Camping near La Harpe, Illinois
La Harpe sits in Hancock County in west-central Illinois, within a short drive of the Mississippi River and several state-managed camping areas. The town works as a practical base for RV travelers exploring the region between Macomb, Nauvoo, and Oquawka, with grocery stops and fuel available along US-136.
Most nearby camping is operated by the Illinois Department of Natural Resources. Argyle Lake State Park lies near Colchester, west of Macomb, and covers roughly 1,700 acres around a 93-acre lake, with campgrounds, hiking trails, and boating facilities. Its Twisted Oaks - Argyle Lake State Park campground contains 86 Class A sites with showers and electricity, while Big Oaks offers Class B/E electric-only and Class C vehicle-access sites, and Twin Oaks adds 31 Class D primitive sites.
Closer to the Mississippi, Delabar State Park sits about a mile and a half north of Oquawka on 89 forested acres in Henderson County. Carthage Campground and Nauvoo RV Park round out the private options south and west of La Harpe, and Weinberg-King State Park Fish and Wildlife Area lies to the southeast for quieter, primitive-style camping.
Things to do around La Harpe
Fishing and boating drive most trips in the area. Anglers target bass, catfish, and bluegill in Argyle Lake, while hikers explore trails that wind through the surrounding woods. At Delabar, a boat ramp on the south end provides access to the Mississippi, and anglers can catch channel cat, bass, bluegill, and crappie.
Hiking is low-key but rewarding. Argyle Lake offers foot trails through heavily wooded terrain, and Delabar has about 2 miles of trails with wildlife-viewing opportunities, including deer, raccoon, groundhog, and more than 50 bird species.
Historic Nauvoo, on the Mississippi about 20 miles west, adds walkable historic sites, restored buildings, and river views that pair well with a Nauvoo RV Park stay.

Spring and fall are the strongest windows for RV travel in this part of Illinois. Weather is generally mild, foliage is at its best, and campgrounds are less crowded than in peak summer. Book electric sites at Argyle Lake ahead for weekends from Memorial Day through Labor Day, when the park fills for holidays and the Argyle Antique Gas Engine Show over Labor Day weekend.
Summer is warm and humid, with afternoon thunderstorms common. It is the busiest season for lake and river recreation, and Mississippi River fishing pressure peaks. Insects are active and the area has a tick population, so campers should wear long sleeves, use insect repellent, and check for ticks regularly.
Winter thins the crowds. RV camping at Delabar is offered year-round, though services scale back and freezing temperatures affect water hookups. Fall brings hardwood color through the oak-hickory forests, and hunting seasons may affect access at Weinberg-King State Park Fish and Wildlife Area and other fish and wildlife areas.
How to book campsites near La Harpe
Illinois state park campgrounds use a centralized reservation system. Reservations for Argyle Lake State Park and other IDNR-hosted sites are made through the ExploreMoreIL portal. Campsites can be reserved for a maximum of 14 nights, and reservations must be made at least three days before arrival. Class A electric sites in Twisted Oaks fill first for summer weekends and holidays. Most Illinois campsites can be reserved from May 1 through October 31, and some parks accept reservations year-round.
Delabar operates more informally, with on-site check-in by park staff after you choose a site. Groups of 25 or more are required to register in advance with the site office.
For private options, Carthage Campground and Nauvoo RV Park take direct bookings by phone or their websites. Reserve early for events in Nauvoo, when the small park fills quickly.
What to expect on-site
Expect wooded, low-density campgrounds rather than resort-style parks. Twisted Oaks - Argyle Lake State Park sites include showers and electricity, while Big Oaks and Twin Oaks offer more basic setups. A dump station and shower building serve the park.
Delabar is more rustic. Fifty tent and trailer campsites offer electrical hookups, and a dump station and water filling station are available. The campground has 30-amp electric and water hookups and can accommodate vehicles up to 46 feet. Cell service is inconsistent in the river bottoms and wooded hollows, and Wi-Fi should not be expected at state park sites.
Bring bug spray, potable-water hoses for filling before arrival, and a surge protector for older electric pedestals. Big rigs should confirm interior roads and site length before booking at the smaller state parks.
