Camping near Palestine, Illinois
Palestine is a small village in Crawford County in southeastern Illinois, set along the Wabash River near the Indiana border. The area sits within the Wabash Valley, a mix of farmland, hardwood timber, and small lakes, and gives RV travelers a quiet base for exploring both Illinois and western Indiana.
Campground options within roughly an hour of town range from private RV parks to state and county recreation areas. Hickory Holler Campground and New Vision RV Park LLC offer full-hookup style stays close to Palestine, while Plainview - Lincoln Trail State Park sits just west of Illinois Route 1, about two miles south of Marshall in Clark County, a short drive north. To the east across the state line, Sullivan County Park & Lake and Prairie Creek Park add lake and pond-side sites in Indiana's Wabash Valley.
Most destinations in this corridor are drive-in friendly for Class C rentals and travel trailers, with two-lane state highways connecting the campgrounds. Larger service towns such as Robinson, Illinois, and Vincennes, Indiana, sit within easy reach for groceries, propane, and dump stations.
Things to do near Palestine
Water recreation drives most trips in this area. Lincoln Trail Lake at the state park covers 146 acres, supports fishing and boating with outboard motors limited to 10 horsepower, and holds bass, crappie, and catfish. Sullivan County Park & Lake has a 461-acre lake stocked with hybrid saugeye, walleye, and bluegill, while Prairie Creek Park adjoins a 13.4-acre lake and a smaller pond holding channel catfish, largemouth bass, bluegill, and crappie.
Hiking is low-key and family friendly, with wooded loop trails through oak-hickory and beech forest at the state park. History-minded travelers can visit Palestine's historic downtown and George Rogers Clark National Historical Park in nearby Vincennes.
Back at camp, most sites in the region are wooded and well suited to bikes, campfires, and stargazing.

Spring and fall are the most comfortable stretches for RV travel. April and May bring greening woods, wildflowers, and steady rain, while September and October deliver cool nights, lower humidity, and hardwood color through the Wabash Valley. Fishing pressure eases and mosquitoes thin out after the first cool snap.
Winter is cold, with occasional snow and hard freezes. Many Illinois state park campgrounds remain open year round with reduced services, meaning water may be shut off at spigots and showers are closed between November and May at Lincoln Trail, though electric sites often stay available. What to expect at Palestine campgrounds
Roads into Palestine are rural two-lanes with light traffic. Fuel and groceries are easiest in Robinson, Illinois, or across the river in Vincennes, Indiana. Cell coverage is generally reliable in town and along main highways but can drop in wooded park interiors.
Both Lincoln Trail State Park campgrounds offer electricity, showers, tables, fireblocks, playground equipment, water, toilet facilities, and a sanitary dumping station. Prairie Creek Park has electric hookups for RVs, mostly 30 amp with a couple of 50 amp sites, and Sullivan County Park & Lake offers RV sites with up to 50-amp electrical hookups and bathhouse access.
Wildlife includes white-tailed deer, wild turkey, raccoons, and a heavy songbird population. Ticks and chiggers are active from late spring through early fall, so pack repellent, and store food securely.
