Campgrounds near Nashville, Illinois
Nashville sits in Washington County in southern Illinois, roughly an hour southeast of St. Louis. The town works well as a base for RV travelers because several state-managed recreation areas with developed campgrounds sit within a short drive, and Interstate 64 provides easy east-west access.
The closest options are inside Washington County State Recreation Area, located four miles south of Nashville, which surrounds a 248-acre lake and includes camping loops such as Shady Rest and Lonely Oaks. A short drive east puts RVers on Carlyle Lake, where Eldon Hazlet State Recreational Area is a 3,000-acre site on the western shore, about 3 miles north of Carlyle in Clinton County.
Further afield, Pyramid State Recreation Area to the south is one of the largest state parks in Illinois and centers on former surface-mine lakes, while the World Shooting and Recreational Complex near Sparta caters to shooting-sports travelers and includes RV sites. Together, these parks give families a mix of lakefront, forested, and activity-focused camping within about an hour of Nashville.
Things to do near Nashville, Illinois
Water activities dominate the area. Carlyle Lake covers roughly 26,000 acres and is the largest manmade lake in Illinois, supporting boating, sailboat regattas held almost every summer weekend, and fishing for a wide range of species. Eldon Hazlet State Recreational Area draws visitors to camp, boat, fish, hunt, picnic, birdwatch, and hike more than 9 miles of trails, and its Illini Campground sits along the lake shoreline.
On land, Pyramid State Recreation Area adds trails and multiple fishing lakes on reclaimed mine land. Families will find a public swimming pool behind the campground store at Eldon Hazlet, plus playgrounds and shoreline access. The World Shooting and Recreational Complex near Sparta is a destination for trap, skeet, sporting clays, and archery, and hosts national-level events.

Peak camping season runs from Memorial Day through Labor Day, when the lakes are warm, boats are on the water, and family demand is highest. The public swimming pool at Eldon Hazlet operates during the summer season, and sailboat regattas run on many summer weekends at Carlyle Lake. Reservable sites at the larger parks fill quickly on holiday weekends, so booking well in advance is important.
Spring and fall are quieter and often more comfortable for RV travel. Spring brings green-up, wildflowers, and active crappie and white bass fishing, though rain and thunderstorms are common and April is typically the wettest month. Fall delivers cooler nights, lower humidity, and hunting opportunities on the state areas that permit it.
Winter camping is possible at some sites but expect cold nights, occasional snow or ice, and reduced services. Illini Campground at Eldon Hazlet operates year-round, but the pool, store hours, and some amenities scale back outside the main season. At Washington County SRA the shower building is open only from April through October.
Reserving a site near Nashville
Illinois state park campgrounds, including Washington County SRA, Eldon Hazlet, and Pyramid, use the state's official ExploreMoreIL booking platform, which handles individual sites, group sites, and shelters. Campsites can be reserved up to six months in advance and must be booked at least three days before arrival, with a maximum stay of 14 nights within any 30-day period. Memorial Day, Labor Day, and qualifying Fourth of July weekends carry a two-night minimum.
Many Illinois state parks maintain both reservable and first-come, first-served loops, so walk-up sites are often available midweek. For holiday weekends and summer Saturdays, booking online several weeks ahead is the safer approach, especially for larger rigs needing 50-amp service.
What to expect on site
At the larger state parks, expect gravel pads on most Class A loops, with 30- and 50-amp electric service standard. Sites are generally spacious and shaded, and main campground roads are typically paved. Water fill points and dump stations are located centrally rather than at each site, so plan tank management accordingly.
Eldon Hazlet's Illini Campground offers 328 Class A electric sites plus walk-in tent sites, shower buildings, privy toilets, a playground, a camp store stocking groceries, ice, firewood, and bait during the main season, and a public laundry room. Cell service is generally usable across most loops but can be spotty near the water.
Shady Rest and Lonely Oaks at Washington County SRA offer a quieter, more rustic feel with fewer amenities, better suited to travelers who want lake access without the crowds of Carlyle.
