Camping near Millstadt, Illinois
Millstadt is a village in St. Clair County in southwestern Illinois, positioned in the Metro East region just across the Mississippi River from St. Louis, Missouri. The location makes it a practical base for RV travelers who want quick access to a major metro area while camping on the Illinois side of the river.
Campground options within a short drive lean toward full-service urban and suburban RV parks rather than remote wilderness sites. Cahokia RV Parque and DraftKings at Casino Queen RV Park sit closest to the metro core, offering hookups near the riverfront and casino district. Safari RV Park and American Legion Freedom Farm provide additional private-park choices in the surrounding area.
For a more traditional state-park experience, Horseshoe Lake State Park is a short drive north in Madison County. The park surrounds one of the largest natural lakes in Illinois, with a small campground open seasonally. Together these options give RV renters a mix of full-hookup convenience and lakeside primitive camping within easy reach of Millstadt.
Things to do near Millstadt
The Metro East and St. Louis area put a wide range of attractions within a short drive of Millstadt. Cahokia Mounds State Historic Site, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, preserves earthworks from the ancient Mississippian culture and sits a short drive from the village. Across the river, the Gateway Arch, the St. Louis Zoo, and the City Museum are family-friendly stops that suit a day trip from any of the nearby RV parks.
Outdoor recreation centers on water and trails. Horseshoe Lake State Park connects to the regional Metro East trail network, which links paved bike routes reaching downtown St. Louis via the Chain of Rocks Bridge. Fishing, bird watching, and picnicking are the main draws on the lake itself.

45° / 25°F 65 mmCold with occasional snow; state park campground closed
The region has a humid continental climate with four distinct seasons. Spring and fall offer the most comfortable conditions for RV travel, with mild days, cooler nights, and lower humidity. Spring is also among the wettest stretches of the year, so travelers should plan for occasional heavy rain and the possibility of severe thunderstorms typical of the Mississippi Valley.
Summer brings heat and humidity, with July and August daytime highs averaging near 90 degrees Fahrenheit and elevated dew points. This is peak camping season for the state park system, so weekends at Horseshoe Lake State Park and demand at private parks near the metro tend to run highest from Memorial Day through Labor Day.
Winters are cold, with January the coldest month, averaging highs in the low 40s Fahrenheit, and occasional snow. The Horseshoe Lake State Park campground closes for the off-season. Private RV parks in the Metro East, including Cahokia RV Parque and DraftKings at Casino Queen RV Park, generally operate year-round, making off-season stays possible for travelers with cold-weather-ready rigs.
How to book campgrounds near Millstadt
Booking approaches vary by campground type. Private RV parks in the Metro East, such as Cahokia RV Parque, DraftKings at Casino Queen RV Park, and Safari RV Park, typically accept reservations directly through their own websites or by phone. Summer weekends, holiday periods, and event dates tied to St. Louis attractions fill fastest, so booking several weeks ahead is advisable.
Horseshoe Lake State Park operates differently. The Illinois Department of Natural Resources manages the site, and its tent and trailer sites have historically been offered on a first-come, first-served basis. Arriving early on Friday improves the odds of securing a site during peak months. American Legion Freedom Farm should be contacted directly to confirm availability and any member or event restrictions.
What to expect at campgrounds near Millstadt
Amenities vary significantly between the private parks and the state park. Metro East RV parks generally provide full hookups with electric, water, and sewer, along with dump stations, Wi-Fi, and laundry. Cahokia RV Parque and DraftKings at Casino Queen RV Park cater primarily to travelers seeking hookups and easy access to nearby attractions.
Horseshoe Lake State Park is a more rustic experience. The campground offers basic facilities including a sanitary dump station and water access, with limited electric service and vault or pit toilets at many sites. Bring drinking water containers and expect a quieter, more primitive stay.
Mosquitoes and biting insects can be persistent near the lake in warm months, and summer thunderstorms move through quickly. Rigs should be leveled with awnings secured, and travelers should monitor local weather alerts during severe-weather season.

Frequently asked questions about campgrounds near Millstadt, IL
How much does it cost to rent an RV in Millstadt, IL?
Good news: RV rental in Millstadt is one of the more affordable ways to explore the St. Louis metro region. Travel trailers typically run $90 to $160 per night, Class C motorhomes around $175 to $275, and luxury Class A coaches $250 to $400. Because hosts on RVezy set their own pricing, you can comfortably find a cheap RV rental in Millstadt by booking midweek, traveling in spring or late fall, and looking for stays of five nights or more, which often unlock weekly discounts. Pro tip: Millstadt sits just 15 miles southeast of downtown St. Louis, so you can score lower nightly rates here than at rentals based in the city while still being a short drive from the Gateway Arch.
enjoyillinois.com/plan-your-trip/places-to-stay/camping-and-rv-parks-in-illinois/Do I need a special license to rent an RV in Millstadt, IL?
For almost every RV rental in Millstadt, your regular driver's license is all you need. Illinois does not require a Commercial Driver's License (CDL) for recreational vehicles used for personal travel, and the vast majority of motorhomes, campervans, and travel trailers on RVezy fall well under any weight thresholds that would trigger a different license class. You'll need to be 25 or older and upload your license through the RVezy platform for quick ID verification. Visiting from abroad? Bring an International Driving Permit (IDP) along with your home license and you're set to roll out for your Millstadt RV trip.

You choose your protection level at checkout (not the host), which covers physical damage to the RV during your trip up to the plan limits. While it isn't traditional auto insurance, it provides meaningful financial protection for renters on every RV rental in Millstadt. Pro tip: If you're a first-time renter heading toward busy I-64 or I-255 near St. Louis, the higher-tier plan is a small upgrade that buys big peace of mind.

Booking is low-risk: RVezy sets the cancellation policy (not individual hosts), and every reservation includes a money-back grace period right after booking so you have time to firm up your plans. Beyond that window, your refund depends on how far out your trip is and whether something like severe weather is in play, which can happen with Midwest thunderstorm season around Millstadt. Review the cancellation terms in the RVezy Help Center before you book, and reach out to RVezy support if your situation changes. Pro tip: Booking early locks in the best Millstadt motorhomes and still leaves you plenty of flexibility.

dnr.illinois.gov/parks/park.eldonhazlet.htmlWhen is the best time to take a Millstadt RV trip?
Late April through mid-June and September through October are the sweet spots for RV camping in Millstadt. Spring brings highs in the 65 to 80°F range with blooming dogwoods, while early fall delivers crisp mornings, 70°F afternoons, and the spectacular fall colors along the Great River Road. July and August are warm and humid (highs 85 to 92°F with classic Midwest thunderstorms), so look for an RV with strong air conditioning. Winter is mild compared to northern Illinois, with January lows around 22°F, and many local campgrounds stay open year-round. Pro tip: Plan your motorhome rental in Millstadt around September weekends to catch the apple harvest at nearby Eckert's Farm in Belleville.
weather.gov/lsx/I've never rented an RV before. Is it really doable?
It's absolutely doable, and Millstadt is a fantastic place for a first-time RV renter to start. Every RVezy host provides a hands-on walkthrough at pickup covering propane, water, slide-outs, dump procedures, and driving tips, so you're never handed the keys and left guessing. The area's flat terrain, gentle Route 158 and 163, and wide rural roads make it easy to get comfortable before tackling busier highways like I-64. If a campervan rental in Millstadt feels less intimidating, filter by Class B on RVezy. Pro tip: Do a slow loop through Millstadt Sportsmen's Club road before merging onto bigger highways, your confidence will jump in 20 minutes.
idot.illinois.gov/travel-information/safe-driving/index.htmlWhat if I break down or have an issue on the road?
You're covered: every RVezy booking includes 24/7 roadside assistance as part of the renter protection plan, so a flat tire, dead battery, or lockout outside Millstadt is just a phone call away. Help is dispatched across the St. Louis metro and southern Illinois region, and RVezy customer support is available before, during, and after your trip. Your host is also typically a quick message away through the RVezy app for questions about the rig's quirks. Pro tip: Save the roadside assistance number to your phone before you leave Millstadt, and snap a photo of the RV's VIN so you have it ready if you ever need it.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailCan I cross state lines or take the RV into Canada or Mexico?
Yes, interstate travel is welcome and easy from Millstadt, which sits right on the Mississippi River border with Missouri, so a quick hop into St. Louis is the most common first stop. Many hosts also allow longer cross-country routes through neighboring Indiana, Kentucky, Tennessee, and Arkansas. Travel into Canada may be allowed with host approval and proper documentation, so message before booking. Travel into Mexico is not permitted on RVezy rentals due to insurance limitations. Pro tip: A classic RV road trip from Millstadt is crossing the Mississippi at the Stan Musial Veterans Memorial Bridge and rolling Route 66 west through Missouri, a couple hundred scenic miles of Americana.
cbp.gov/travel/us-citizens/know-before-you-goWhat kind of fuel mileage should I expect, and how much will gas cost?
Plan smart and fuel is very manageable on a Millstadt RV trip. Travel trailers don't burn fuel themselves but reduce your tow vehicle to 10 to 13 MPG; Class C motorhomes average 8 to 12 MPG, Class A coaches 6 to 10 MPG, and campervans like a Sprinter often hit 16 to 20 MPG. Illinois gas prices typically run a bit higher than Missouri, so many locals fuel up just across the river in Sauget or Cahokia before heading out. Pro tip: For a weekend RV trip from Millstadt to Carlyle Lake and back (about 100 miles round trip), budget roughly $40 to $70 in fuel for most Class C rentals.
eia.gov/petroleum/gasdiesel/How far in advance should I book a campground near Millstadt?
Earlier is better, especially for summer weekends. Illinois State Parks like Eldon Hazlet and Pere Marquette open reservations up to six months in advance through Reserve America (camp.exploremoreil.com), and prime lakefront sites at Carlyle Lake often fill within hours of opening for Memorial Day and Fourth of July. Private parks like the Granite City KOA usually have more availability but still book up two to four weeks out in peak season. Pro tip: For a spontaneous Millstadt RV trip, look midweek or aim for shoulder season (May or September), when you can often roll up at Cahokia RV Parque or KOA the same day and grab a full-hookup site.
camp.exploremoreil.com/What are local driving conditions like around Millstadt?
Driving an RV around Millstadt is refreshingly stress-free. The village sits on gentle rolling farmland with two-lane state routes (158 and 163) that are quiet, well-maintained, and perfect for getting your bearings. The bigger consideration is the St. Louis metro just to the west, where I-64, I-255, and I-70 get busy during weekday rush hours (7 to 9 a.m. and 4 to 6 p.m.), so plan to cross the river outside those windows. Watch for occasional summer thunderstorms with gusty crosswinds, and bridges over the Mississippi can be windier than open road. Pro tip: Avoid downtown St. Louis streets with low rail viaducts; stick to I-64 or I-70 if you're driving anything over 10 feet tall.
idot.illinois.gov/travel-information/road-conditions/index.htmlWhat amenities and hookups can I expect at campgrounds near Millstadt?
You'll find a great mix. Most private parks within 30 miles of Millstadt, including the Granite City KOA and Cahokia RV Parque, offer full hookups (30/50-amp electric, water, sewer), Wi-Fi, showers, and laundry. State park campgrounds like Eldon Hazlet and Pere Marquette typically have electric hookups, potable water fill stations, and dump stations on-site, though sewer at each site is rare. For dumping and freshwater on the road, Cahokia RV Parque often accepts paid dump-and-fill stops even if you're not staying overnight. Pro tip: Always top off freshwater before leaving the campground, the next reliable fill near Millstadt is at the Pilot Travel Center off I-255 in Caseyville.

Expect a full kitchen with fridge, stove, microwave, and basic cookware; a bathroom with toilet and shower (in Class B, C, A, and most travel trailers); sleeping for 2 to 8 depending on floor plan; air conditioning and furnace; and seatbelts for travel passengers. Many Millstadt-area hosts also include a TV, Bluetooth stereo, outdoor camp chairs, and a propane grill. Generators are common on Class C and Class A rigs, which matters for boondocking near Shawnee National Forest. Wi-Fi varies, so confirm with your host. Pro tip: Filter by Sleeps count on RVezy to match your group, family RV trip Millstadt rentals often sleep 6 to 8 comfortably with a bunkhouse layout.
fmcsa.dot.gov/regulationsWhat add-ons and pickup options are available with my rental?
Hosts offer a buffet of useful add-ons that make life easier. Common picks for a Millstadt RV trip include linen and bedding packages ($25 to $75), kitchen kits, portable generators, bike racks, kayak/SUP mounts, propane fills, and outdoor patio mats. Pickup is usually at the host's home in or around Millstadt, Belleville, or Columbia, and many hosts offer delivery within a set radius (often free under 20 miles, then a per-mile rate). Mileage policies vary by listing, with daily caps from 100 miles up to unlimited. Pro tip: Bundle bedding and a kitchen kit if you're flying into St. Louis Lambert International Airport, you can walk on with a carry-on and have a fully stocked rig waiting in Millstadt.
flystl.com/How does payment and the security deposit work on RVezy?

Avoid issues by snapping photos at pickup and drop-off, returning with a full fuel tank, and following the host's mileage and dumping rules. Pro tip: For your first RV rental in Millstadt, IL, choose a host with strong reviews mentioning fast deposit returns, you'll see those highlighted right on the listing.
