Campgrounds and RV parks near Makanda, IL

Makanda sits in the Shawnee Hills of southern Illinois, surrounded by state parks, a national wildlife refuge, and the Shawnee National Forest. The village is a short drive south of Carbondale, which serves as the closest full-service town for groceries, fuel, and RV supplies. Most campgrounds within a thirty-minute radius are managed by the Illinois Department of Natural Resources or sit on U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service land, so reservation rules and season lengths vary by site. Giant City State Park anchors the area with 85 Class A electric sites plus a separate Horse Camp - Giant City State Park for equestrian visitors. Little Grassy Lake Campground and Marina sits inside Crab Orchard National Wildlife Refuge and offers lakefront RV sites with electric, water, and sewer hookups. Lake Murphysboro State Park adds another electric trailer loop about thirty minutes west, and Blue Heron Marina and Campground provides waterfront sites on Crab Orchard Lake near Carterville. For a more primitive experience, Trail Of Tears State Forest offers rustic tent and walk-in sites spread across rugged Ozark Hills terrain south of Makanda.

Illinois state park sites, including Giant City State Park, Horse Camp - Giant City State Park, Lake Murphysboro State Park, and Trail Of Tears State Forest, are reserved through the ExploreMoreIL system. Little Grassy Lake Campground and Marina and Blue Heron Marina and Campground sit on Crab Orchard National Wildlife Refuge land but are operated by outside concessionaires and booked directly with them, not through Recreation.gov.
