Campgrounds and RV parks near Newton, IL

Newton sits in Jasper County in southeastern Illinois, roughly halfway between Effingham and Vincennes, Indiana. The town serves as a practical base for RV travelers exploring the Embarras River valley, with Sam Parr State Fish and Wildlife Area about three miles northeast and a cluster of Illinois state parks within an hour's drive. The surrounding region blends rolling wooded hills, small reservoirs, and working farmland. Public camping is concentrated at Illinois Department of Natural Resources sites, most of which offer Class A or Class B electric sites suitable for larger rigs. Private options fill in the gaps along the Interstate 70 corridor to the north and near Lake Sara to the west. Campgrounds within reach include Casey KOA off Interstate 70, Fox Ridge State Park south of Charleston, the Horse Camp at Red Hills State Park near Sumner, Hickory Holler Campground, and Camp Lakewood Campground. Options range from full-hookup private parks to primitive equestrian sites, so trip planning depends on rig size, hookup needs, and whether reservations are required.

Illinois state park campgrounds, including Fox Ridge and Red Hills, take reservations through the ExploreMoreIL online system operated by the Illinois Department of Natural Resources. Reservable sites can be booked in advance, while a portion of sites at most parks remain first-come, first-served. At Sam Parr, only the first 10 of 33 sites accept reservations; the rest are walk-in. Private campgrounds such as Casey KOA, Hickory Holler Campground, and Camp Lakewood Campground handle their own reservations directly by phone or through their websites. Weekends from Memorial Day through Labor Day fill fastest, especially at electric sites and near lake access. For equestrian trips, the Horse Camp at Red Hills State Park has only eight designated sites, so calling the park office ahead of a weekend is recommended.
