Camping near Lebanon, Illinois
Lebanon sits in St. Clair County in Illinois's Metro East, roughly 25 miles east of downtown St. Louis and a short drive from Interstates 64, 55, and 70. The town itself is small and residential, so most RV travelers use it as a launch point for the wider St. Louis metro and the lakes, rivers, and state historic sites of southwestern Illinois.
Campground options in the area cover a broad range. American Legion Freedom Farm offers a veteran-affiliated property with water, electric, and dump-station access. Kaskaskia River Camping & RV Park in New Athens sits directly on the Kaskaskia River with full hookups on level sites. Safari RV Park serves travelers heading toward Scott Air Force Base.
For state-park camping, Horseshoe Lake State Park in Madison County provides 26 primitive tent or trailer sites near a large natural lake, though the campground has been closed at times for causeway work, so confirm status before arriving. The St. Louis NE/I-270/Granite City KOA Journey is the closest KOA to downtown St. Louis, sitting on Old Route 66 about 12 miles from the Gateway Arch.
Things to do around Lebanon
The Gateway Arch, Forest Park museums, the Missouri Botanical Garden, and the City Museum are all within a half-hour drive across the Mississippi. Closer to camp, Cahokia Mounds State Historic Site in Collinsville preserves a UNESCO-listed pre-Columbian earthwork complex, and the Lewis & Clark State Historic Site in Hartford marks the expedition's departure area.
Outdoor options include fishing and boating at Horseshoe Lake, where boat motors up to 50 horsepower are permitted and swimming is not allowed. The Historic Route 66 Chain of Rocks Bridge is walkable and bikeable across the Mississippi. New Athens sits on the Kaskaskia River with river-access fishing directly at the campground. Lebanon itself is home to McKendree University, the oldest college in Illinois.

Peak season for RV travel around Lebanon runs from Memorial Day through Labor Day, when pools, kids' amenities, and full state-park facilities are all operating. The Granite City KOA runs its pool from Memorial Day weekend through Labor Day weekend, and the campground caters to travelers year-round in the shoulder seasons. Horseshoe Lake State Park's campground is open May 1 through September 30 and does not take individual reservations, so summer weekends favor early arrivals for one of the 26 primitive sites.
Spring brings the wettest months of the year, and river levels along the Kaskaskia and Mississippi can rise quickly. Calling ahead in March through May is worthwhile if a specific riverside site matters.
Fall is comfortable and less crowded, with warm days into October and cooler nights. Winter is cold, with regular sub-freezing nights and occasional snow. State-park camping is closed for the winter, but private parks in the area typically offer shoulder-season or limited winter access; confirm status directly with the operator.
How to book
Illinois state-park camping is handled through the ExploreMoreIL reservation system, though Horseshoe Lake State Park itself is walk-in and self-registration only for individual sites, with a maximum stay of 7 days in a 30-day period. Group sites at Horseshoe Lake can be reserved through ExploreMoreIL. Illinois state-park reservations open about 6 months ahead, must be made at least three days before arrival, and holiday weekends (Memorial Day, Labor Day, and Fourth of July when it falls Friday through Monday) require a two-night Friday-Saturday minimum.
The Granite City KOA takes reservations directly through koa.com or by phone. Kaskaskia River Camping & RV Park is operated by the Village of New Athens and takes reservations directly. American Legion Freedom Farm and Safari RV Park take direct bookings by phone.
What to expect on site
Hookup levels vary widely. The Granite City KOA offers full hookups with mostly 50-amp service and a small section of 30-amp, pull-thrus up to 75 feet, Wi-Fi, a swimming pool, playground, laundry, showers, propane, and a jumping pillow; on-the-ground campfires are banned by county ordinance, though off-ground covered fire pits are now allowed. Kaskaskia River Camping & RV Park offers full-hookup sites with river frontage.
Horseshoe Lake State Park is primitive: pit toilets, water hydrants, a dump station, picnic tables and fire rings, but no showers and no electric hookups. American Legion Freedom Farm offers water, electric, and dump-station access on a smaller property. Cell service is generally solid across the Metro East given proximity to St. Louis.
