Hillcrest is a small village in Ogle County in north-central Illinois, sitting on the Flagg Township prairie just east of Rochelle and about 100 miles west of Chicago. The area combines flat farmland with the wooded Rock River corridor to the north and west, giving RV travelers a mix of private resort campgrounds and Illinois state park sites within a short drive.
Close-in private options include King's Camp in nearby Chana, a family-focused property spanning over 90 acres with RV sites, cabins, tent camping, and a swim lake. Lake Louise RV Resort sits on Illinois Highway 2 in Byron with full-hookup sites, a sandy beach on a spring-fed lake, and a pool. Blackhawk Valley Campground occupies wooded acreage along the Kishwaukee River south of Rockford.
For state-managed camping, Lowden State Park sits along the Rock River north of Oregon in Ogle County and is home to the iconic Black Hawk statue, with Class A electric, Class B/S shower-access, and Class D hike-in sites. Franklin Creek State Natural Area Equestrian, in Lee County near Franklin Grove, is a primitive horse-camp option.
Things to do around Hillcrest
The Rock River is the main draw. At Lowden State Park, visitors fish, hike bluff trails, and view the 50-foot concrete statue designed by sculptor Lorado Taft, commonly associated with Chief Black Hawk. Nearby Castle Rock and White Pines Forest state parks add more hiking and river access.
Families staying at Lake Louise RV Resort can swim at the sand beach, use the pool, and fish the lake. Kings Camp has a lake for swimming and fishing, with free paddle boats and kayaks available to guests, a playground, and family activities on most weekends. Blackhawk Valley Campground offers riverside recreation on the Kishwaukee.
Franklin Creek State Natural Area features hiking, seasonal cross-country skiing and snowmobile trails, along with 12 miles of equestrian trails developed and maintained by the Rock River Trail and Horseman's Association, plus a working historic grist mill. Rock Cut State Park near Loves Park adds two lakes and swim beaches within an easy day trip.

We had an amazing experience renting a camper from Catherine! From start to finish, she made the process so easy. The camper was spotless, fully stocked with everything we needed (and then some!), and it made our trip comfortable and stress-free. Catherine was incredibly responsive and always quick to answer any questions we had. It was obvious she put a lot of thought into making sure her guests had a great experience. If you’re looking to rent a camper, we highly recommend Catherine. We wouldn’t hesitate to rent from her again. Thank you for helping make our weekend such a wonderful trip!

How to book campgrounds near Hillcrest
For Illinois state park sites, use the state's ExploreMoreIL reservation system. Reservations at Lowden State Park are taken for the campsites and cabin at ExploreMoreIL, and additional Class B/S campsites without electricity and 8 Class D primitive hike-in-only campsites are also available. Camping permits are collected from park staff upon arrival.
Private resorts are booked directly through their own websites. Lake Louise RV Resort takes daily, monthly, and seasonal reservations. Blackhawk Valley Campground and King's Camp accept bookings through their own reservation systems.
Franklin Creek State Natural Area Equestrian is first-come, first-served with no online reservations available, so plan a backup site during peak weekends and firearm-deer-hunt closure dates.
What to expect on site
Hookup levels vary widely. Lake Louise RV Resort offers full-hookup sites with water, electric, and sewer. King's Camp provides electric and water hookups for RVs alongside drive-in and walk-in sites, with amenities including showers, restrooms, and a dump station. Blackhawk Valley Campground offers hookup sites on wooded terrain along the Kishwaukee River.
Lowden State Park is more rustic. There are 80 Class A campsites which include electricity, a shower building, and a sanitary dumping station for trailers. A summer refreshment stand provides cool drinks, ice, and wood.
Franklin Creek's equestrian campground is primitive, with most sites featuring permanent tie lines, vault toilets, scattered water hydrants, and a dump station, but no showers or electrical hookups. Cell coverage in the rural Ogle and Lee County corridor is uneven, so download maps before leaving I-39.
