Campgrounds near Pinckneyville
Pinckneyville sits in Perry County, southern Illinois, and functions as a practical base for state-park RV camping in the region. The largest option next door is Pyramid State Recreation Area, an Illinois Department of Natural Resources site that spans 19,701 acres of forested hills, ponds, and lakes on the footprint of former coal-mine land, making it the largest state recreation area in Illinois.
The surrounding area adds three more state-run choices within about a 45-minute drive. Washington County State Recreation Area, near Nashville, holds two of the closest campgrounds to Pinckneyville: Shady Rest - Washington County State Recreation Area, which offers electric hookups geared to trailers and RVs, and Lonely Oaks - Washington County State Recreation Area, a non-electric tent-focused loop. Lake Murphysboro State Park, roughly an hour south near Murphysboro, wraps a star-shaped 145-acre lake with 1,022 acres of rolling hills and woods.
For a smaller, private-style stay, Lake Campalot sits closer to town. Together these five options cover the range from primitive first-come sites to reservable electric loops.
Things to do around Pinckneyville
Fishing drives most trips here. Pyramid State Recreation Area contains more than 500 acres of water across dozens of lakes, ranging in size from about 0.1 acres up to the 276-acre Super Lake, and is known for largemouth bass and bluegill, with crappie, catfish, and other panfish in some lakes. All lakes are treated as no-wake zones, so kayaks and canoes are common.
Trails give the area its other main draw. Pyramid holds about 16.5 miles of foot, horse, and mountain-bike trails through wooded hills and past hike-in lakes. Lake Murphysboro State Park adds a designated three-mile hiking route with several offshoots, plus patches of native wild orchids in wooded areas.
Washington County State Recreation Area rings its lake with a perimeter trail, offers fishing from a large dock, and reviewers report catching bass from shore.

Spring and fall are the strongest windows for RV travel in this part of Illinois. Daytime highs are mild, humidity is lower than midsummer, and the hardwoods around Lake Murphysboro and Pyramid put on a strong fall color show. Spring is also the wettest stretch of the year, with May the single wettest month on the Pinckneyville climate normals, so campers should plan for muddy access roads at primitive sites.
Summer brings hot, humid days with highs commonly in the mid-to-upper 80s Fahrenheit. Lake use peaks in June through August, and shaded electric sites at Shady Rest and Lake Murphysboro fill on weekends. Thunderstorms are frequent, and the shower building at Washington County SRA operates April 1 through October 31.
Winter camping is possible but stripped down. Water is typically shut off at Pyramid during cold months, snowfall averages under nine inches for the year but does occur, and reduced staffing means fewer amenities.
How to book near Pinckneyville
Illinois state parks in this area use the state's ExploreMoreIL reservation system. Washington County State Recreation Area, including Shady Rest and Lonely Oaks, takes reservations through ExploreMoreIL, and Lake Murphysboro State Park also books through the same platform. All campers at Lake Murphysboro must still obtain a permit from the site office on arrival.
Pyramid State Recreation Area works differently. Its Class C camping areas are first-come, first-served, with no online or phone reservations, so arriving early on Friday during peak weekends matters. There are no electrical hookups at Pyramid, but water and a trailer dump station are located near the site office.
For accessible sites at Washington County SRA, designated campsites can be reserved on ExploreMoreIL at least three days before arrival.
What to expect on-site
Expect basic, well-kept state-park infrastructure rather than resort amenities. At Pyramid, sites have gravel pads, fire grills, and picnic tables, with no hookups and pit toilets near many picnic and camping areas. Rigs should carry leveling blocks because the terrain is rolling and pads vary.
Washington County SRA is the more RV-friendly stop nearby. Shady Rest offers 30-amp electric sites, a shower building open April through October, and a potable water fill and dump station at the campground entrance. Reviewers report back-in sites that can accommodate rigs in the 40-foot range. Lonely Oaks and Little Bears are non-electric loops geared to tents.
Cell service is inconsistent across the region, so download maps ahead of arrival. Pets are allowed at these state parks on a leash.

rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Pinckneyville,%20IllinoisDo I need a special license to rent an RV in Pinckneyville?
A regular Illinois or out-of-state driver's license is all you need to rent an RV in Pinckneyville. No Commercial Driver's License (CDL) or special RV endorsement is required for any motorhome or trailer you'll find on RVezy, including larger Class A coaches. Approved drivers are generally required to be at least 25 years old, and RVezy verifies your ID through the platform during booking, so there's no paperwork to mail or notarize. Visiting from abroad? Bring your home-country license plus an International Driving Permit from your local auto association. Once that's set, you're cleared to head straight to Pyramid State Recreation Area for your first night.

You're covered from the moment you book. help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailWhat is the cancellation policy if my Pinckneyville plans change?
Booking is low-risk. RVezy sets the cancellation policy for every rental (not the individual host), and refund amounts depend on how far you are from your trip start date when you cancel. If a host cancels on you, RVezy refunds you in full or helps you rebook with travel credits. The full policy is shown on the RVezy website before you confirm payment, so you can lock in that perfect motorhome rental in Pinckneyville for the Du Quoin State Fair without committing blindly.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360037736674-Understanding-the-cancellation-policy-for-guestsCan I bring my dog on a Pinckneyville RV rental?
Yes, and plenty of hosts welcome four-legged co-pilots. To find a pet-friendly RV rental in Pinckneyville, toggle the Pet-Friendly filter on RVezy and message the host to confirm any deposit or cleaning fee. Once you've got your rig, your dog has acres to roam: Pyramid State Recreation Area (the largest state park in Illinois) allows leashed pets on its trail system, and Rend Lake's North Sandusky Campground is also dog-friendly with shaded loops perfect for evening walks. Pack a tie-out, a collapsible water bowl, and proof of rabies vaccination. Summer pavement in Perry County gets hot, so plan trail time for early morning or evening.
dnr.illinois.gov/parks/park.pyramid.htmlCan the RV be delivered to my campground in Pinckneyville?
Yes, and it's the easiest way to start your trip. Many RVezy hosts offer RV delivery in Pinckneyville and the surrounding Perry County area, meaning they'll tow or drive the RV to Pyramid State Recreation Area, Rend Lake's Sandusky Campground, your private property, or the Du Quoin State Fairgrounds, then level it, hook up water and power, and walk you through every system. That makes delivery a game-changer for a first time renting an RV. To find it, filter listings by Delivery and review the host's per-mile fee. Many hosts offer free delivery within a short radius of Pinckneyville with a modest mileage charge beyond that.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Pinckneyville,%20IllinoisHow does mileage work, and how far can I drive on a Pinckneyville RV trip?
You've got real flexibility. Each host sets their own mileage policy: many include 100 to 150 free miles per night, and some offer an RV rental with unlimited mileage, which is ideal for a bigger Pinckneyville RV trip. Extra miles typically run $0.30 to $0.50 each, and you can pre-purchase a mileage package at booking to lock in a lower rate. From Pinckneyville, Carbondale is about 30 miles south, St. Louis sits roughly 75 miles northwest, and Shawnee National Forest's Garden of the Gods is around 100 miles southeast. If you're stationing at one campground, choose a low-mileage listing and save serious cash.
fs.usda.gov/shawneeWhat are the best campgrounds near Pinckneyville, IL?
You're spoiled for choice. The best campgrounds near Pinckneyville include Pyramid State Recreation Area, the largest state park in Illinois with electric hookup sites, a dump station, and dozens of fishing lakes; Washington County State Recreation Area in Nashville, about 19 miles north, with quiet wooded loops around a sizable lake; Lake Campalot near Percy, a year-round private park with full hookups, laundry, and pull-throughs; Rend Lake's North Sandusky and South Sandusky Campgrounds about 30 miles southeast, run by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers with paved pads and 50-amp service; and Du Quoin State Fairgrounds Campground, about 12 miles east, ideal during fair season. Book Rend Lake sites early as summer weekends fill months out.
dnr.illinois.gov/parks/park.pyramid.htmlWhen is the best time to visit Pinckneyville in an RV?
Late April through mid-June and all of September into late October are the sweet spots for RV camping in Pinckneyville. Spring brings highs in the 70s, blooming dogwoods at Pyramid State Recreation Area, and great fishing at Rend Lake. Fall delivers crisp 60-to-75-degree days, fewer mosquitos, and beautiful hardwood color through Shawnee country. Summers are hot and humid with July highs near 88F and sticky nights, so you'll want a rig with strong air conditioning. Winters can dip into the 20s with occasional snow, but plenty of hosts rent year-round for hunters and Du Quoin event-goers. Book early September for the Du Quoin State Fair tail end and great tailgating weather.
weather.gov/pah/I've never rented an RV before. Will I be okay driving one around Pinckneyville?
You'll do great, especially here. Pinckneyville is one of the friendlier places in Illinois for a first time renting an RV: roads like IL-13, IL-127, and IL-154 are flat, wide, and lightly trafficked compared to Chicago or St. Louis. Every RVezy host gives you a hands-on orientation at pickup, walking you through the generator, slides, water systems, and backing up. You can message the host with questions before booking, and RVezy support is available 24/7 during your trip. Do a slow loop through the Pyramid State Recreation Area entrance road to get comfortable with the rig's width before heading to your site.
idot.illinois.gov/What happens if something goes wrong with the RV during my trip?
You're not stranded. Every RVezy booking includes 24/7 roadside assistance as part of the protection plan, covering flat tires, dead batteries, lockouts, fuel delivery, and towing if needed. If a slide-out jams in Tamaroa or the awning won't retract at Rend Lake, your first call is your host (most reply within minutes since they know their rig), and your second is RVezy support. For medical or safety emergencies, dial 911. Snap a quick walkaround video at pickup so any pre-existing nicks are documented, which makes the security deposit return smooth and fast.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailCan I take my Pinckneyville RV rental on a longer road trip across state lines?
Yes, an RV road trip from Pinckneyville is encouraged, and crossing state lines into Missouri, Kentucky, Indiana, or Tennessee is covered by your RVezy protection plan within the U.S. Just confirm your route with the host so they know your travel plan. Popular runs include St. Louis and the Gateway Arch (about 75 miles), Mammoth Cave National Park in Kentucky (around 200 miles), Memphis (roughly 240 miles via I-57 to I-55), and Nashville (about 300 miles). Travel into Mexico is not permitted on RVezy rentals, and Canada trips need explicit host approval. The Great River Road north along the Mississippi from Chester to Alton is a stunning 2-day loop right out your door.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039340074-Insurance-coverage-validityWhat kind of fuel mileage should I expect, and what's gas like in Pinckneyville?
Budgeting is straightforward. Campervan rentals in Pinckneyville (Class B) typically get 18 to 22 mpg, Class C motorhomes average 10 to 14 mpg, Class A coaches run 7 to 10 mpg, and trucks pulling travel trailers land around 10 to 13 mpg. Gas in Perry County often runs a bit cheaper than the Illinois state average, with stations clustered along IL-127 and US-51. A weekend loop of 250 miles in a Class C costs roughly $70 to $100 in fuel at current prices. Fill up in Pinckneyville or Du Quoin before heading north, as prices typically jump once you cross into the St. Louis metro.
eia.gov/petroleum/gasdiesel/How far in advance should I reserve a campsite near Pinckneyville?
Earlier is better, but you've still got options. Illinois state park sites at Pyramid State Recreation Area and Washington County book through the state's ExploreMoreIL reservation system and open six months out, with summer weekends often gone within days. U.S. Army Corps of Engineers sites at Rend Lake (North Sandusky, South Sandusky, Gun Creek) book through Recreation.gov on a similar six-month window and are the most competitive. Private parks like Lake Campalot in Percy are more flexible and can often accommodate a few days out. If your dates are locked, set a Recreation.gov campsite alert; cancellations pop up regularly two to three weeks before holiday weekends.
recreation.gov/What are driving conditions like around Pinckneyville?
Driving here is refreshingly low-stress. Pinckneyville sits in flat-to-gently-rolling Southern Illinois farmland, so there are no mountain passes or steep grades to worry about in your RV. The main routes (IL-13, IL-127, IL-154, and US-51) are two-lane highways with wide shoulders and light traffic outside the Du Quoin State Fair rush in late August. Watch for farm equipment in spring and fall, and deer at dawn and dusk, especially near Pyramid State Park. Summer thunderstorms can pack strong crosswinds, so check the National Weather Service Paducah office before you roll. Avoid driving a tall rig on rural backroads after heavy rain, as a few low-lying spots can flood briefly along the Beaucoup Creek bottoms.
weather.gov/pah/What amenities will I find at campgrounds near Pinckneyville?
You'll find a great mix. At Pyramid State Recreation Area, expect Class A sites with 30-amp electric, vault and flush toilets, drinking water spigots, and a free dump station, with no sewer hookups at individual sites. Rend Lake's Corps of Engineers campgrounds level up with 50-amp electric, water hookups at the site, dump stations, hot showers, and a few full-hookup loops at South Sandusky. Lake Campalot near Percy offers full hookups and laundry. To top off fresh water before heading out, several Pinckneyville-area stops accommodate RVs. Carry a 25-foot drinking water hose and a 30-to-50-amp adapter to fit any site you book.
recreation.gov/What's inside a typical RV rental in Pinckneyville?
More comfort than you'd expect. A typical motorhome rental in Pinckneyville comes fully equipped: queen or king bed plus convertible dinette and sofa sleepers (most rigs sleep 4 to 8), a full kitchen with fridge/freezer, three-burner propane stove, microwave, and sink, an enclosed bathroom with toilet and shower, climate control with roof-mounted AC and propane furnace, and seatbelted passenger seats for safe travel. Many hosts also include a generator, outdoor speakers, TV, and Wi-Fi hotspots, which is handy since rural Perry County cell coverage can dip. Linens, kitchenware, and camp chairs are commonly included or offered as low-cost add-ons. Confirm the number of generator hours included per day, which matters for boondocking at Pyramid's primitive loops.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Pinckneyville,%20IllinoisWhat add-ons and pickup options can I choose for my Pinckneyville rental?
You can customize your trip nicely. Common RVezy add-ons in Pinckneyville include bedding and linens, kitchen kits, generators, portable grills, bike racks, camping chairs, and a sani-dump service so you don't have to empty tanks yourself. Pricing varies by host, but most add-ons range from $10 to $75 per item or trip. Pickup is typically at the host's home in or near Pinckneyville, Du Quoin, or Carbondale, with return at the same spot, though many hosts offer RV delivery in Pinckneyville for a per-mile fee. Mileage packages can also be added at checkout. Bundling delivery, setup, and a sani-dump turns your rental into a truly hands-off vacation.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Pinckneyville,%20IllinoisHow does payment and the security deposit work on RVezy?
It's straightforward and secure. When you book an RV rental in Pinckneyville, you pay through RVezy's encrypted checkout using credit or debit, with no cash or off-platform payments, which keeps your protection plan valid. The security deposit is a temporary hold on your card (not a charge) and is separate from your booking payment. The amount varies by rig value and is released after your trip once the host confirms the RV came back in good shape, tanks were handled per the agreement, and you're under your mileage cap. Do a video walkaround at pickup and dropoff, refuel to the pickup level, and message the host the moment anything unexpected happens.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360038106214-How-the-security-deposit-worksCan I rent an RV in Pinckneyville for the Du Quoin State Fair or other local events?
Yes, and it's one of the best ways to enjoy them. Many Pinckneyville hosts on RVezy specialize in event rentals for the Du Quoin State Fair (late August), the World Trotting Derby, Street Machine Nationals weekends, and Pyramid State Park hunting seasons. Hosts can often deliver directly to the Du Quoin State Fairgrounds RV camping area (about 12 miles east), set you up with power and water, and pick the rig back up when you leave, so you skip parking hassles, late-night drives home, and pricey hotels. Book event-week rentals 3 to 6 months ahead, as the best Pinckneyville rigs go fast for fair week.
