Campgrounds and RV parks near Odin, IL

Water recreation dominates the area. Carlyle Lake, accessed through Eldon Hazlet State Recreation Area, is the largest lake in Illinois and offers three free public boat ramps, a 40-acre harbor, and fishing for white bass, channel catfish, crappie, and largemouth bass among more than 30 species. Over 9 miles of hiking trails wind through oak-hickory forest, and hunting seasons include archery deer, dove, and upland game. Stephen A. Forbes State Recreation Area is centered on a lake ringed by shady oaks. Activities include swimming at sandy Rocky Point Beach, hiking nature trails, water skiing, and fishing for largemouth bass, bluegill, and crappie. Families staying at the Illini Campground can also use the on-site public swimming pool during the warm months.

The main state park campgrounds around Odin operate on extended seasons. The Illini Campground at Eldon Hazlet is open year-round, and Archway RV Park is likewise open year-round and sits just off I-57 and I-64 for winter travelers. Private RV parks in the region generally stay open through the shoulder seasons. Spring brings the wettest stretch of the year and occasional severe thunderstorms typical of the Midwest. Summer is peak season: weekends draw heavy use on Carlyle Lake, the Eldon Hazlet swimming pool operates from Memorial Day through Labor Day, and weekend sites fill quickly at both lakes. Fall offers cooler temperatures, lower humidity, and strong fishing. Winter camping is possible at year-round parks, but expect freezing overnight lows and reduced services. Oak Ridge Campground reopened in mid-2025 after a major bridge and roads project, so travelers should confirm current gate hours and hookup availability before arriving off-season.

Illini Campground at Eldon Hazlet has 328 Class A sites with 30 and 50 amp electric hookups, three shower buildings, privy toilets, a dump station, and a 2,000-square-foot campground store stocking groceries, camping and fishing supplies, live bait, ice, and firewood, plus a public laundry, playgrounds, basketball, and sand volleyball. Sites are generally spacious and shaded with gravel pads, and the campground occupies almost 1.5 miles of Carlyle Lake shoreline. Oak Ridge Campground offers 115 shaded electric sites with water and a shower building, stairways and a boat dock for lake access, and a 120-foot floating walkway to the marina. Recent infrastructure work replaced the campground access bridge and resurfaced park roads. Archway RV Park runs level, full-hookup pull-through sites suitable for big rigs, with a dog park, playground, laundry, and on-site propane.
