Campgrounds and RV parks near Johnston City, IL

Johnston City sits in Williamson County in far southern Illinois, a short drive from Marion, Carbondale, and the lakes and forests that define the region. RV travelers use it as a base for Crab Orchard National Wildlife Refuge, made up of 44,000 acres with major habitats that include oak-hickory upland forest, bottomland hardwood forest, cropland, grazing units, brushland, prairie, wetlands, and lakes, plus the broader Shawnee National Forest to the south and east. Most RV-friendly campgrounds cluster along Interstate 57 and around the region's larger reservoirs. Four Seasons Campground and Marion Campground and RV Park serve travelers who want full-hookup sites close to town amenities, while EZ Camp - XXXL Storage pairs RV storage with camping for owners passing through. Benton KOA Journey, just north up I-57 near Rend Lake, is a common overnight stop for cross-country trips. For lake camping, Blue Heron Marina and Campground puts sites near the water, giving quick access to boat launches, fishing, and wildlife viewing without leaving the campground.

Federal sites in the area now use the national reservation system. As of August 2023, Crab Orchard Campground is reservation-only via Recreation.gov, a change from its former first-come, first-served operation. The campground sits within the National Wildlife Refuge system, and all vehicles entering Crab Orchard National Wildlife Refuge are required to pay an entrance fee, a valid pass must be displayed, and visitors holding a current Federal Duck Stamp or America the Beautiful Interagency Pass may stop by the visitor center for a free vehicle hang tag. Private parks are booked directly. Four Seasons Campground, Marion Campground and RV Park, EZ Camp - XXXL Storage, and Benton KOA Journey take reservations by phone or through their own websites, with KOA also using its national booking platform. For summer weekends and holiday periods, reserve well in advance and confirm rig-length limits before arrival.
