Campgrounds near Harrisburg, Illinois
Harrisburg sits in Saline County at the northern edge of the Shawnee National Forest, the only national forest in Illinois and the main draw for RV travelers heading to this corner of the state. The town is a practical base for reaching the Garden of the Gods Recreation Area, Pounds Hollow, and the Ohio River bluffs, with grocery stores, fuel, and dump stations available before heading into more remote federal land.
Camping options range from private RV parks with full hookups to primitive federal sites. Bear Branch Campgrounds and Double M Campground serve travelers who want hookups close to town, while Cedar Lake Campground offers a quieter lakeside setting. Dixon Springs State Park, one of several state parks in the Illinois Shawnee Hills, sits along Illinois Route 146 about 10 miles from Golconda and gives visitors an alternative south of Harrisburg.
For travelers routing through the region on I-57, Marion Campground and RV Park works as a stopover roughly an hour west, close to interstate access and services.
Things to do near Harrisburg
The Garden of the Gods Recreation Area is the signature stop. Bluffs feature views of the Shawnee Hills and Garden of the Gods Wilderness, and rock formations carry names such as Camel Rock, Table Rock and Devil's Smokestack. The Observation Trail has some short, steep grades and a few steps, but as a whole is not tiring, though high cliffs in the area call for caution.
Beyond the rock formations, hikers can explore the Garden of the Gods Wilderness backcountry, and paddlers head to nearby lakes and the Ohio River. Hiking to see canyons, waterfalls and rock formations is one of the most popular activities at Dixon Springs State Park, with mountain biking and pond fishing among other top outdoor adventures.
Fall color is a major draw for photographers, and horseback riding is common on Shawnee trails during cooler months.

Southern Illinois is warmer and wetter than the rest of the state. Harrisburg falls under the Cfa Köppen category, a humid subtropical climate with no dry season. April is typically the wettest month, and the air can feel uncomfortably humid during the summer months from June to August.
Spring and fall are the most comfortable windows for RV travel. The best time of year to visit Harrisburg is mid April to mid June and September to October. Spring offers wildflowers and rushing streams in the Shawnee, while autumn brings fall color and fewer insect pests. Weekends around peak foliage fill quickly at Garden of the Gods.
Winter is quiet but usable for hardy campers. Snow in Harrisburg usually begins around December and ends by February, with an annual average of about 8 inches. Some private parks reduce hours, but the Shawnee National Forest keeps key sites open year round.
How to book near Harrisburg
Reservation systems vary by operator. Dixon Springs State Park has a Class B trailer camp area with a sanitary dumping station and electricity available, and reservations can be made at ExploreMoreIL. Reservations are not required, but travelers should make one because there aren't a lot of campsites at the park.
Federal sites in the Shawnee National Forest operate differently. Pharaoh Campground at Garden of the Gods is open year-round on a first-come, first-served basis, with no reservations accepted.
Private parks such as Bear Branch Campgrounds, Double M Campground, Cedar Lake Campground, and Marion Campground and RV Park take direct bookings by phone or website. Reserve hookup sites early for holiday weekends and peak fall color.
What to expect on site
Site type sets expectations. Private parks near Harrisburg generally provide electric, water, and sewer hookups, laundry, and Wi-Fi, while federal sites in the Shawnee are primitive. Pharaoh Campground features 12 campsites, tables, fire grills, toilets, drinking water and trails.
State park hookups are more modest than commercial parks. There are designated RV camping spots at Dixon Springs State Park, some of which also allow tents, and all of the RV campsites have electric hookups. RV campers should know the sites run along a hillside, and leveling can be a real challenge on certain spots, particularly for rigs over 24 feet.
Cell coverage drops quickly once travelers leave town, roads narrow near trailheads, and tree canopy is dense in the wilderness areas. Plan resupply stops in Harrisburg or Golconda before heading in.

Fuel is usually the second-biggest line item after the rental itself, but Harrisburg keeps it reasonable. Gas prices in southern Illinois typically run 10 to 30 cents below the national average, often hovering around $3.10 to $3.40 per gallon. Plan on roughly 8 to 10 miles per gallon (mpg) for a Class A, 10 to 13 mpg for a Class C motorhome, 14 to 18 mpg for a campervan, and 12 to 16 mpg for your tow vehicle pulling a travel trailer. For a typical 4-night Shawnee Forest loop covering about 250 miles, budget around $80 to $130 in fuel. Fill up in Harrisburg or Marion before heading deep into the forest, gas stations get sparse east of Highway 145.
eia.gov/petroleum/gasdiesel/How far ahead should I book a campground near Harrisburg?
Plan ahead and you'll snag the best sites. Illinois state park campgrounds like Cave-in-Rock and Ferne Clyffe take reservations through the Camp.IL reservation system, and weekends from April through October fill fast, especially holiday weekends and mid-October fall color weekends. Most Shawnee National Forest sites including Pharaoh, Oak Point, and Camp Cadiz are first-come, first-served, so arrive Thursday afternoon for a Friday to Sunday stay. Private parks like Shawnee Forest Campground in Vienna take online bookings and often have last-minute availability. Pro tip: if your dates are flexible, target the second week of October for peak Garden of the Gods foliage with smaller crowds than the first weekend.
camp.exploremoreil.com/What are driving conditions like around Harrisburg?
Driving an RV around Harrisburg is refreshingly easy compared to most US destinations. Highways 13, 45, and 145 are flat, well-maintained, two-lane to four-lane roads with light traffic outside of school commute times. Once you head into the Shawnee Hills, expect curvier roads with gentle grades, narrow shoulders on Karbers Ridge Road heading into Garden of the Gods, and the occasional low-clearance bridge, most Class C and smaller motorhomes (under 11 feet tall) clear everything without issue. Watch for deer at dawn and dusk year-round, summer thunderstorms that can drop heavy rain fast, and the rare winter ice storm from December to February. Check Illinois DOT's GettingAroundIllinois map before you roll out for any active road work.
