Campgrounds and RV parks near Irvington, IL

Water recreation drives most trips in the area. Fishing at Washington County Lake produces largemouth bass, bluegill, sunfish, crappie, channel catfish, and carp, and a roughly 7-mile trail circles the lake for hikers. Two boat ramps handle non-motorized boats and craft with up to 10 horsepower. Shady Rest is the electric-hookup loop, while Lonely Oaks handles tent campers without hookups. Carlyle Lake, about 30 miles north, opens up a larger menu. Eldon Hazlet State Recreational Area covers roughly 3,000 acres with over 9 miles of hiking trails, three public boat ramps, a sailboat harbor, and a public swimming pool that runs from Memorial Day through Labor Day. Closer to town, Archway RV Park sits within easy reach of Mount Vernon restaurants and shopping, a practical overnight base for families.

Peak camping runs from Memorial Day through Labor Day, when lake-loop sites at Washington County State Recreation Area and Eldon Hazlet fill quickly on weekends. Illinois state-park sites often book weeks out for summer holidays, and cancellations are common enough that waitlist tools are widely used by campers targeting popular loops. Spring brings the wettest weather of the year and the risk of severe thunderstorms across southern Illinois. Lake levels on Carlyle Lake can rise after heavy rain, and some low-lying Corps of Engineers day-use areas around the reservoir close temporarily during flood pools. Fall is a strong shoulder season with cooler nights, lower humidity, and easier reservations, and fishing and hiking remain active into November. Winter access is more limited at state-park loops, though Illini Campground at Eldon Hazlet operates year-round with reservable and first-come sites. Private parks such as Archway RV Park stay open year-round with level, full-hookup pull-through sites accessible directly from the interstate, which makes them a reliable off-season stop.

The area is flat to gently rolling farmland broken by lakes and hardwood pockets. Expect two distinct camping experiences: quiet, wooded state-park loops on the water, and functional interstate RV parks aimed at overnighters and long-haul travelers. State-park sites generally offer electric hookups with 30 and 50 amp service at Eldon Hazlet, gravel pads, picnic tables, fire rings, shower houses, and a central dump station rather than full hookups at each site. The Illini Campground has 328 Class A campsites with 30 and 50 amp electrical hookups and 36 Class C walk-in tent sites, along with a campground store and public swimming pool on site. Shady Rest at Washington County SRA features 30-amp electric sites with a shower building, dump station, and potable water fill at the entrance. Private parks near Mount Vernon lean toward full hookups, laundry, and easy big-rig access. Cell coverage is generally reliable along I-64 and I-57, and thinner inside state-park loops.
