Campgrounds and RV parks near Marine, IL

Outdoor activity in the area centers on Horseshoe Lake, the second largest natural lake in Illinois. Fishing opportunities exist from boats and from the bank, boat motors of up to 50 horsepower are permitted on the lake, and swimming and jet skiing are not allowed. The site provides numerous hunting programs from September through February, and paved and natural trails support hiking, biking, and wildlife viewing. Beyond the state park, Marine sits within easy driving distance of the Gateway Arch, Cahokia Mounds State Historic Site, and the shops and restaurants of Edwardsville and Collinsville. Families using the St. Louis NE/I-270/Granite City KOA Journey or Safari RV Park can day-trip to the St. Louis Zoo, Forest Park museums, and Six Flags St. Louis without repositioning the rig. Rustic Acres Campgrounds and American Legion Freedom Farm work well for quieter downtime between excursions.

The RV season in this part of Illinois runs primarily from spring through fall. The Horseshoe Lake State Park campground is open from May 1 to September 30, which sets the practical window for combining state-park camping with visits to the broader Metro East. Private parks such as Rustic Acres Campgrounds, Safari RV Park, and the St. Louis NE/I-270/Granite City KOA Journey typically operate on longer or year-round schedules; confirm directly before booking shoulder-season stays. Late spring and early fall are the most comfortable stretches for touring, with warm days and cooler evenings. Midsummer brings heat and high humidity typical of southwestern Illinois, so shaded sites and electric hookups for air conditioning are worth prioritizing. Travelers planning a state-park visit should also note that access to Chouteau Island is closed until approximately October 2026 due to bridge repair, and the campground, the road leading to the campground, picnic shelter 3, and a hiking trail are closed due to an installation project on the causeway. Check current park status with IDNR before finalizing plans.

Expect a mix of amenity levels. Private parks near Marine generally provide full or partial hookups, dump stations, and Wi-Fi, with the St. Louis NE/I-270/Granite City KOA Journey offering the most predictable KOA-standard experience for families new to RV travel. Rustic Acres Campgrounds and Safari RV Park lean toward practical, longer-stay setups. State-park camping is deliberately basic. Primitive, or class C, camping is available from May 1st through Sept 30th, and no showers or electrical hookups are provided. The campground accommodates 26 tent or trailer campsites, and a sanitary dump station, pit toilets, and water hydrants are conveniently located. Quiet-hour enforcement is standard across area campgrounds, and mosquitoes and ticks are common near the lake in summer, so bring repellent.
