The closest public option is Washington County State Recreation Area, southwest of Hoyleton near Nashville, which contains the Shady Rest and Lonely Oaks campgrounds around a lake ringed by hiking trails. About half an hour north, Eldon Hazlet State Recreational Area is a 3,000-acre site on the west shore of Carlyle Lake, a Kaskaskia River impoundment located 3 miles north of Carlyle and 2 miles east of Illinois Route 127 in Clinton County. The site is leased from the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, which built the 26,000-acre lake, and it holds the largest campground in the Illinois state park system. For travelers who prefer full-service private parks close to the interstate, Archway RV Park in Mount Vernon and UcamP Express RV Park round out the local options, giving RV renters a mix of lakefront state sites and easy-access highway stopovers within a short drive of Hoyleton.

Illinois state park sites at Washington County SRA and Eldon Hazlet SRA are booked through the state's ExploreMoreIL system. Eldon Hazlet also keeps walk-up capacity. The campground is divided into reservable and first-come, first-served sections, which helps last-minute RV travelers on weekdays.
