Livingston is a small village in Madison County, Illinois, sitting just off Interstate 55 roughly midway between St. Louis and Springfield. The location makes it a practical Route 66 corridor stop for RV travelers heading through central Illinois, with several private campgrounds within a short drive of the I-55 exit and a full-service state park under an hour away.
The closest options include Rustic Acres Campgrounds and Lazy Days Campground, both within the immediate Livingston and New Douglas area, followed by Country Bend Campground and Kamper Kompanion RV Park a short drive further along the corridor. Rustic Acres sits four miles east of Interstate 55 at Exit 37 for Livingston and New Douglas, on 47 country acres with two fishing lakes.
For a public-land alternative, Beaver Dam State Park lies southwest of Carlinville in Macoupin County. The 750-acre park is located seven miles southwest of Carlinville in an oak and hickory woodland and offers a variety of recreational opportunities. The park centers on a 59-acre lake and is managed by the Illinois Department of Natural Resources.
Things to do near Livingston
Fishing is the anchor activity in the area. Beaver Dam Lake is stocked with channel catfish, bluegill, crappie, largemouth bass, and redear sunfish. The park also has a boat ramp and shore access. Rustic Acres Campgrounds offers two on-site fishing lakes on its 47-acre property, with campsites tucked among oak and hickory trees.
On land, hiking and biking trails run throughout Beaver Dam State Park, and a free archery range draws visitors along with wildlife watching. The park has more than eight miles of trails that loop around the lake, past the marsh, and through wooded forest.

How to book campsites near Livingston
Illinois state park sites, including those at Beaver Dam State Park, are reserved through the ExploreMoreIL system operated by the Illinois Department of Natural Resources. There are 40 reservable campsites at Beaver Dam, and all others are first come, first served. A rent-a-cabin next to the shower house is also available for reservation through the same ExploreMoreIL website. Youth-group areas require advance reservation.
Private campgrounds around Livingston take bookings directly through their own websites or by phone. Rustic Acres, for example, requires a 50 percent deposit at booking for reservations made 31 or more days out, with the remaining balance charged 30 days before arrival, while reservations made within 30 days require payment in full at booking.
For summer weekends and holidays, reserve well in advance. Popular family resorts near Route 66 fill early, and state-park cancellations can be tracked with third-party alert services.
What to expect on-site
Expect a mix of hookup levels. Private parks near Livingston generally offer full or partial hookups, laundry, and shower buildings. Rustic Acres, now operating as a Jellystone Park, adds a swimming pool, jumping pillow, laser tag, gaga ball, hay rides, foam parties, and two playgrounds, plus themed weekend activities.
Beaver Dam State Park is more rustic. The trailer camping area has electricity at each pad and a sanitary dump station, with a shower building and flush toilets in the center of the area; water is available on the grounds but individual sites do not have water hookups. Tent camping is in a separate area with nearby restrooms and water.
Sites are situated in wooded areas with large oak and hickory trees that provide shade through most of the day. Bring insect protection in summer, keep pets leashed, and plan for gravel or grass pads that can soften after heavy spring rain.
