Campgrounds and RV parks near Prairie du Rocher, IL

History drives most trips here. Fort Kaskaskia SHS preserves the earthwork remains of a French-era fort above the Mississippi, with a scenic overlook, Garrison Hill Cemetery, and a bluff-base path to the Pierre Menard Home State Historic Site. The site is part of the Lewis and Clark National Historic Trail. Outdoor recreation centers on water and woods. Randolph County SRA supports fishing, boating, hiking, hunting, and equestrian riding on more than 11 miles of trails, with a 65-acre lake stocked with channel catfish, bluegill, walleye, saugeye, largemouth bass, and rainbow trout. Hawn State Park is known for the nearly 10-mile Whispering Pine Trail, sandstone canyons, and sand-bottom streams that draw hikers and backpackers year-round.

Spring and fall are the most comfortable windows for RV travel in this part of southern Illinois. May is the wettest month at nearby Chester, averaging about 5.5 inches of rain, so low-lying river bottoms and unpaved campground roads can get soft. Wildflower and songbird activity peak in April and May. Summer is hot and humid, with July highs near 90°F and frequent afternoon thunderstorms. Randolph County SRA's shaded lakeside sites and Hawn's pine canopy help take the edge off. Mosquitoes and river-bottom insects are heaviest from June through August. This is also peak reservation season on weekends. Fall brings cooler nights and drier conditions through October, with strong color in the bluff forests. Winter is cold but generally light on snow for the region. Hawn State Park keeps sites 1 to 9 open year-round while sites 10 to 50 are open April through October and used only for overflow from November through March. Water and showers at Hawn run April 1 through October 31, with a frost-free spigot in the off-season.

These are working state and municipal campgrounds rather than resort parks. Expect gravel or concrete pads, mature tree cover, and basic amenities. Fort Kaskaskia SHS has 32 electric sites plus primitive tent sites, with vault toilets, a hand-pump water source, and a dump station at the entrance, but no showerhouse. Randolph County SRA offers Class BE electric sites and Class C sites with full hookups including water and sewer, plus a dump station about a mile before the main campground entrance. Hawn State Park has basic and electric sites plus five walk-in tent sites, with showers, laundry, and a dump station available in season. Kaskaskia River Camping & RV Park offers full hookups and level, waterfront pads that can accommodate larger rigs. Cell service is variable at the state park campgrounds and reliable at the riverfront park.
