Campgrounds near Mount Olive, Illinois
Mount Olive sits in Macoupin County in west-central Illinois, just off Interstate 55 between St. Louis and Springfield. The town is small and primarily rural, but its location on the I-55 corridor makes it a practical staging point for RV travelers exploring central Illinois lakes, state parks, and Route 66 stops.
Nearby RV options include Lazy Days Campground, Rustic Acres Campgrounds, Country Bend Campground, and Kamper Kompanion RV Park, all privately operated and oriented toward trailers and motorhomes with full or partial hookups. The closest public option is Beaver Dam State Park, located in central Macoupin County in an oak and hickory woodland with a 59-acre lake at its center. The state park has 94 single-family campsites for tents, trailers, and RVs, of which 66 have electric hookups, plus 18 tent sites and 1 cabin for rent. Sites are wooded and shaded, and amenities include flush toilets, showers, a dump station, and an on-site full-service restaurant.
Things to do near Mount Olive
The 750-acre Beaver Dam State Park anchors most outdoor activity in the area, with camping, boating, fishing, hiking, biking, archery, hunting, picnicking, and wildlife viewing on offer. The 59-acre lake holds bluegill, largemouth bass (which are stocked periodically), and crappie, along with channel catfish and redear sunfish, and fishing amenities include a boat launch, fish cleaning station, and a store which sells live bait and other fishing equipment. Hiking and biking trails loop through the woods, and the park also has a playground and an archery range. Wildlife watchers may spot deer, wild turkeys, hawks, owls, and the locally distinctive white squirrels sometimes seen in the area. Cross country skiing is also popular here in the winter months. Off-site, Mount Olive lies on historic Route 66, and Springfield's Lincoln sites are roughly an hour north.

Central Illinois has a four-season continental climate, and that drives the camping calendar around Mount Olive. Late spring through early fall is the core RV season. May through September brings warm days, long evenings, and the broadest range of open services at Beaver Dam State Park and nearby private campgrounds.
Summer is the busiest stretch. Reservable sites at Beaver Dam fill quickly on weekends and around holidays, and humidity, thunderstorms, and ticks are all factors to plan around. Spring and fall are quieter, with cooler nights and more midweek availability at both the state park and the nearby private campgrounds. Fall foliage in the oak and hickory woods around the park typically peaks in mid to late October.
Winters are cold and can be snowy and windy. Many private campgrounds reduce hours or close in the off-season, while cross country skiing is also popular here in the winter months when conditions allow. Confirm seasonal opening dates directly with each campground before booking.
How to book campgrounds near Mount Olive
Reservation systems differ between the state park and the private parks. Beaver Dam State Park is run by the Illinois Department of Natural Resources, and reservable campsites and the rent-a-cabin are booked through the ExploreMoreIL reservation website. There are 40 reservable campsites; all others are first-come, first-served, which helps on short-notice midweek trips but is risky on summer weekends. A designated area for youth-group camping, such as Boy or Girl Scouts, features restrooms, water, fire pads, and picnic tables; when youth groups plan to use the area, a reservation is made using the ExploreMoreIL website.
Private campgrounds in the area, including Lazy Days Campground, Rustic Acres Campgrounds, Country Bend Campground, and Kamper Kompanion RV Park, take reservations directly by phone or through their own websites. For peak summer weekends and holiday periods, book reservable state park sites and full-hookup private sites several weeks ahead, and confirm rig length, hookup amperage, and pet policies at the time of booking.
What to expect at campgrounds near Mount Olive
Expect a mix of wooded public camping and smaller private RV parks. At Beaver Dam State Park, sites sit in mature oak and hickory woodland with heavy shade, and each campsite has a table, fire ring and grill. Though the RV sites do not include water or sewer hookups, electric hookups of 15/20/30/50 amps are available, and the trailer camping area has a sanitary dump station, a shower building with flush toilets in the center, and water available in common areas. A full-service restaurant operates within the park. Beaver Dam State Park is pet-friendly, but the pets must be kept on a leash and under the owner's control, and you are also required to clean up after your pets. Private parks closer to Mount Olive lean toward full or partial hookups, on-site laundry, and fishing ponds. Cell coverage is generally usable along the I-55 corridor but can be spotty within wooded park interiors.
