Outdoor activity centers on water and rock. Crab Orchard Lake supports fishing for crappie, bluegill, and bass, with public ramps and marina rentals for pontoons, paddle boats, and canoes at Blue Heron Marina and Campground. Rend Lake to the north adds beaches, birding, and paved bike paths. Inside Shawnee National Forest, visitors can hike Garden of the Gods, Little Grand Canyon, Bell Smith Springs, and Jackson Falls. The Tunnel Hill State Trail offers roughly 45 miles of crushed-limestone rail-trail suitable for bikes and e-bikes. Day trips from Royalton reach the Shawnee Hills Wine Trail, Giant City State Park, and Ferne Clyffe State Park. Herrin City Park adds a lighted walking path, tennis courts, a swimming pool, and a skate park for family stops between hikes and lake days.

Spring and fall are the most comfortable seasons for RV travel in southern Illinois. Spring brings wildflowers, waterfalls at full flow, and cool nights, but April is also the wettest month and low-lying areas along the Big Muddy River and Oakwood Bottoms can flood after heavy rain. Bugs and humidity ramp up quickly by late May. Summers are hot and muggy, with July highs averaging in the mid-80s Fahrenheit and frequent thunderstorms. Lakeside sites at Blue Heron Marina and Campground and around Rend Lake fill on holiday weekends, and forest campgrounds see steady weekend demand. Fall delivers milder days, drier weather, and peak color through mid to late October, and it aligns with deer, turkey, and waterfowl hunting seasons that draw crowds to public-land campgrounds. Winter is cold but rarely severe. Most Shawnee National Forest campgrounds close after mid-December and reopen April 1, while several private RV parks in the Herrin and Marion area stay open year-round.

Terrain around Royalton is rolling farmland transitioning to wooded hills and sandstone bluffs south and east of town. Roads to private parks are paved and easy for large motorhomes and travel trailers, while some forest access roads are gravel and narrow, so check rig-length limits before committing. Cell coverage is reliable in Herrin, Marion, and along I-57, but can drop inside Shawnee National Forest recreation areas. Grocery, fuel, propane, and RV supplies are easiest to find in Marion and Herrin. Expect ticks, chiggers, and mosquitoes from late spring through early fall, and plan for humidity. Wildlife sightings are common, including deer, wild turkey, bald eagles at Crab Orchard and Rend Lake in winter, and migrating waterfowl in spring and fall.
