Campgrounds near New Baden, Illinois
New Baden sits in Clinton County in Metro East Illinois, roughly 35 miles east of St. Louis. The area gives RV travelers quick access to Carlyle Lake, a large Kaskaskia River impoundment, along with several Illinois Department of Natural Resources sites and municipal RV parks within a short drive.
Eldon Hazlet State Recreation Area, on the west shore of Carlyle Lake, anchors the closest state-park camping. Its Illini Campground offers 328 Class A electric sites with 30 and 50 amp hookups plus 36 Class C walk-in tent sites and cottages. Horseshoe Lake State Park in Madison County normally adds primitive lakeside camping closer to the St. Louis metro, but the campground and its access road are currently closed for a causeway installation project. Confirm status before planning a stop.
Smaller options round out the mix. American Legion Freedom Farm and Kaskaskia River Camping & RV Park give travelers hookups closer to town, while the World Shooting and Recreational Complex near Sparta offers more than a thousand sites on a former strip-mine reclaimed as an IDNR facility.
Things to do near New Baden
Water recreation is the main draw. Carlyle Lake supports fishing for white bass, channel catfish, crappie, largemouth bass, bluegill, and buffalo, and the Allen Branch area inside Eldon Hazlet offers an accessible fishing pier along with fish cleaning stations at Apache and Allen Branch boat ramps. Illini Pond, a 4-acre pond across from the campground store, provides easy shoreline fishing.
On land, Eldon Hazlet has more than nine miles of trails, including the 3-mile Cherokee Trail, the Pawnee Trail, and the Kaskaskian Trail, plus a public swimming pool behind the campground store.
Shooting sports travelers can visit the World Shooting and Recreational Complex, which hosts the Amateur Trapshooting Association's Grand American Trapshooting Championships. Historic river towns and the St. Louis metro are within an easy day trip.

Spring and fall are cooler and quieter. Illini Campground at Eldon Hazlet operates year-round, though many surrounding facilities scale back after Labor Day. Horseshoe Lake State Park's campground is normally open May 1 through September 30, but the campground, the road leading to it, and the hiking trail are closed for a causeway installation project, with no access to Chouteau Island expected until approximately October 2026.

How to book a campground near New Baden
Illinois state park campsites, including Eldon Hazlet's Illini Campground, are reserved online through the ExploreMoreIL system operated by IDNR. A non-refundable reservation fee applies, and campers should review current stay-length rules on the reservation portal before booking.
Some IDNR sites still operate without online reservations. Horseshoe Lake State Park does not take camping reservations even when the campground is open; however, the campground is presently closed due to causeway work, so it is not a bookable option at this time.
Kaskaskia River Camping & RV Park and American Legion Freedom Farm accept bookings directly through the operator. For the World Shooting and Recreational Complex, contact the complex directly to confirm availability and site assignment.
What to expect on arrival
Sites at Eldon Hazlet's Illini Campground are generally spacious, with many within easy reach of the Carlyle Lake shoreline, which the campground follows for nearly a mile and a half. Amenities include a dump station at the entrance, water fill stations, shower houses, and a 2,000-square-foot campground store stocking groceries, camping and fishing supplies, live bait, ice, and firewood. Seven Class A sites are wheelchair accessible.
Horseshoe Lake State Park, when open, is more rustic, with 26 tent or trailer sites, pit toilets, water hydrants, and a dump station, but no electric hookups.
The World Shooting and Recreational Complex has open, mostly treeless terrain across more than a thousand sites with a mix of full hookups and electric only, a shower house with individual stalls, an on-site restaurant, and fishing lakes.
