, and river backwaters, and most campgrounds in the area cluster along the Great River Road corridor on both the Illinois and Iowa sides of the river.
The closest developed camping options include Bellevue State Park Dyas Unit Campground across the river in Iowa, where sites sit on bluffs above the Mississippi and offer a mix of electric and non-electric options, and Vel Terra Campground near Hanover itself. To the south, Mississippi Palisades State Park is a 2,500-acre park near the confluence of the Mississippi and Apple rivers, followed by Seven Eagles Resort and Campground outside Savanna and Palace Camp Ground further along the river road.
The mix of state park, private resort, and small rural campgrounds gives RV renters a range of options within a short drive of Hanover.
Things to do near Hanover
Hiking dominates the area. Mississippi Palisades State Park has a rugged 15-mile trail system, with wider, easier trails in the northern part of the park and narrower, more strenuous routes close to the bluff in the south. Sentinel Rock, along with named overlooks like Lookout Point, is reachable by short walks and rewards visitors with sweeping river views.
River-based recreation is a major draw. The Bellevue State Park main overlook sits atop a 250-foot limestone bluff with views over the Upper Mississippi River Wildlife Refuge, Lock and Dam 12, and the town of Bellevue. The Great River Bike Trail passes near Savanna and follows the Mississippi corridor, offering easy cycling from riverside campgrounds. Fishing, kayaking, and wildlife watching are common along the backwaters, and hunting is permitted on portions of Mississippi Palisades outside the campground.

The peak season runs late spring through mid-fall. At Mississippi Palisades, shower buildings and flush toilets operate from May 1 through October 31, and services taper outside those months. The Bellevue State Park Dyas Unit sees its busiest use from spring through fall, with reduced amenities in the shoulder months. Summer weekends and holidays book heavily, and first-come, first-served sites fill quickly during summer holidays.
Early summer brings bugs. Gnats and mosquitoes can be significant, particularly in spring and early summer near the low-lying areas around the bluffs and river backwaters. Southern bluff trails at Mississippi Palisades become slick and hazardous after rain.
Fall is a strong shoulder season for foliage along the bluffs, and winter draws wildlife viewers. Bald eagles concentrate to feed near the open waters below Lock and Dam 12, making late December through February a productive time for eagle watching near Bellevue.
How to book campgrounds near Hanover
State park sites use two different reservation systems. At Mississippi Palisades State Park, reservations are made through the Illinois Department of Natural Resources ExploreMoreIL platform, and only permit holders are allowed in the campground overnight. Bellevue State Park's Dyas Unit offers electric and non-electric sites, modern restrooms and showers, and a sanitary dump station, with advance reservations booked through the Iowa state parks reservation system on ReserveAmerica. Half of the Dyas Unit campsites remain available for self-registration on a first-come, first-served basis.
Private campgrounds book directly. Seven Eagles Resort and Campground takes reservations through its own site, and Vel Terra Campground and Palace Camp Ground handle bookings by phone or their websites. For summer weekends, reserve as far ahead as the system allows, especially for the limited full-hookup pull-through sites suited to larger rentals.
What to expect
Sites vary widely in style. Mississippi Palisades has 241 Class A and B campsites, with 110 offering electric hookups, three shower and flush toilet buildings, water stations located throughout the campground rather than at each site, and two sanitary dump stations. The Dyas Unit at Bellevue has 46 camping units, 31 with electrical hookups, plus modern restrooms, showers, and a dump station.
Private resorts offer more amenities. Seven Eagles Resort features full hookups, laundry facilities, and easy access to the Great River Bike Trail, and cell service and WiFi strength can vary throughout the grounds.
Expect gravel pads, tree cover that ranges from open loops to dense hardwood, and steep grades on some bluff-side loops. RV renters should confirm site length and hookup type before booking.

How much does it cost to rent an RV in Hanover, IL?
RV rental in Hanover, IL is one of the most affordable ways to experience the Driftless Area. On RVezy, travel trailers typically start around $90 to $150 per night, Class C motorhomes range from $175 to $275 per night, and larger Class A rigs run $250 to $400 per night. Weekday bookings (Sunday through Thursday) often save you 15 to 25 percent versus peak weekends, and many Hanover-area hosts offer weekly discounts of 10 percent or more, which adds up fast if you're exploring Mississippi Palisades State Park and Galena on the same trip. Tip: book by early March for fall foliage weekends in October, when prices climb with leaf-peeper demand along the Great River Road.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Hanover,IllinoisDo I need a special license to rent an RV in Hanover, Illinois?
Great news for first-time renters: your regular driver's license is all you need to rent an RV in Hanover, Illinois. Illinois does not require a Commercial Driver's License (CDL) or special endorsement for personal-use motorhomes or travel trailers under 26,000 pounds, which covers essentially every RV on the RVezy platform. RVezy approved drivers are generally 25 or older, and your ID is verified securely through the booking process so there's nothing to print or hand over at pickup. Visiting from abroad? Bring an International Driving Permit along with your home-country license. You can be unloading groceries at Mississippi Palisades campground the same afternoon you arrive in the area.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039008774-Understanding-approved-driver-requirementsWhat protection is included when I rent an RV in Hanover, IL?
Every RVezy booking in Hanover includes a renter protection plan and 24/7 roadside assistance, so you can focus on the bald eagles soaring above the Mississippi instead of the what-ifs. RVezy offers multiple protection plan tiers and you choose your level of coverage during checkout (not the host), so you can match the plan to your comfort level and budget. The plan covers eligible physical damage to the RV during your trip, giving real peace of mind for common mishaps like a scraped awning at a tight campsite or a cracked windshield on Highway 84. Combined with included roadside support, you've got a safety net from the moment you pull out of the driveway.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailWhat happens if I need to cancel my Hanover RV rental?
Booking is low-risk: RVezy sets the cancellation policy (not individual hosts), so the terms are consistent across every Hanover-area listing. The refund amount depends on how far in advance you cancel relative to your trip start date, and you can review the full cancellation policy in the RVezy Help Center or during checkout before you confirm. If a host cancels on you, RVezy refunds your booking or helps you rebook. Tip: if your dates are flexible, message the host early to ask about shoulder-season openings in late April or early October when Jo Daviess County is gorgeous and quieter.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360037736674-Understanding-the-cancellation-policy-for-guestsCan I bring my dog on a pet-friendly RV rental in Hanover?
Absolutely, and Hanover is a tail-wagger's paradise. Filter for pet-friendly RV rental Hanover listings on RVezy with one click, then plan adventures your dog will love: leashed pets are welcome throughout Mississippi Palisades State Park, including the campground and most hiking trails, where they can sniff their way past the famous Twin Sisters rock formation. The Great River Trail running between Savanna and Hanover is another easy, flat walk for older or smaller pups. Many hosts charge a small pet fee ($25 to $75 per trip) shown clearly on the listing. Bring a tie-out, collapsible water bowl, and waste bags, and you're set for a stress-free family RV trip Hanover-style.
dnr.illinois.gov/parks/park.mississippipalisades.htmlCan the RV be delivered to my campground in Hanover?
Yes, RV delivery Hanover is one of the easiest ways to start your trip, especially if you're flying into the area or it's your first time renting an RV. Many Hanover and Jo Daviess County hosts will deliver the motorhome or travel trailer directly to Mississippi Palisades State Park, Spring Lake Campground, or even a private driveway in Galena, then level it, hook up water and power, and walk you through every system before they leave. Delivery fees are typically calculated by mileage from the host's location and shown on the listing. Just message the host with your destination and dates before booking to confirm. It turns a potentially intimidating pickup into a true door-to-door vacation.
dnr.illinois.gov/parks/park.mississippipalisades.htmlHow does mileage work, and are there RV rentals with unlimited mileage in Hanover?
You've got flexibility here. Each Hanover host sets their own mileage policy, and you'll see it clearly on the listing before you book: many offer 100 to 150 free miles per night, while others list RV rental with unlimited mileage, which is perfect if you're planning a longer loop. For reference, a typical Hanover-based getaway covers modest distances: Galena is about 25 miles north, Dubuque, Iowa is roughly 40 miles, and Chicago is about 165 miles east. If you're plotting a bigger Midwest loop through Wisconsin's Door County or down the Great River Road to St. Louis, filter for unlimited-mileage listings or message hosts about a flat-rate mileage add-on for your route.
fhwa.dot.gov/byways/byways/2249Where are the best campgrounds near Hanover, IL?
You're spoiled for choice. The crown jewel is Mississippi Palisades State Park Campground, just north of Hanover, with hundreds of Class A and B sites, electric hookups, showers and flush toilets in season, plus bluff-top hikes overlooking the river. Blanding Landing Recreation Area, a U.S. Army Corps of Engineers campground south of Hanover, offers riverside electric sites perfect for sunsets. In Galena, Palace Campground provides full hookups and a pool, and there are additional private RV parks throughout Jo Daviess County. Tip for RV camping Hanover: reserve Mississippi Palisades through the Illinois DNR reservation system up to six months ahead for prime October fall-color weekends.
dnr.illinois.gov/parks/park.mississippipalisades.htmlWhen is the best time of year for an RV trip in Hanover?
Hanover is a true four-season destination, but the sweet spot is mid-May through mid-October. Late spring (May to June) brings blooming wildflowers and daytime highs in the 70s, perfect for hiking the Palisades. Summer (July and August) is warm and humid with highs in the mid-80s and lows in the mid-60s, great for kayaking the Mississippi backwaters. Early to mid-October is hands-down the local favorite: crisp 60-degree days, vibrant maple and oak color across the Driftless bluffs, and far fewer crowds than Starved Rock. Winter is cold (often below 20°F) with snow, but it's also bald eagle season along the river. Pro tip: visit Hanover in late January for the Bald Eagle Watch festivities downriver in Iowa, an unforgettable shoulder-season experience.
weather.gov/dvn/I've never driven an RV. Will I be okay renting one in Hanover?
You're going to do great, and Hanover is genuinely one of the friendlier places to learn. Every RVezy host gives you a hands-on walkthrough at pickup, covering how to drive, level, hook up, dump, and use the propane and generator, plus they're a text away during your trip. For your first time renting an RV, consider a compact Class C motorhome or campervan rental Hanover, which drives much more like a large van than a bus. The roads around Hanover are quiet two-lanes (Highway 84 along the river is scenic and low-stress), and Mississippi Palisades campsites are spacious and easy to back into. Take it slow, use a spotter when parking, and you'll feel like a pro by day two.
idot.illinois.gov/travel-information/indexWhat happens if the RV breaks down during my Hanover trip?
You're covered. Every RVezy booking includes 24/7 roadside assistance as part of the protection package, so if you get a flat on Highway 20 heading to Galena or the battery dies at a Palisades overlook, one phone call gets help dispatched. For mechanical issues, your host is your first text: they know their rig inside and out and can often troubleshoot in minutes (think tripped GFCI outlets or a propane regulator reset). Hanover is small but well-served: there are repair shops and tire services in Savanna (10 minutes) and Galena (25 minutes), plus full automotive support in Dubuque, Iowa, just across the river. Save the RVezy support number in your phone before departure and you'll never feel stranded.
idot.illinois.gov/travel-information/winter-road-conditions.htmlWhat are the best RV road trips from Hanover?
Hanover sits at the heart of the Driftless Area, so amazing routes are everywhere. Top picks: drive the Great River Road north 25 miles to historic Galena for boutique shopping and wine tasting, then continue 40 miles into Dubuque, Iowa for the National Mississippi River Museum. Head 90 miles northeast to Wisconsin's Wisconsin Dells for waterparks and dells boat tours. Loop 165 miles east to Chicago for a city contrast (drop the RV at a suburban campground and train in). For a longer RV road trip from Hanover, follow the Great River Road south 280 miles to the Quad Cities and onward to St. Louis. Cross-border note: trips into Canada may be allowed with host approval, but travel to Mexico is not permitted on RVezy rentals.
fhwa.dot.gov/byways/byways/2249What kind of fuel economy and gas budget should I expect?
Plan smart and your fuel budget stays reasonable. Class B campervans get 18 to 22 MPG, Class C motorhomes average 8 to 12 MPG, and big Class A rigs run 6 to 10 MPG. Most Hanover-area RVs run on regular unleaded gas, with some diesel Class A and C options. Illinois gas prices typically run a bit above the national average due to state fuel taxes, so consider fueling up across the river in Iowa (Dubuque is 40 minutes away) where prices are often 20 to 40 cents lower per gallon. For a typical 200-mile weekend loop from Hanover to Galena, Dubuque, and back in a Class C, budget roughly $80 to $120 in fuel. Drive 55 to 60 mph on Highway 84 to stretch every gallon.
eia.gov/petroleum/gasdiesel/How far in advance should I book a campground near Hanover?
Book early and you'll lock in the best spots. Mississippi Palisades State Park, the most popular campground near Hanover, opens reservations six months in advance through Illinois' official ExploreMoreIL reservation system, and prime weekends (Memorial Day, July 4th, and October fall-color Saturdays) often sell out within hours of opening. For shoulder-season weekdays in May or late September, two to four weeks ahead is usually plenty. Private parks like Spring Lake Campground in Savanna and Palace Campground in Galena take direct reservations and tend to fill 1 to 2 months ahead in summer. Pro tip: if Palisades shows full, check back daily, cancellations are common, especially within the two-week window before a weekend.
exploremoreil.com/What are the local driving conditions like around Hanover?
Hanover driving is refreshingly mellow compared to big-city RV travel. The main routes (Highway 84 along the Mississippi, Highway 20 east toward Freeport, and U.S. 52 north toward Galena) are well-maintained two-lane roads with gentle curves and beautiful Driftless Area bluffs. Watch for these local realities: deer are very active at dawn and dusk (especially October to November), winter brings real snow and ice from December through March, and some scenic back roads near Galena have steep grades and tight switchbacks better suited to smaller rigs. Avoid the narrow downtown streets of historic Galena in anything over 25 feet; park at the visitor center lot instead. Otherwise, keep it under 60 mph and enjoy one of the prettiest drives in the Midwest.
idot.illinois.gov/travel-information/winter-road-conditions.htmlWhat amenities will I find at campgrounds around Hanover?
You'll find a great mix. Mississippi Palisades State Park offers 110 electric sites (no full hookups), three shower buildings with flush toilets open May 1 to October 31, potable water spigots throughout, and a dump station near the campground exit, so plan to arrive with empty tanks and full fresh water. Private parks like Spring Lake Campground and Palace Campground in Galena typically offer 30/50-amp electric, water, and sewer at the site, plus laundry, Wi-Fi, and camp stores. For dumping between trips, the Mississippi Palisades dump station is open seasonally and free for registered campers, and many gas stations along Highway 20 toward Galena offer potable water fills. Always confirm hookup amps with your host before booking so you bring the right adapter.
dnr.illinois.gov/parks/camp/park.mississippipalisades.htmlWhat's inside a typical RV rental in Hanover?
More than you'd expect, and everything you need for a comfortable Driftless adventure. Most Hanover-area rentals come fully equipped: a queen or king bed plus convertible dinettes and bunks (sleeps 4 to 8 depending on size), a kitchen with fridge/freezer, propane stove, microwave, sink, and basic cookware, a wet or dry bathroom with toilet and shower, air conditioning, a furnace for cool nights, and 12V/110V power. Many include a TV, Bluetooth stereo, outdoor speakers, and an awning for shaded riverside lunches. Wi-Fi and generators are common add-ons listed clearly on the listing. Seatbelts are installed at every designated passenger seat. Just bring linens (many hosts provide them), food, and your sense of adventure.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Hanover,IllinoisWhat add-ons and options can I get with my Hanover RV rental?
Hanover hosts offer a buffet of useful extras to customize your motorhome rental Hanover experience. Common add-ons include linen and towel packages ($25 to $75), camp chairs and outdoor tables ($15 to $40), generator use ($3 to $5 per hour or flat daily), portable grills, bike racks, kayak/SUP loading help, and even pre-stocked kitchen kits. Pickup is usually at the host's home in Hanover, Savanna, Galena, or Elizabeth, with a 30 to 60 minute orientation, while drop-off mirrors pickup unless you've arranged delivery. Mileage policies range from 100 free miles per night to fully unlimited, all displayed up front. Pro tip: book the dump-and-clean add-on for $50 to $100 to skip the dump station on your return day and head straight home.
dnr.illinois.gov/parks/park.mississippipalisades.htmlHow does payment and the security deposit work?
Easy and transparent. When you book your RV rental in Hanover, IL through RVezy, you pay securely online via the platform: no cash, no awkward parking-lot exchanges. Your total includes the nightly rate, RVezy service fee, your chosen protection plan, taxes, and any host add-ons (delivery, mileage upgrades, generator, etc.), all itemized before you confirm. A refundable security deposit is held separately from your booking payment and released back to you after the trip ends, assuming the RV is returned clean, on time, undamaged, and within mileage and generator limits. To avoid surprises: take dated photos and a short video at pickup and drop-off, refill propane and fuel to starting levels, and dump tanks before return.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360038106214-How-the-security-deposit-worksCan I rent an RV in Hanover during winter?
Yes, and winter RVing in the Driftless Area is a hidden gem. Some Hanover hosts keep four-season rigs available year-round, equipped with heated holding tanks, enclosed underbellies, extra insulation, and reliable propane furnaces, perfect for January bald eagle watching along the open water of Lock and Dam 12 in Bellevue, Iowa (just 20 minutes away), or cross-country skiing the snowy trails at Mississippi Palisades State Park. Plan for real cold: overnight lows from December through February often dip into the single digits or below zero. You'll want a campground with shore power (30/50-amp electric stays open at a few private parks), bring extra propane, use heat tape on hoses, and ask your host for a full winterization walkthrough at pickup. It's a peaceful, crowd-free way to experience northwest Illinois.
